YouTube is going LIVE

With over 2 billion views a day, it's easy to think about YouTube as a place to watch videos recorded in the past. But you’ve told us you want more - and that includes events taking place right now. In response, we’ve live streamed a number of popular concerts, sporting events, and interviews, but primarily on a one-off basis.

Today we're announcing the initial roll out of YouTube Live, which will integrate live streaming capabilities and discovery tools directly into the YouTube platform for the first time. This begins with a new YouTube Live browse page (www.youtube.com/live), where you can always find the most compelling live events happening on YouTube and add events to your calendar. Subscribe to your favorite YouTube live-streaming partners to be notified of upcoming live streams on your customized homepage.

Today, we'll also start gradually rolling out our live streaming beta platform, which will allow certain YouTube partners with accounts in good standing to stream live content on YouTube. The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead. In order to ensure a great live stream viewing experience, we'll roll this offering out incrementally over time. Partners interested in learning more about the livestream experience can check out today's post on the Partner Communications Hub.

So head over to www.youtube.com/live to check out some of the live streams taking place over the next few days. And don’t forget to tune in to the The DigiTour live stream tonight at 7pm PST. Log in to engage with live streamers and the rest of the YouTube community using our live comments feature. As always, let us know what you think of YouTube Live in the comments below.

Joshua Siegel, Product Manager, and Christopher Hamilton, Product Marketing Manager, plan to watch The Digitour live stream tonight at 7pm PST.

Interesting, what does this mean for other live streaming services like Justin.tv?

I am YouTube Partner [theshadowfan] in good standing and would like live streaming to be added to my channel as soon as possible. Thanks!

So how do I get reminded that a live YouTube event is about to happen? There should be a YouTubeLive Twitter account or automated tweets to those who flag a live event to see in future.

RicNunez said...

Way to go youtube!
Too bad you can't fix some of the small issues, like releasing usernames that hasn't been in use in years.

dvpweb said...

Ok so why can't I experience this on my ipad or mobile browser?
Any thought when will that happen?

Deen said...

It should be really interesting to see how that turns out. Wow.

We need transmit our classes in real time for our students.
How can we get the new system of You tube live?

Live streaming doesn't work.

John said...

Please open this up to anyone who wants to stream live. I've been waiting on this for years!

Elís said...

Would be so sweet if you could show the time on /live with the users local time instead of PST/BST/CST and what not.. Call me lazy, but as a European I don't want to have to google everytime I want to know what time 11pst is for me here in Norway! Could make it optional to please everyone =)

Cory said...

Will random users eventually be able to host live events? That'd be really awesome!

J said...

How can we become a live streamer ?
I Host an RC track that was broadcasting on Livestream and now on Ustream but functions are to limited and Youtube could be a great alternative.

Please contact us if this becomes possible.

I have been waiting for this! I began a 24/7 LifeCast on Stickam on 1/1/11 and I have had over 400,000 hits since then. My popularity on the LIVE circuit grows daily. I knew that the next level of tech would be LIVE and I am riding that wave. I beg that YOUTUBE contact me asap to help develop and test the mobile platform as I am already doing this now. Please YOUTUBELIVE reach out to me. I know where this is going and I am ALL in.

yowhasoy said...

will this feature ever be available to the public? Or is there a sign up for this to test?

Bernadette said...

This is really cool because if/when this capability becomes open to all users, we can have open government and gov2.0 inspired live feeds like those discussed in this article: http://www.resetsanfrancisco.org/petition/san-francisco-youtube-video-testimonials

As a Media Studies major, I really like all the innovations in technology that have the potential to give everyday citizens a greater voice, and I really think this is an example of that.

This sounds great. But unfortunately I will not be able to use it, because AT&T is capping my bandwidth as of next month to a paltry 150GB. I will need my ration for work, so using this new youtube service is not going to fit into my new limited internet.

Thanks AT&T, I love that you have a monopoly in my area!

Join the facebook AT&T bandwidth capping protest group here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_186439608067383

This all sounds very good, but as of May 1st, my online service provider, AT&T, is limiting my bandwith, so I will not be able to enjoy such things as this.

"Incrementally over time." :D

Can we volunteer to be an early candidate?

Can I please have a live channel soon :)
I do weekly live massage therapy shows (every Wednesday night) and I'll be live streaming at all the massage conferences this year, so people can see me interview massage vendors and massage instructors at the shows.
Thanks :)

Is this only for partners? We broadcast the recording of our podcast live every Tuesday on justin.tv we'd love to bring that over to YouTube. http://www.theexperience.fm

Very cool feature. "Partners with accounts in good standing"? I just took a look at my first live video and the video owner had made this comment:

"Don't worry about that wirecast shit, it will be going soon.

Ve3troGamesMedia"

Impressive.

When are we going to watch Tennis Grand Slams online in a decent quality in Europe? We wouldn't mind paying any kind of fee.. but why not just streaming it live?

I've been waiting for this feature for a long time. I resorted to UStream which was just because YouTube didn't offer yet, however now it will be a welcome addition. Don't take too long to roll it out.

JdashDUB said...

Since AT&T will be capping monthly bandwidth usage on May 1st for its Uverse as well as DSL customers, I will be unable to utilize this service. Thanks for taking us a step back in technology AT&T!

Things to add:
Live viewers count
Chat tailored to a live platform.

AntiMatter said...

I don't want videos from the past, nor the present, I want them from the future, do it!!!!

Love4MusicUK said...

A very welcome feature, but as a Partner can I still get the Live feature even though I have a strike on my account? This happened before I got partnered too :(

Maxi Milian said...

Omg yes!

You have no idea how much I've been looking forward to this. Please sign me up!

This is great news. We have video streaming service very good, as Justin or Ustream, we know. But neither has the background that YouTube has. I am very happy and I will wait patiently for when this service becomes available to everyone.

I posted this in my blog (in spanish)..... today is a great day for everybody.

Angie said...

That's great news youtube, wonderful, progressive idea-too bad I won't be watching much, well, me and anyone else who has AT&T-starting May 2nd, they are capping our dsl at 150GB and our uverse at 250GB per month.
So, I will have to choose carefully what I do and don't do.
If anyone else has AT&T-I suggest you visit our group page and learn more about these caps-THEY WILL AFFECT YOU:

Matt Roseboom said...

We'd love to stream live content, but not from our computer. Please make an iPhone app.

Ryan Hart said...

Please at live streaming to the Android app and add an API so we can use the YouTube live streaming in other apps.

Angie said...

Is this going to suck up as much bandwidth as netflix? cause I have at&t and they are starting usage caps on May 2nd, so I will have to cut down my viewing time, count every gig so to speak

Pisman said...

It's to bad that this only applies to Partners, which is impossible to get without Copyright Infringement.
I still need to switch between YouTube for normal streaming, and uStream for Live Stream.

Skettalee said...

Oh finally youtube... Catch up. Now when can I start broadcasting live too?

Jeremy NGL said...

I hope you'll stream NASA TV Live !!!

Mariovsky said...

what about adding this to google TV? is it planned?

Bawitdaba said...

Is there a reason Leo Laporte's TWiT (This Week In Tech) network was not accepted into this live streaming beta? They provide endless hours of amazing content every week, on occasion some of their videos get pulled down for copyright violations, but those are illegitimate complaints as it's fair use in a news broadcast. http://live.twit.tv

i think you should allow regular users like me (joestrange8) to do live streams!

YouTube is the KING when it comes to online video sharing. no dout about it!! and now...... they have a chance of becoming the KING of live streaming content!! finally YouTube is in the game of live stream content. who will win.. i say YouTube!!

René Bjørnskov said...

A small issue, the use of many different timezones on the live page makes it difficult to see when a live event takes place, a feature where you set a timezone in account settings, would solve this.
Alternatively the design of the live page could be improved to easily show when a live takes place.
Right now on the live page 6 different time zones are in use making the page rather confusing.
