TrueView Video Ads give viewers choice and control over ads

Advertising is what allows many of YouTube’s most creative video producers to keep producing their great material - it directly funds their creative process. And advertising is evolving. Increasingly, we’re seeing the distinction between advertisements and ‘regular videos’ blurring as advertisers start to make ads viewers want to watch.

We think that giving viewers a choice of which ads they want to watch means it’s even more likely that they’ll be engaged with the ad, and that advertisers will get their messages across to the right person. So YouTube has introduced a new kind of ad, known as TrueView Video Ads, which you’ll start seeing on the site today. It works like this: when you see an ad start to play, look for a 5-second countdown button that will allow you to “skip” it. If the ad doesn’t seem relevant or engaging to you, skip it and continue to the video you wanted to watch. Not every ad you see will have this “skip” option but we are working to bring you more choice and control in advertising where possible.

More compelling ads and viewer choice about which ads to watch (and whether to even watch an ad) means a more engaging, interactive, customized experience for both viewers and advertisers -- a true win-win for all.

If you’re an advertiser, please visit our InsideAdWords blog for more information on this announcement.

Not to be cynical, but people don't want to watch any ads. Therefore the data may not be completely accurate. All ads that are skipable will be skipped. =0

the only good thing about this is that we can skip it 5 seconds into the video. The real problem now is trying to skip the video from second 0.

The data you need to have is that no viewer wants to view ads, im already sick of having to click to shut that little pop up box in the video to start watching it peacefully.

No. Stop. Please. Videos ads before my video are not cool.

I agree with John. You can already see it in the videos that have video ads on that people have found sneaky ways to skip them. People just don't like watching video ads. They want to get straight to the video :)

I know I don't like video ads since they use up more broadband, and in a place like NZ which has capped internet usage, I'd rather not waste it on viewing an advert.

I don't agree with John. If the ad is targeted well there will be a bigger chance the video will be watched. And compared to a 12 second pre-roll you are normally forced to watch I think this is a good option.

I agree with john, when you see a skip button, people are going to skip no matter what..there goes my revenue.

This does mean for advertisers that there is a higher percentage that the money their spending will translate to actual sales and less impressions. Though, there will be less impressions.

i understand the need to advertise however on some computers the loading of the vidoe is a wait enough, perhaps they can put it in a link or keep the small adverstisment on the bottom of the video instead.

The temptation to press the 'skip' button will be all too great. The challenge for advertisers is to create ads that engage the viewer within the first 5 seconds.

"Advertising is what allows many of YouTube’s most creative video producers to keep producing their great material" Yet more evidence you don't have a single clue what your site is about. This is such an assinine comment and yet it is so telling about just how corporate YouTube has become. The most creative material has always come from ordinary people who take a video camera and shoot what comes to mind. It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with funding from advertising.

If we wanted to watch ads we would upload some and watch them. By the way, there are many brilliant ads uploaded on YouTube. But when we want music as background when we are working we don't want them interrupted by super-loud and often vulgar ads. Allowing us to make ad hoc playlists of all sorts is a great idea, don't spoil it by inserting loud and irrelevant ads at the start of every video. Of course you can skip them, but not before they've spoilt the atmosphere, and it forces us to interrupt whatever we are doing at every change of video to go and skip the ad - so what's the point of the playlist????
