Release Notes: Playlist Bar, music listings, annotations upgrades...
What's new on YouTube since we last met? Let us count the things...
"Playlist Bar" launch: Last week, we introduced the "Playlist Bar": when you view a playlist, recommended videos (from the homepage), your subscriptions or your favorites, you'll see a control bar at the bottom of the page, displaying the videos from those categories. The goal is to keep you from having to jumping back and forth to different pages to select which videos you'd like to watch next. Autoplay (which is no longer on by default) and the ability to select specific videos from your playlists without ever leaving the page are intended to make your viewing experience more seamless. We're continuing to monitor your feedback here as we plan improvements to this feature.
Local music listings: A new addition to our revamped music page is the "Events Near You" section, provided by Songkick. Discover an artist you like on the page? "Events Near You" will let you know if he or she is headed your way.
Annotations upgrades: We now offer fully transparent annotations with black or white text, a new default color (half-transparent black, replacing red), a new default position for new annotations (off-center), and a cleaner look for tooltips.
Redesigned video manager: The My_Videos page has been reworked to offer streamlined ways of managing and reviewing videos you've uploaded, including options to sort your videos alphabetically, by length, by recency and by views. You can also browse the content you've viewed, purchased and liked, and there's access right here to Insight and Promoted Videos information (to the right of "Edit" button). For feedback on these changes, please chime in here.
Promotional badges: Take a look at the badges created to help you better promote your YouTube channel on site and off. Find the asset you like and click on it to generate handy embed code for your blog or website (you'll have to sign in at the prompt).
New way to embed videos: A new embed code style enables you to view embedded videos in one of our Flash or HTML5 players, depending on your viewing environment and preferences. For more information, see this blog post from our API blog.
Buzz videos on your homepage: As with the Facebook feed import, the YouTube videos your friends are sharing on Google Buzz are now be pulled into your YouTube homepage if you're connected to Buzz (e.g. to AutoShare your activity).
HQ Webcam uploads: That's right: You can now upload high quality video from your Webcam! All webcam recordings will be done at 360p.
Free previews on rentals: All rental videos in the U.S. will show a free preview or movie trailer automatically so you can decide if you want to watch it before buying it. If you're over 18 and live in the U.S., you can check this out right here on the movie Kick-Ass.

Wow, amazing round of updates. Congratulations!
The Playlist Bar just feels like really bad design. What was wrong with the previous way playlists were displayed? I LIKED being able to see the titles of queued videos without having to mouse over them! The Playlist Bar really feels tacky and meant to look nice (which it doesn't) instead of useful. It also doesn't fit with the design of the site at all (a design that YouTube put a lot of effort into giving a major overhaul not that long ago). It honestly doesn't add any functionality that wasn't available before.
"The goal is to keep you from having to jumping back and forth to different pages to select which videos you'd like to watch next." -- Last I checked, you were able to do this with the previous design.
It feels like you're dumbing down the interface in an attempt to draw in new/novice users. The problem is that they're not the ones who would be using these features. Regular users who spend a lot of time on YouTube are the ones who benefit the most from these tools (well, not this one, but the previous version). Only after novice users spend a lot of time on the site will they feel the need for using these types of tools, and the previous playlist box wasn't hard to figure out.
You don't need to make every single feature "seamless" and AJAXy. Sometimes, there are benefits to having things on different pages. It provides clearly-defined areas for performing specific tasks. It's FAR better to have a page with great features and a great interface than it is to shove everything on one page and make a mess. If people want to find another video to watch, they're either going to choose from the Suggested Videos list or do a search. Those of us who want to manage our position in a playlist want something that's FUNCTIONAL and stays out of the way (which was what you had before this awful Playlist Bar).
I love the HQ webcam uploads!
At least Autoplay isn't on anymore.
Youtube, Please remove the Playlist bar. If you really looked at our feedback you'd know everyone hates it. Please please please stop making these changes. No one like the new channel page, video page, and now this? Why don't you ask us what we would like to see changed instead of changing it then simply ignoring us when we have something to say as it seems you already have.
Please remove playlist bar.
people should not have to install
an extension or user script.
it is horrible an annoying as all hell!
I'm sorry, but I absolutely HATE the new Playlist bar, to the point where I've downloaded a Userscript extension to hide it completely. PLEASE make a way to turn it on or of in our preferences.
thx man
Awesome!
shit sucks. remove it.
When are you gonna remove that piece of shit bar that everyone hates of the bottom of when you view a subscription video? at least ad the option to enable/disable that shit, not just throw us with stupid ideas at your fucking company without the ability to enable/disable.
The playlist bar is interesting, but personally I find it annoying when I'm trying to see what's behind it. Do you think you could provide an account option to turn it off? Maybe in favor of the previous playlist sidebar? I really liked that.
GET RID OF THE FUCKING PLAYLIST BAR ITS MORE OF A PAIN THEN HELPFUL, OR JUST MAKE SOMETHING SO WE MAY DISABLE IT, THERE R TONS OF VIDEOS TALKING ABOUT HOW ANNOYING IT IS. STOP ADDING CRAP THATS NOT NECESSARY.
The playlist bar is annoying as hell. I am glad that autoplay is now off by default, but the bar still jumps up and down when a new video is loaded, and when scrolling through a loaded video. If this damn thing is going to be imposed upon the users (like with everything else that has been done to YouTube), then how about at least making it so the full title, or more of the title of a video is displayed in the bar? A lot of videos are uploaded in parts due to the now 15 minute upload limit, and video numbers (Video 1/3) are typically at the end of a title. These are not visible in the playlist bar. Getting rid of it's ability to open when it wants to would be nice too. However, the ultimate thing that could be done with this would be a way to disable it entirely.
Cool YouTube, now how do I turn off that bar? It's annoying and obtrusive, even after autoplay was disabled by default.
i just hate this new bar..... it sucks....
I don't know if any of the devs are reading this, but I have a few of questions:
1. Is there any way to disable the Playlist Bar? I know I can turn the Auto-Play list off, but I just don't want that thing popping up all the time.
2. Is there any way we can decide what is in the Music Listings recommended for us? For example, in every category of Music, Justin Bieber is listed (even in Electronic, and I don't know how that works). I don't want to listen to him. I know that he is popular right now, but I don't care to listen to his music, or a lot of the music similar to his.
3. For a month now, whenever I go to my channel, all video information is not there; no view count, video description, tags, etc. When I go to that video's own page, then it is all present. Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks in advance, and I have enjoyed some of the changes and improvements in your service. Keep doing a good job.
For the love of Vegeta's pink shirt please kill the playlist bar A.K.A. the grey bar
As far as the redesign to "my videos" section, I like the new ability to sort
And thanks for the new annotations upgrades
But seriously kill the greybar
How can I completely turn off the playlist bar? I do not wish to use this feature.
I found those awesome badges on the creators corner a while ago. they rock.

Why is YouTube getting worse and worse?
Seriously.
I think the general consensus is that people do not like th Grey Subscription bar. I know I don't like it. It does not allow me to pick what subscribed videos I want to watch smoothly. It also just seems so alien to the YouTube Brand.
I did put up a suggestion video on how a possible subscription page that would work well.
VIDEO HERE
Keep on YouTubin!
Off buttons, they exist, use them. More specifically, use them on your playlist "upgrade". It's not that hard to include a toggle allowing the user to keep this little pain in the ass from popping up.
the videos we have being seen in youtube is amazing movies and high quality videos....
No more bottom bar. I like the old one in the side of the video.
some suggestions to the developers:
1. now the playlist bar closes whenever we switch to a new video from the playlist...so we have to open it again and again to be able to see the playlist, which is quite a hassle (all those mouse-clicks, which eventually hurt the fingers after a while) ...so what about keeping it closed as default (as it is now) and opening it on mouse-over ...so this way it wouldn't interfere with reading the video comments, still we could have the playlist displayed whenever we want, with a simple move.
2. once a playlist-video has been played, there's no way to go back to a previous video, like videos at the beginning of the playlist (i guess it's just a bug)...some kind of page-turning solution would be much appreciated here, something like that list above the currently played video where you can browse the uploader's videos...here again the best would be if we could turn the page by simply hovering the mouse over the (page-turning) arrows.
3. and also having the titles of the videos somewhere near the playlist-video thumbnails would be a good thing
otherwise i think the playlist bar is a good idea, just needs some simple improvements ;)
and of course i meant: opening the playlist bar on mouse over, and closing it when we hover the mouse away from it
I wouldn't mind if the playlist bar was on the side because very few if any computers are square. The usually have more space on the sides
Dear Youtube :
Not trying to be mean youtube, but your losing a lot of money, people are leaving the site because they hate the youtube channels, video page, etc.
I would suggest you change it back to the old format, if you do, users will stop complaining about the new youtube, and you will be making much much more money, I'll list the things you need to fix...
1. Give us a choice between the new o
r old channels
2. Remove the playlist bar at the bottom of the screen.
3. Give us the old my videos page.
4. Change back to the old video page.
You worthless bastards...
Another bad move, YouTube. Everything you do makes my video viewing experience crap.
almost all of the listed music videos are not available im my country... is it possible to view only the available music videos?! it's so annoying :(
Thanks for sharring importent information in this blog.
It was very nice.

Bug report:
The "Sort By" feature in the redesigned My Videos area of YouTube does not work.
Video: My Videos "sort by" bug
When you select "Most Viewed" from the sort by options, the page refreshes, but the videos are still ordered by date.

I don't mind the new playlist bar, but when I click on a video that I know is in a playlist, the playlist bar doesn't show up at the bottom. It only shows up if you click to watch the playlist itself. Is there anyway to make it so that when someone clicks to watch a video that's part of a playlist, they're made aware that it's part of a playlist? Using a "series" instead of a standard playlist used to accomplish that, but it seems like series playlists no longer exist (I'm a partner channel)?
Please remove the playlist bar. It's an abomination. Listen to your critics.
well i really like the playlist bar.. and somehow my baby accidently removed my bar. can you please put it back on for me.. please... or send me a message on how i can get it back. thanks youtube.
The contsant changes are making me ill. STOP!!
Please remove the playlist bar. It's really hard to use and I admit, there is some people who doesn't want to use it. It's no use.
Hey guys
Would like to know how is possible to make video annotations to an external URL.
I have couple of clients in Australia that would love to use that feature.
This is an example of what Im talking about
http://www.youtube.com/frenchconnection
Thanks
The playlist bar is absolutely useless for me. If some people want to use it, that's fine. But can you guys at least give us the option to remove it? For crying out loud, it's been months already. Admit the design is unhelpful, fix it, so we can move on. The bar is extremely irritating for people with smaller computer screens.
Take the playlist bar please! It is usless. ,and it is covering some things, plz!
In the "new channel design" of YouTube, you encounter with "playlist bar" mostly ONLY when you click on for example "23 videos" on top of the video you are watching and then on "see all videos",..to avoid playlist bar ,if you want to see all 23 videos, just click on the "username" of the uploader (under the video), then you see uploader's channel, click on "videos" on left top corner of the channel...then you will see all 23 videos and you click on any of them, you watch it with all comments etc. , without any disturbing "playlist bar"
navigating on the playlists-bar is no pleasure.
please please please develop something better or more customizable!
