Strike you’re out! Or maybe not?
Imagine you’ve spent hours editing and shooting your latest YouTube video, when only a few days after its debut on the site, the video comes down and you’ve received -- what? -- a strike for a violation of our Community Guidelines? Is this baseball?!
With over 24 hours of content uploaded to YouTube every minute, it’s impossible for us to pre-screen content. That’s why we count on our community members to know the Community Guidelines and flag content that violates the rules. We review all flagged content and if we find a video does violate the guidelines, the video comes down and in most instances, the uploader receives a strike in their account.
As you can imagine, with the massive volume of videos on our site, sometimes we make the wrong call. Last week we launched a more accessible appeals process, designed to make it easier for you to contest a takedown and a strike against your account for a Community Guidelines violation. So, if you think your video was removed mistakenly, you can appeal the strike within your own account. Here’s how:
When you sign into your account, you’ll need to acknowledge your Community Guidelines strike. After that, you can sign into My Account Settings and appeal your video strike directly from the "Manage Account" section under "Account Status". After we review your appeal, if we find that your video did not violate our Community Guidelines after all, we will reinstate it and remove the strike from your account. We’ll also send you an email letting you know the result of your appeal request.
Ultimately, YouTube is a platform for free expression, so we want to ensure that as much content is allowed to remain on the site as possible. Just like in baseball, we need a few rules to keep the game moving along, although now with YouTube, you have the option to talk to the umpire.
To learn more about the strike appeals process, check out this page in our Help Center. Note that this new process only applies to strikes for violations of our Community Guidelines. More information about copyright strikes may be found here.

Too little too late. LOL
Ugh now if only it was this easy for copyright strikes. Especially ones that are false. *Sigh*
Sweet! i love how they are doing this!
've heard a lot of people complain about this area. I've never experienced a strike but, I am very aware of just how many nasty jealous people are on Youtube who just get pleasure out of causing trouble for others. I elect to approve any comments on my channel and I often get cantankerous nit pickers and vile foul mouthed louts looking to argue. I just delete and block 'em. Some people spend months creating videos and, depend on Youtube for their living. I'm glad Youtube is seeing sense and addressing this issue.
I'd also like to request that when you send out a 'friend' request, that Youtube send you a notification when they have accepted. Just an idea that'd be good!

YES. FIRST POST.
AND YES TO THE COPYRIGHT THING.
What if the strike you have on your account is older? Will those be able to be appealed also? Because I have an account that is several years old and was banned and I believe that the strikes against it were unfair.
Thanks youtube.
love it
We need a way to contest Privacy Complaints. People are abusing this tool as a form of censorship
What is your policy on explosions? for some reason they get flagged down, although they do not break any of the Community Guidelines you still take them down, and when I tried appealing I got banned for 3 months because it was turned down.
BUT IT NEVER BROKE ANY RULES.
You claim you watch each flagged video before any action is taken, but I see clearly now that it is a complete lie.
if it was true, then most videos would never be taken down, because the youtube operator would realize that it was not breaking any rules. But apparently if I get a band of 5 friends and we all flag a video at the same time, your bot will take it down. Fail.
i definitely do like the analogy between YouTube & Baseball. YouTube is always going to be the number one way to broadcast and share to the world, KEEP UP WITH THE GREAT CHANGES !! although this doesn't apply to me, I am glad it can help others, good stuff!!!
I wish there was a way to resotre suspended accounts, or at least give a second chance to those who were prema suspended. There might e couple of youtubers out there who were unwrongful banned for good. Oh well, at least something being done about false flags and DMCAs.
Does this work with DMCA notices as well?
What happens if you get a strike from an account that uses the same E-Mail? Can that be removed from your account and just stay on the other one?
A good new feature; better late than never.
My video was removed without me being given a strike, so how do I appeal that? I know it was mass flagged by a group of people that don't like me and there is nothing wrong with it but without the strike how do I appeal?
My account was suspended and i don't know why. I never had any warnings and only had two videos on there that i downloaded. They were business vids of a presentation we were giving to our members. what could be wrong with that???
My business vid was connected to my Facebook pages and now they are down.
I have Found Something new with you tube
Took you long enough.. someone is flagging LP'er videos and getting everyone suspended. NintendoCapriSun's channel is completely gone now thanks to you do nothing sons of bitches. First it happened to T2Darlantan, and now the lp'ers.. I'm so tempted to just move on to blip.tv and let this site continue going to hell
If all videos were reviewed prior to possible deletion, we wouldn't have a random user go around and false flagging people's videos, getting those users' accounts suspended.
It's even worse because this guy apparently knows how to do it without getting caught, especially since it's said that he openly admits to doing it to demonstrate that the YouTube moderators do absolutely nothing when they receive a claim.
Is anything being done about the false DMCA claims?
why doesn't WMG and all copyright companies just fuck off? it's a major pain in the ass when your videos are copyrighted. and it's also stupid too.
my name is john locke an would like to get reinstated......3 years .. 3 strikes .. 80 lost videos very NICE videos CRAP LIVES ON .. on you tube..........had many happy years before G O O G L E
I had 2 videos disabled, appealed them and all it says it appeal rejected. I have gone over the C.G.'s many times and there was no content in there for them to be disabled. Another user has been false flagging my videos. Why doesn't YT even tell you the exact violation/reason why the appeal was rejected?
Fair Use. Use it, or lose it.
Google Books -- oh, the irony.
...also.
I had two strikes that were movie clips of literally of less than 20 seconds! I am a professor and used these in class. This is simply a straightforward case of Fair Use.
Suggestion if anyone at YouTube is listening:
I had many videos of my own that I can no longer access because my account was terminated. This seems unfair. Terminate the ability to upload new content if you must, but not the ability to access one's own videos.
Or, give use the ability to transfer these videos to a new YouTube acct.
This seems especially needed since apparently Google only defends it's own Fair Use rights, not those of its Youtube users.

Youtube is cracking down now, don't post any video with any media content made outside your own home. They will shut you down. Good reason anyways, Youtube is a hellhole sucking the blackness of the universe into it.
well how about having virtually your entire 300+ music video channel (including 3 of your very own 100% original tunes) get flagged, not for copyright infringement, but because of "inappropriate content" when virtually every song is an INSTRUMENTAL as well as upbeat at that?!!!
i'm positive that i was targeted by some rapper, head banger or republican who only know anger, bitterness & bullying.
youtube really needs to start monitoring FLAG ACTIVITY to target the true scurge of the site & free speech, flag abusers. all it takes is to look at a few videos that someone who's flagged 100 in a day to see if the deserve it.
i'm steaming mad that youtube is kowtowing to scumbag bullies who attack with impunity at the expense of those trying to bring a glimmer of positivity to the world. i don't think ANY video that doesn't contain illegal content or porn etc. should be immune from flagging. just as with big media, youtube is attacking free speech which is slowly turning into an american myth.
WMG fascists are another issue, but instrumentals can NEVER violate community guidelines. songs with lyrics? sure, but not instrumentals.
You guys just clearly nuke things you disagree with. You just nuked a video that a woman had posted -- with PLENTY OF GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNINGS -- in which she shared her feelings after seeing her aborted baby, and showed her baby to illustrate WHY she was so distressed.
Your own policy says "For instance, including a clip from a slaughter house in a video on factory farming may be appropriate. However, stringing together unrelated and gruesome clips of animals being slaughtered in a video may be considered gratuitous if its purpose is to shock rather than illustrate."
This woman's still photos of her baby were in the context of why she was so distressed after her abortion. They were there not for gratuitous shock value, but to ILLUSTRATE.
This is the second example in a single day of YouTube singling out videos for censorship, ostensibly based on "violations", but clearly for censorship purposes.
I'm very upset at this whole process...or rather should I say the lack there of. I had an account for many years and never posted a video. Finally I posted three within the last few months. Today I found out my account was in violation, but rather than taking down the one out of three videos they froze my account. When I went to get more info they decided to terminate my account. WHAT!?! I didn't even know I was violating anything with my video but I've never had a flag before so why go to the extreme of taking down the whole account. I'm confused and frustrated. It seems a little unjust.
My YouTube account was just suspended without warning or reason. Now, how can I appeal and reason with YouTube when they will not even tell me what is wrong in the first place? It doesn't make any sense unless it was just automated. How can I know how to improve on YouTube, in life if people don't even let you know what is wrong. I am talking about people, not computer programs. Please help?
I just noticed that one of my videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIwmguC4OWo was Rejected "content inappropriate". I never received any notice and my account status says:
Account Status: Community Guidelines
Your account is in good standing.
Account Status: Copyright
Your account is in good standing.
So, I have no means to appeal the decision! Can someone let me know what was wrong with the video? It was up since 2008 and had 5000+ views before it was rejected.
I think we all need a way to classify our videos and keep them away from children. (Please, don't act like de MPAA when you're rating the videos!)
I just wanna say that the content of my channel is not for children and it's suppossed that there is an agreement between me and my target: We all are adults, we all love art cinema (and sometimes there is a tit or an ass in those movies...) I don't wanna blow the children's mind or condemn their souls forever....)
It's just unfair to have a notification or any kind of surveillance from YT 'authorities', don't you think?
Greeting from Mexico, land of Tequila and magic mushrooms!
How would YOUTUBE understand when a video uses ASL (American Sign Language)? They used assumption instead. One of my good friends got an email from The YouTube Community has flagged one or more of your videos as inappropriate. Once a video is flagged, it is reviewed by the YouTube Team against our Community Guidelines. Upon review, we have determined that the following video(s) contain content in violation of these guidelines, and have been disabled. So this email will not let to reply back. That is absurd. Someone from YouTube can contact and find out why an appeal is needed. Someone with lowlifes and guilty traps who hit flags are laughing. You guys made a bad judgement on decision. U need to do a BETTER job and carefully investigate. Thanks for your prompt attention !
