Connecting a Google Account to your older YouTube account
Following YouTube’s acquisition by Google in 2006, new YouTube signups were given the choice between two different account systems to power their YouTube experience: the original YouTube account system (built in 2005) or the Google Account system.
In May 2009, we started requiring all new YouTube usernames to be powered by Google Accounts.
Now, we’re gradually asking all remaining pre-May 2009 users still using the older YouTube account system to connect a Google Account to their YouTube username. For now, it’s an optional step, but eventually it’ll be required in order to continue using your YouTube username.
Before we go any further, we should clarify three important facts:
- YouTube usernames themselves aren’t going anywhere. No matter when you signed up for YouTube, or if you’re currently associated with a Google Account, you’ll still be “LifeOfTheParty29” (aka “your username”) on YouTube.
- A Google Account is not necessarily a Gmail account. You can create a Google Account with any email address through many different Google products, just like you can create a Twitter or Facebook account with any email address. Of course, you can choose to use Gmail as the email address for your Google Account.
- Connecting your existing YouTube username to an existing Google Account doesn’t start sharing your YouTube activity to your Buzz followers; it’s only an account connection behind the scenes, and it’s still up to you to decide whether or not to bring YouTube into the rest of your Google life.
- Improved account security. The Google Account system is robust and will help reduce spam across the site; users will get a slew of security and safety features that Google has spent the past decade developing.
- A single account system. This may not mean much to anyone outside of the YouTube engineering team, but behind the scenes it’s extremely complicated to support two different account systems. Having all users on the same account system not only simplifies matters, but more important, it makes it much easier to use Google technologies to keep the site running smoothly (over two billion views a day and counting), as well as introduce new functionality.

I'd like to unlink my YouTube and Google Account, so I can link YouTube to my new Google Account......
One question,
I had an old youtube account that I deleted and disconnected from my gmail account. Then I had another one I wanted to connect, lets say "youtube@site.com" for some reason it will not connect to my current google account, ideas?
Let me unlink my YouTube from my old google account and have it tied to my new one. Maybe if Google Accounts weren't so restrictive more people would link them. But right now they suck. My YouTube, cjschrissouth, is linked to a 5 year old google account that i never use. And someone who hasn't logged in since 2005 has my desired username, which I can't change. In other words, you suck

I have multiply YouTube and gmail accounts. I use one gmail account more and another YouTube account more. Why do you force me to keep signing in and out to manage my stuff?
"Improved" account security? Peh. If someone gets your Google password that means they also have full access to your YouTube account, AND if you don't know your Google password you cannot access your YouTube account unless you go through this complicated sequence, hence why I am keeping my account unlinked from my Google account. You can't force me to. :]
Oh, and my comments are being moderated? Sure, go ahead, abide the constitution's first amendment and maybe a few federal laws related to it as well by limiting my freedom to express my opinion. (Last I checked, you are _not_ supposed to break federal laws regardless.)

FeierYeti - you can unlink if you created your YouTube and Google Accounts at separate times - just go to youtube.com/my_account_unlink.
Caniac - not sure I understand - you have a new YouTube account now that you want to connect to your Gmail account? Confused since YouTube account names aren't "youtube@site.com" - they're just usernames.
What If You Have More Than One Account On Each E-Mail Address?
a Google Account of mine refused to connect my YouTube account. causing the old Google Account is "violate" term of service of YouTube 3 years ago. Accounting to YouTube's nowadays' term of service, it is not a really violation. So I have to keep my YouTube account unlinked.
Wow, the entire Youtube site is down right now - usually during maintenance you limit features.

Brian - Well, that's the problem, I DID create my Youtube Account with my rocketmail-email and the Google Account at the same time, because I did not use Google back there that much.... but now I have a new googlemail-email and an Google Account with this adress, and I want to delete my rocketmail-email.... so I'm trapped in a devil's circle, and Google just don't care :(

I cannot link my Google account to my you-tube, when i link them it says they linked successfully, but then I try to put moderator on my channel and it says I must link my Google account, even though i just did. And when I try to sign in with my Google account it says "This account has been permanently disabled! What am I to do??
Does this mean that the YouTube API will finally recognize our Google accounts?
Because my "elder" YouTube account still demands I enter in my YouTube credentials, even after hooking it up to a Google account. :-(
wow this is completely pointless. optional is one thing but requirements? what happens if you forget the gmail password and question answers?

I get this, I think Flickr and Delicious require a Yahoo! ID, so do Microsoft for SkyDrive, but I would like an option to change linked Google-YouTube accounts before making it permanent.
Google or youtube. who every you are. i know it for security reason. but tell you the truth. people like freedom more than any thing in this world. if they cant have what they want. they be unhappy. i been unhappy with Gmail when i got it. i cant get update on post or comment asap. with my yahoo mail. it show up as soon they post. do us a faver and but it back the way it was.
This is a real pain if you admin multiple accounts. What Google really needs is the ability to log into multiple accounts at once.

I had this rocketmail-adress from Yahoo, and then I wanted to register at Youtube, they asked me for an email/google account, so I used rocketmail, thinking "well, you can change it any time"
Now I have a googlemail-adress, which I use for about everything, and I want to delete the rocketmail-adress and link my new googlemail-adress and Google Account for the Youtube Account...but this is obviously impossible (says google)....
So I'm stuck with this stupid rocketmail-google-account 'til the end of my life, just becaus google is to lame to even have a support...
So, what should I do with this problem (creating a new Youtube-Account is not an option) ???

That's great but I have 2 BIG ISSUES WITH GOOGLE & YOUTUBE.
#1 When a YouTube account is tied to a Gmail address, it CANNOT be changed to a different email address which is VERY FRUSTRATING. Google needs to change this. I don't understand why they can't.
#2 When a YouTube account has been deleted the username can NEVER BE REGISTERED AGAIN? Why? It' s so stupid. If an account no longer exist the username should be available to register. Again I don't understand why this is complicated to solve.
You know, there are some bugs with the YouTube/Google account system that really should be sorted out before I even think about switching over.
My biggest problem: When I sign out of YouTube on an account that already has a link to Google, it automatically signs me out of Gmail.
What's worse is that it will sometimes automatically log me into the Gmail of my linked Google account when I log into YouTube.
I have two seperate services here: Gmail and YouTube. Just like how I wouldn't want Skype to sign off when I close Steam or something, I don't see why I should be forced to constantly be logging back into my Gmail, just so you guys can save money on a new login system.
If that one issue were to be fixed, then I'd still have 1 more issue that bothers me:
A friend of mine was suspended off of YouTube due to copyright infringement. The email designated for his account was his main Gmail account. When he got suspended off of YouTube, his Gmail (and whole Google account) was suspended as well.
Now, he can't get to his email, where he can find the information needed to counterclaim the YouTube strike (He has no copyright infringing videos... only parodies. He has the right to counterclaim, but not the information needed to counter it, such as the specific video that caused the suspension).
My hopes are that these issues will be solved before the mandatory takeover, but my hopes aren't too high, as I've been with Google/YouTube through the mandatory Beta channel takeover.
um id like to link my google account to one of my old usernames on youtube but its locked... any chance of getting that username unlocked or erased so i can use the name again ?

I linked my google account to my YT account by accident, and at first it was fine, but I logged into today and I lost over more than half of my subscriptions. Its says I have 5, but when I tried to check all my subs, it said I had 25, but I couldn't even view most of them. Is there a bug going around?

Everytime, when I sign in to Youtube, I was prompted to link my youtube account to my google account.

3 BIGGEST ISSUES WITH GOOGLE & YOUTUBE
#1 Users should be able to manage multiple YouTube channels under 1 single Google Account. Just like Blogger & Tumblr. Why is it so difficult?
#2 Users should be able to change the Google account to which their YouTube channels are attached regardless of whether that account is a G-mail address or not.
#3 YouTube accounts which have been deleted should have their usernames available to register after a determined period of time. They should do the same for G-mail accounts too.
We love Google and we love YouTube but we think you guys can make it BETTER. MUCH.

Alright, so I have a question. Does this mean that all pre May 2009 accounts will be purged? Does that mean that those who haven't logged into their accounts for years, or simply refuse to switch over to the Google system, while still being on the older Youtube account system, will have their accounts disabled, or won't be able to log in anymore? Please respond, you were very shady on that part and did not clarify.

Unfortunalty, I can now only log in to YouTube using my google account (i.e. full e-mail address + password) YouTube will not let me sing in using my Usename and password (either the orginal youtube password or the google account password)
This means I cannot upload video from my iphone. This is a google/youtube problem not an issue with my phone as there is exactly the same problem if I try to log in with my username from a PC.
I have checked all the forums and there seems to be no solution (which works)

Ok seriously. This is an amazing security hole. Youtube is a trivial service compared to my email, I don't want to be entering in my email password every time I want to use youtube a little. Logging into youtube shouldn't log me in to *everything*, that's just asking for my email to be compromised.
Also it really pisses me off because my email password is much more complex than my youtube password (or what my youtube password was).

Tried to do the linkup, as this evening I found that I could no longer use youtube for even looking up vids while logged in without the link. Each time I tried to link, firefox would then state that the redirect could NOT be completed properly and I could no longer access youtube AT ALL until I used the link to unlink the accounts, which then started it up all over again with me needing to link up.
In a word, fix your crap before demanding that your users jump through hoops to use your service.

Can't sign into my old Youtube account, I tried linking it but it said that it was already linked to another Google account. So confused :S. I need two because one is for class, the other for personal use.
You utter bollocks! Why in hell can´t you leave it at optional? This is just plain dictatorship, Mubarak wasn´t half as bad as the new youtube.
First, it was the constant flood of ads spoiling everything (talk about reducing spam by this new thing btw: LOOSE THE ADS! IT IS THE WORLD BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ASS!)
Second came the unavailability of hundreths of thousand videos (e.g. with background music from Warner etc.) and the blocking of videos for my country, Germany.
For christs sake, I couldn´t even watch a 1998 Rammstein video. "Sorry but this video isn´t available in your country!" Rammstein is german, so why am I not allowed to watch their videos, but some bloke in Kazakhstan is???

It's a pain to begin with to be locked out of viewing anything when signed in until I verify and link my account. But then getting a Google account means I have to give them my number and text me?
Um. No. It's not that I believe Google has malicious intentions for it and really won't throw it to the spammers. However, I'm not in the habit of giving my number to ANY site, be it trustworthy like Google or shady like Site of Totally Legit Free Offers, and as far as I recall, Youtube never required it before; if it did, I wouldn't have signed up to begin with. Shockingly enough, some people don't use their phones for everything under the sun, and I'm not going to bother with texting because there was no need to ever learn it for Youtube in the first place.

I deleted my youtube account. I ONLY HAVE A GMAIL BECAUSE I HAD TO IN ORDER TO USE THE CALENDER!?!? ON MY MOBILE PHONE AND LINK IT TO EVERY CONTACT!?!. Now I have an email account that I never use but it requires maintenance...I now have to sacrifice time to it... Now this. Clearly No one, and i mean NO ONE wanted any of these things connected. My problem is I decided just to put up with it and connected the youtube account to the google account. then when my Hotmail account got compromised i started to switch things over to a gmail email. problem is it Won't let me Switch the primary email for the Youtube account to a gmail account for some reason.
Like What am i missing? last i checked gmail was part of google right? so why can't my youtube account primary email Be a gmail address?
