The success of the film An Inconvenient Truth had several outcomes: it moved the issue of climate change into the spotlight and forced average citizens to think about their consumption; it catapulted former U.S. Vice President Al Gore into the role of global climate champion; and it demonstrated that film has the power to promote social change.
In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, we're building upon these results by partnering with Vice President Al Gore and his organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection, on our next round of Video Volunteers.
This month, as Video Volunteers curator, Gore is asking you to use film to do good by creating a short, inspiring video for your favorite climate change organization. The top three videos will appear on the YouTube homepage alongside a video from Gore himself as part of a very special Earth Day spotlight. Here he is with more details about the program and why it's imperative that you take action:
Earth Day is on April 22, so we're working with an abridged Video Volunteers timeline this month. All entries must be submitted by April 19 to be considered, so get your camera out today. And if you're a nonprofit organization working on issues related to climate change, this could be your chance to make a big impact on the YouTube homepage. Except you realize Al Gore read the charts wrong, and the temperature to carbon rate was actually in reverse; carbon levels would rise AFTER temperature shifts.
Incidentally, the ocean, which makes up more than 60% of the planet, gives off way more carbon than man kind could ever produce on its own.

Earth Day is a great thing, being more aware of nature is something everyone can benefit from. However, Al Gore and global warming/climate change is a different matter. Gore is at best an opportunistic alarmist, at worst a flat out liar. Read the actual papers and you'll see that the real scientist state they don't have good historical data nor are the clear on the level of impact man has vs natural changes like solar activity.
Man's impact on the environment - something to be aware of? Yes. Something to improve? Yes. Something to freak out about and spend billions on? NO!
To continue to "honor" this hack is beyond me. I have an idea. Focus on his carbon footprint for a year. I'm sure it will match a small American city. Huge home(s), vehicles - saw him climbing into a big SUV, and plane trips around the globe. The hypocrisy is mind staggering.

I mean, saving the Polar Bear and at the same time turning America into a 3rd World Nation economically which will in fact cause more pollution isn't actually the answer.

Liberals simply don't know how to look beyond the "obvious" of things to see what the actual facts and consequences are, as well as what the actual solutions should be. America is built on conservative values, it has exalted and lifted man more so than any other system on the planet. All the other country's do socialism, do communism, fascism, etc., and they all suck compared to us in nearly all aspects. However, the country's that are closer to us in values and economics all have a higher standard of living. Who cares about the earth when the design of one of the most important websites sucks?
Seriously, you have to admit that:
- many features and functions disappeared (because only 100,000 of several million users use it? that's ignorant and arrogant)
- many functions are now more clicks away than before (to make the design more simple. it's not simplicitiy to hide everything, it's just crappy UI design.)
- the new features are mostly useless, like the comment summary (best rated comment ist just any non-spam comment, comment from channel owner is usually a response to another comment)
The comments were bad and buggy before, but now it's even worse. the "@username" thing in replies doesn't point to the comment being replied to, so all structure is gone. the comment's rating and time are mostly hidden. why? I wanted to see that information!
A relatively small problem (but a problem you had to think about before you decided the change, which you clearly did not) is the lack of continuity, since now all videos saying something about the yellow button and the sidebar are wrong.
Why oh why didn't you just add options to let the user choose?
There are nearly no settings for users to adjust the way they want to experience youtube. Of course there are some who like it more simple, but many (as can be seen in nearly all comments here and on youtube) don't want to miss the options they had before. So why not give the users a bunch of settings like "do you want to see timestamps under each comment? yes/no", "do you want to see comment's ratings? always/never/only if rated at least X"
of course, storing such settings is an overhead, but relatively small compared to 25 hours of video per minute...
and if you add settings, then no, the most important thing is not what background color the side has and if the page shows the current weather in my location. i know you thought that would be a good next step. it is not.

Climate change might be real, but I don't think you should be giving Al Gore too much credit - he's only muddled this issue with his focus on CO2. There are plenty of other factors we can look at that show things aren't going well, but CO2 levels are only correlated with, not necessarily responsible for global warming.
Dunno where else to post this, but for the love of God, please bring back the 5 star rating system! There's no way to discern whether something is good or bad before clicking on it. Consequently, I've accidentally watched a whole array of s••tty adverts...

when i click on any video link in youtube, only the area which shows the player and video is shown, i can't see anything else; the page is all blank except the player, which then goes to the left-up side of the page; it starts, but i can't see anything else,
no rate, no comment; ...
what is wrong?
chrome and IE show the new youtube theme correctly; but firefox suddenly disappears everything and only shows the player;

I could care less about this or the new youtube layout. But can you PLEASE do something about unlink Google accounts with Youtube? It messes up my iGoogle and gmail. I can't even manage a company youtube account without link MY PERSONAL account to it.

Metacafe, Viddler, ustream, blip.tv, all alternatives to this site. We should start talking about alternative sites to youtube now since it seems they won't listen to any input which has been almost entirely negative on the changes. This isn't like the channel page update where I could see SOME use to it. This is horrendous on a grand level. I tried thinking of something good to say for the longest time and I come up blank. It's been dumbed down and made less intuitive. It's a combination of terms I did not think was possible to have in the same sentence so congratulations on screwing up youtube so bad that I'm now minimizing my usage and going to alternative sites.
I'd recommend Videosurf to search for videos from now on. I just found it using google and it searches most every video site so you can view anything you like really.

If you bothered to do some proper research, you would see that CO2 is only 3.6% of GHG in the atmosphere. Of that 3.6%, man made contributions are only 3.2%. A grand total of .12% of ALL GHG is attributable to man. Water vapor makes up 95% of GHG. Accept Occam's razor: Is it more likely that our .12% GHG is more powerful then the rest of the 99.88% of the leftover NATURAL GHG?
