Warner Music Comes Back to YouTube

Music Licensing: It's complicated. Let's face it. But today all of that is beside the point: we are happy to announce that Warner Music Group (WMG)'s artists are returning home to YouTube. Under this new, multi-year global agreement, you will be able to discover, watch and share Warner music on the site. The partnership covers the full Warner catalog and includes user-generated content containing WMG acts.

With Warner on board, we now have artists from all four of the major music labels & publishers together with hundreds of indie labels and publishers on our platform. Warner will also be able to sell their own ad inventory and will use our Content ID technology to claim and monetize user-generated videos uploaded to YouTube by Warner Music fans. The partnership is based on a revenue share generated from the ads on the videos, and this makes good business sense for everyone involved: artists and labels can make money from their videos and the YouTube community gets to enjoy them.

But enough talk... let's get back to the rock. Warner's videos will begin appearing on YouTube in the near future.

So does that mean that we can finally use WMG music in our videos while still giving all credit to the artists? I will admit, this is the reason why I stopped making video a while back.

Great I love you Youtube <3

w00t! Finally WMG realized they were shooting themselves in the foot by not participating.

Moosie said...

And now we're supposed to suddenly trust them again, after what they did to us last December? What about the millions of videos they trashed? The thousands of innocent users who got screwed, had their videos removed, even had their accounts suspended, purely because WMG walked out on their agreement? Is all of this damage going to be undone? I doubt it.
As result of their profit mongering action, I have lost all respect for WMG, and I will never again knowingly buy one of their products. I will also never again trust them to keep their word. I doubt that I'm alone in my thinking.

Woot MCR will be on youtube again

My believe is that WMG, started to win less millions with their stupid policy, and they decided to come back so they can win more money with the help of of ppl that puts the videos on!!
I Wich everyone could use free or royalty free music, and send all these big companies away, cause they already getting Miliions of bucks at our cost!!

Stevie Bond said...

I have my doubts, too

It'll be interesting to see what YT User "Therealweeklynews" will think about this

hacky said...

So we can finally post videos with music and video content from WMG again?

I feel youtube should restore the files to the original song of the vids that had to get changed of the songs cus of copyright

AMO said...

Say no to monopoLIES.

bob said...

So will partners be able to make any revenue off of original videos that contain incidental snippets of WMG songs, I wonder? Or will all the ad money go to WMG?

Ena said...

So how can I restore the audio on my videos again? More info please :P

good news n_n

i've a question for you:

have you consider youtube partnership for argentinean users?

illuminate media said...

Music Licencing really isnt complicated.
It is currently broken.
Greed broke it.

Jeremiah said...

This is great! Finally no more "this video contains music licensed by WM and has been removed".

vintageness1986 said...

Sigh, bout time them a-holes decided to let us put their material on here just like we did back then! I have a bunch out WMG content I would love to put on here for my viewers and all.

I am a Fractal said...

so if a youtube partner has monetized his video, are you saying that if it has any owned music content that the only entity making money from the video will change to the music rights holder, even if the whole rest of the video has been created by somebody else?

itsallgood3sm said...

kool hope 2 get an up-date when it goes down...

KOHPelord said...

It's great news... but it has resulted in some older WMG claimed videos with sucessful disputes getting re-claimed. I noticed this as far back as early last month (August). Still unsure on what to do about those.

Charles A. Johnson said...

Hooray! Congrats on clearing the deal. ^^

seanownstheworld said...

my video JUST got taken down due to a copyright claim by WMG =/

Quadunit404 said...

So... you expect us to give WMG forgiveness, despite what happened last December, where YouTube was a battlefield between copyright and fair use? Where millions of innocently uploaded YouTube videos got taken down or muted just because they contained a few seconds of a song created by a band owned by WMG? Where thousands of independent artist's songs were removed by false copyright claims that you so stupidly followed (as usual)? And where hundreds upon thousands of innocent accounts were suspended because they used X amount of seconds of a WMG-owned song in a video that's Y minutes long?

CookiesFLy said...

I'm a bit confused. =S
Am I that stupid =P
But anyways can we use WMG music or anyhthing like that??

brinard98 said...

No guys it doesn't mean we get to use their music in our videos, it just means that now that they're back we can't get away with it anymore.

Corey said...

I guess WMG figured that they were losing the copyright fight as they allowed concert videos of songs to be posted.

thespiritdog said...

Hey guys, I don't know the specifics of the deal between Youtube and Warner Music or what happened before, but weren't the musicians loosing money on the old deal also ?

I really don't know what went on, can anybody explain it to me.

Thanks

Skid said...

The good news is that none of us need to worry about WMG falsely flagging videos anymore. I had video featuring an independent, small-label song posted here, and WMG had it removed despite the fact that the label that released it (Touch and Go records) is connected in NO WAY to the Warner Music Group. I've been hesitant to resubmit it, since they'd falsely flag it again and I'd probably lose my account, but maybe in a few months when they stop flagging junk I'll resubmit it.

As for WMG themselves, I still won't be buying their crap or watching videos that feature it, and I encourage anyone else who's not a complete corporate whore to do the same. Let them suffer.

Good job at twisting this story, YouTube. Now WMG will be watching over us like hawks again. Just like last year.

melissa said...

I know I should be grateful, but no way in hell does this make up for both YT and WMG treating us like dog droppings you scrape off your shoes. In fact, the dog droppings would've probably been treated with better respect.

The two of you got in bed together and decided to kill the creativity and artistic efforts of thousands of users, and now we're supposed to act like it's all hunky dory again and we can just go back to the way things were before.

Make up your mind what you are YouTube. Either remove anything that's not a home movie and have it over with, or leave us alone. And WMG...I have a two word response for you, I'm assuming you rocket scientists can guess what it is.

vmkmatt said...

Great. Just Great. Now videos will have no fair use!
I'm going to get DMCA's by Universal for having Daft Punk in one of my videos. THEY DON'T EVEN OWN DAFT PUNK!

samh said...

I had a video with a WMG owned music. It never stayed up a sec. Audio was muted during Youtube processing of the video.

That video meant something back then... now it's shit.

PISS OFF, WMG!

Sosolid2k said...

And at the end of this multi-year agreement when you can't come to an agreement again, what happens to everyone's videos?

Best off not even bothering using the music if the deal isn't permanent, or else the same thing is bound to happen again when one company gets greedy.

AMO said...

Boycot the FAT music industry. Theres this website is call jamendo is open source music truly free for all made by real artist.

Jacob said...

So we make the videos using their content and they get ALL the money? If their talent can be monetized, is mine worthless?

Isn't that like me making dinner from ingredients I buy at the supermarket, but after it's made, it gets eaten by the corporation that owns the supermarket? I don't even get a bite?

That stinks.

Jacob said...

And when did YouTube suddenly get the authority to make me an employee of the music industry?

Luper said...

Youtube team: Would you kindly help me with my site? My videos are playing very slow. I have received a comment on it from a viewer. I would appreciate it. I don't know how it works on your end, but I want them to not drag. Thank you. Cindy

melissa said...

Jacob--it's worse than that. You're going to be making the dinner from the ingredients you buy at the supermarket, then the corporation that owns the supermarket is going to tell you you're not authorized to make the dinner and eat the food. Then they're going to have you banned from the supermarket.

Well they had to Universal, Sony, Disney, CBS, RCA owns their ass on youtube and now they have an advantage 'cause no trust in TWX!

domenbajde said...

I was reading the earlier YT press releases on WMG, and I have to say that's quite depressing. The use of phrases like "embracing user creativity" and "artists connecting with their audience", while at the same time continuing to use the outlived divisions between "professional creators" and the "audience". You can't have it both ways!

Melissa and Jacob, congrats on pointing out the stupidity of it all!

sunofalightbulb said...

this is very good news. on my music-centered account i've run into a great deal of issue with these guidelines, even though i always encouraged users to support the music and purchase it. hopefully now they understand that their refusal to allow their artist's work on youtube may have harmed their sales instead of forced users to buy without a try.

Mr. said...

From my being, and for the countless amount of videos I had to reupload due to their corporate greed, I still do not forgive WMG.

ralasinchains said...

FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME Warner never removed videos youtube removed the videos

Moosie said...

Try to get it through your head, ralasinchains, that YouTube removed the videos UNDER ORDERS FROM WARNER. They were given no choice in the matter.

useless_innovations said...

Ok All this Copyright stuff is just a BS. I mean as someone already said, remove any video that is not a FULL HOME VIDEO, remove fansubs, remove fandubs, remove comic/anime/toys/tv/movie/software/etc reviews channels and or videos because they are making money with copyrighted stuff. And just turn YouTube into a retarded site full of useless videos. Companies should be grateful with users that put their music/shows or part of/software/w.e. on their videos because that's a "free advertising" (?) for them. Jeez damn greed ruins everything.

Does this mean we'll be able to post videos of ourselves playing WMG cover songs on guitar again? This is real exciting news. By what day in the coming months will we be able to upload WMG content without getting it muted or deleted?

aubster1998 said...

i don't know y they took your video away tough luck 8(

hutsell said...

Not sure if it was intentional, but the news posted was a bit too generic and seems to fail in giving any information for the User to work with (on their former videos), in turn creating several questions (and wondering if this will be cleared up at a later time?); such as: will this be day-one for a new start on audio mutes (that may or may not have been replaced by the up-loader)? Or instead, will those videos return to the original audio; either automatically or by requiring the up-loader to choose to revert to the original audio without having to do the upload again (also meaning: was the original audio suppressed or was it erased)? And finally (well, sort of) would reloading a previous video determined to be a violation of copyright by WMG be a new test on legal status without increasing additional repercussions to the Channels "in good standing" copyright status?

Jacob said...

All they have to say is "we own it". That's the sad part about it. There's no outlet for our anger that will stick. There's nothing we can do because WMG, Sony, and the others are just intellectual property holding companies. I have recordings of artists that signed with label a, which then sold to label b, which then sold to label f, which sold back to b, then the r, which returned it to a, which sold it again to b, which has a new name and different licensing agreement than a, b, or f. If you've every gotten a credit card for 9.99% fixed rate, you know that 5 years later that credit card has been sold several times over, has terms and conditions completely different than the one you originally signed, and has an interest rate of 27%. It's a scheme defined by lawyers that's impenetrable. They know it and they don't care. They treat us like the artists, as a number on a balance sheet. The only people they (pretend to) care about are the politicians (and the lobbyist that buy their influence), more lawyers for the most part, that keep extending copyright. What is it now? 100 years! More? What can we really do? Hit their bottom line and then tell 10 of your friends. Learn their labels, their artists, their products, their companies, their representatives, and refuse to give them money. And tell every single person you know what you did and tell them to do the same. Enough of us and we'll win eventually. We have collective power. We have passion where they have emptiness.

dombaj said...

How about changing the law instead? What would a YouTube community proposal of copyright law be?? :)

Stephen said...

So does that mean that we can finally use WMG music in our videos while still giving all credit to the artists? I will admit, this is the reason why I stopped making video a while back.

I have to agree with Moosie on all their points. Even if WMG has returned and even allows use of their content, their actions over the last year have destroyed my view of them as a respectable company, and I will also boycott anything they create.

Dytrich said...

Surely you MUST be lying. I understand that WMG DOES have a right to the audio in my video, but you yourself said that WMG has allowed their audio to be on Youtube. You surely would not spread false information. You cannot tell somebody they can do something and then just tell them that they can't when you pretty much wrote a document and signed it (or in this case, writing an article which would signify your digital signature.)

Neil Kevin said...

Warner might prefer to keep the videos in its channel, to increase their allure to advertisers by controlling what appears around the videos. But people want videos on youtube.

Good, I am glad they decided to come to their senses. I was so tired of watching videos of people, who 1) had no idea that they music they had in the background was from Warner, and had it removed by you Tube. or 2) had it replaced by different music. I watch dance vids sometimes, and got frustrated because the music they were supposed to dance to was not the music that ended up on You tube. good job for getting them back.

Youtube sucks ass. Dispute forms = fail. They should just remove that option because disputes do not work. Like this one . .

"I have followed the copyright law correctly, its non-profit and the songs are credited." or "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

Audio owned by WMG will only last for a week or 2. After that Youtube will deny the dispute and, if the dispute was used several times. They'll suspended you. Why can't WMG just do what UMG does with the pop-up Itunes ad.
