Masthead Undergoes Redesign
You may notice something looks a little different about our masthead (top navigational area on the homepage) today, and that's because we've done a bit of housecleaning. We've streamlined and simplified the design to focus on the primary experience of YouTube: watching a video. The left side is dedicated to exploration: finding videos to watch through search and browse. The right side is all about organization of the videos that matter most to you: your subscriptions, your recent viewing history, and your own uploads.
A few features have been removed from this area, to keep it as clean and functional as possible. Unless you have items in your Quicklist or Inbox, they will not appear on the homepage, and the country and language pulldown menus, once at the very top of the page, are now in the footer.
Next up, we'll be focusing on giving you the controls to make the masthead more personalized.

How about fixing the glitch that says there is a message in the inbox when there isn't?
I liked the old Web 2.0 style buttons on the nav-bar, but i see where you guys are going with this. Cant wait to see the customization features.
It's an improvement, although the text on the right side looks like it's floating in the middle of nowhere. It looks a bit unfinished.

For some reason, this has been my version of youtube for the past few weeks...
I cannot see my inbox envelope...I cant tell I have a message :( I want that back..Otherwise...it looks fine..clean and simple say we can get to the good stuff..I agree with Multyke..INBOX BACK PLEASE!

It's not clean! It's cluttered, busy and unappealing.
I think the last design was more functional.
PS. I am very annoyed with YouTube because my account was suspended today. It had over 600 subscribers and 150 videos.
I kind of liked it better before just because of the feel of it. Now it looks a bit plain. But I'm looking forward to the customization, that should be cool! :)
There's a glitch in the Opera browser, when I try to click my name, the menu blocks it.
could we have the Quicklist as a drop down from Videos? Please??
It looks great, but Quicklist should be up there, or at least in the drop-down.
As mentioned already, there are alerts telling me I have unread messages, videos shared with me, and comments when they have all been read several times. There aren't even any videos in my shard folder.
Also, I would really like to see a "mark as viewed" function for my Subscription Module, because I will get the same videos in that modules even several days after it is uploaded, and after I have watched it. It is quite a hassle to keep clicking on old videos, and going back to the homepage just to clear out my Subscriptions Module!
Fix the inbox glitch please? Apart from that it looks great :D

Interesting change. Just another thing to get used to though, really. I liked the Upload button instead of a hyperlink alone, but that's OK I guess. The interface as a whole does look a bit cleaner too. If you want you can make it so the auto-pulldown menu (when you hover over your username) displays the links in ABC order, unless you wanted to put the most frequently used ones at the top of the list.
Otherwise it looks pretty good overall.
While I must admit, it'll take some getting used to (because it looks extremely plain) but it puts everything in focal points, which I like, it makes things easier to find.

It's an improvement. I like it a lot actually, which is surprising because I'm timid about site changes.
However, I feel like you're trying to disassociate with user videos again. The subscriptions are now pushed away from the logo, but subscriptions are what make youtube youtube!
Thanks you for a clean design, but I think people will calm down if you move the subscriptions button over to the left. Thank you for allowing us to post comments, and if you read them, sorry of the people who use caps lock. They'll grow out of it. :)

Personally, I approve. Don't let anyone slow progress for the better. You guys are professional web designers and know what's best for functionality, anyone complaining here just about the general change rather than a specific glitch has their arguments standing on nothing but air.

I think you went just a little bit overboard, for example the quicklist. What's quick about it if it isn't quickly reachable? And the missing inbox icon makes it more confusing. But overall, it looks more nice and tidy.

Most people like to open videos in a new tab, you broke that ability when you changed the subscription center. Now when you right-click all subscription center links lead to to:

If it's going to be customizable later, as in giving users the ability to re-add some of the things that were removed from it at the moment, then I don't see much of a problem with it. I do like how it takes up less space.

Certainly a step in the right direction. Some little functionality buggeroo's but nothing too bad. But please take a leaf from Vimeo's book: plain is not equal to simple and clean. But thank God those horrid gradients are gone... Yikes! Keep it up guys, I can't wait for your custom features to be unveiled!

I SEEN THIS THIS DESIGN ABOUT A MONTH AGO THEY CHANGED IT TO THIS FOR LIKE 5 MINUTES THEN CHANGED IT BACK, I WAS WONDERING WHEN I WOULD SEE IT AGAIN.
I honestly think it looks terrible, and it's really cluttered and counter-intuitive. Please bring the old one back, I loved it. It really ruined my experience with YouTube today, as well as make the site much less navigable.
I liked the old one a bit better, but this one is alright. However, I really dislike the way everything on the right just floats there. It looks terrible and cluttered. Is there any way to make it so that doesn't look like butt?
I also hate how everything except the username is bolded. I loved how the username was bolded in the last iteration, it made it stand out among everything else, and I could locate the drop menu quickly because of it. Now the setup is confusing.
Hell, my entire beef is because of how godawful the right side looks and operates. Fix the right side and I'll be good.

It's stripped down to basically no design at all and I think it's horrid. I'm all for simple, but simple designs. Not simple to the point of there being nothing.

I think reverting to the prior design should be an option. The new design might be a bit more streamlined but it lacks the convienence of the prior masthead

I thought the other Youtube was way better! The gray bar was a big one, and the inbox envelope. The gray bar seperated the video stuff from the top stuff, and it worked perfectly. Search was in a good place, near the middle (like google) And the buttons looked good too, especially upload. And I like having one dropdown menu more than the seperated stuff too. Please make an option to switch back! I hate the blank space and plain text. It's just boring.

-the glitch that says you didn't watch a video from your subs list but you did a few days ago. If that made sense lol. Videos tend to come onto my list and start clogging it up when they've been watched before

I liked the gray boxes around "Home" "Videos" "Channels" ect. I prefer the older masthead but I don't really care just fix the annoying inbox glitch.

umm yeah the tabs were alot cleaner and easy on the eyes.made things easy (unlike all your other "changes" that ended up drawbacks for everyone) And just a question...when you gonna fix the damn views. You views freeze if you spam views is insulting to me. thats why the change was implemented, to stop the cheaters, now quit freezing honest users like us

The new channel design from a couple of months ago is nice, but the Masthead? In three words: Who asked you? This is OUR YouTube, you just make loads of money off of it.
Let me Mouse3-click on the youtube icon so it opens in a new tab instead of just opening it. Everything else just opens in a different tab as it should.
I have an idea, how about you STOP CHANGING THINGS! Focus on making new features, or fixing glitches, instead. Why the hell do you keep changing the layout? It's a pointless waste of time! Speaking of glitches, fix the message box glitch!

I love it, I feel like my search goes faster. But I'm not sure if that's true or if it's just me.
I used to be able to link to you tube videos in a way that enabled full screen straight off the URL. Simply add '_popup' after '/watch' within the URL and the link would automatically direct to a full screen play. This doesn't work anymore. Is there a new way in which to accomplish this?

So basically you removed all of the buttons/graphics and replaced them with simple hyperlinks. That must have taken a whole 30 seconds to redesign.
My opinion? It looks plain and unfinished, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I like that you're at least offering a way to customize it now.

hey youtube :D in my opinion i prefer the old design this design somewhat looks amateruish as if someone has just put it together in a quick few seconds, like many people have stated it doesnt realy look too appealing to me :( i've always though of that gray bar as an iconic reference of youtube which matches well with the white BG please rethink this design throigh and put back the option to see our new messages with the little envelope at the top :) and also there's a glitch with the inbox menu stating i have messages when i have already cleared them all please look into this (:

My first impression of the new lay-out is good. I like it, no big changes.. the only this i don't like is the language settings being moved to the footer. Since im in the Netherlands i often find my language or location changed into Dutch or The Netherlands. So i have to change it quiet often, and now i have to scroll down all the way to do that..

In Opera, when I hover over my username, the box covers my username and I'm not able to click it to get to my channel (in Firefox it appears under my username, so I don't have this problem).
Also, please bring back the "inbox" and "my account" links! I'm pretty sure that most people use them more often than "subscriptions" or "history," so I have no idea why you got rid of them.
Typical YouTube illogic. You say you're going to give us more choice but first you change things around. If we're getting the ability to customize the masthead, why not leave things be and let us make the changes we want. No, that's too hard to do.
Please change things back to the way they were. Alternatively, whenever we get the ability to customize the masthead, include the option of reverting back to the previous design as an all-inclusive choice.
In the interim, however, there are two minor changes that would very much be appreciated. Neither one of which will adversely affect this new design. Firstly, as others have also asked, please restore the inbox. It should be visible, even if there's no new mail. Secondly, please restore the search box default setting to 'Do not provide query suggestions'. The suggestions are HIGHLY annoying. Allowing for them can be a masthead option but the default should always be that they are turned off.

It's very unappealing, but, if you give the options to personalize it, then that's okay.

THE NEW CHANNELS SUCK. THIS SHIT SUCKS. Seriously. It just floats out into no where, theres no boundaries or anything, it reminds me of webpages back in the day when images on a webpage were just a crazy idea.
Some of the YouTube user who have commented have said that "My inbox isn't there anymore?!" Need to learn how to read. They JUST said in the blog post that your inbox won't show up anymore unless you have a message.

Congratulations. You have successfully made YouTube hard to navigate through. How about shutting this horrible design down until you DO give us the option to customize it?
And how come everytime the community gets used to a design you create, you decide it's time to change it? Jesus christ focus on the important aspect of YouTube, "the videos."
You always make new things confusing and not at all easier to navigate through. In this case, people use their inboxes for more than just checking their mail. Some people need to compose messages to people. How are they going to get to their inbox if there's no Inbox icon?!?
YouTube Team, if you truly are reading the feedback on this, then please ignore all those who state that this is user friendly and/or clean, it's not user friendly, nor is it clean. It's a mess, and it's broken, especially under Opera. Please change the masthead back.
Hopefully this comment isn't ignored. I know, I'm just an average user, no partnership, or real importance, but the new look is in no way streamlined or cleaned. It looks, unfinished if anything, and the whole homepage looks like an array of different advertisements and thumbnails. The next step needs to be something like an entire site re-haul, because the new one is way too open and white, and its organization is just subpar. Everything is its own little module, and it looks sloppy. It's disappointing and confusing. Please find a way to make the site design friendlier, because were bordering on Vimeo levels now, and thats no area you want to be in.
I don't really like it that much. I watched one of Jawed's videos about YouTube, now YouTube sorta looks like an index sorta thing, now everything is sorta made out of links, in a way. I liked how there were more buttons, cause it added color to YouTube, which makes the users more comfortable, and wanting to return even more. i LOVE the right side... it's much cleaner and pretty much perfect, but the left side looks a bit weird.
Also i would LOVE IT if there was a drop down from the "Videos" link (just like the dropdown from our accounts name) that had things like Popular, Most viewed, and HD... pleaaase

Seems like a step back, I like the background graphics for the navigation bar in the old design.
I like it. I was about to say "I guess I have to play a guessing game of weather I have any PMs or not" but then I saw it only shows when you have messages. That really good. But it would be awesome if there was a thing that popped up on the masthead when get a new personal message.

I like the new masthead (I did not know it was called that). It's nice, though I think now the homepage has too much white space.
I like that the Quicklist link only appears when items are added.

Great update! Customization should have change of colors available and also perhaps on the new beta channels the masthead changes color to what the theme is for the channel if the owner of the channel wants it.

I like the new design, very simple. One thing that annoys me though is the inbox glitch when it says you have mail when there's nothing in there and apparently I'm not the only person with this problem. If that could be fixed that would be awesome. Also, I think that being able to customize the masthead would be aweosme :O
Please bring back the inbox envelope. I want to see the envelope whether or not I have a new message.
Also please make the username clickable in Opera.
You've got a Very Bad bug in Update Videos right now.... it is impossible to open the drop down arrows, such as to enable/disable ratings. Once it is clicked the page refreshes instead and says your video has been updated, when nothing at all has been done. Tested in Google Chrome and Firefox.

I miss the direct click on the account-link and that i can not directly access my inbox when i have no new messages. since I use both items very often (more often than the protocol and subscriptions), I think it was a bad decision to hide the two links.
I'm ok with the change, it is more simple. I'm a little bit weird with people who cursed just because of this change..
