Upload Size Doubles + HD Tips

Many of you have been asking for an increase in the size limit of your uploads. We're happy to announce that the size of standard uploads has doubled from 1GB to 2GB. The increase means you can upload longer videos at a higher resolution as well as large HD files directly from your camera.

In addition, the team's implemented some new features to make it easier for you to show these videos off to the world. The changes allow you to share links directly to the HD version of your video, as well as embed the HD version on your blog or website. Here's how:

* To share a link to the HD version of your video, simply append &hd=1 to the end of the URL. This means the video will start playing in HD as soon as someone follows the link. Cool, huh?

* To embed the HD version of a video on a website or blog, click the 'customize' button to the right of the embed box on the video page. Some options will appear; simply check 'play in HD'. The embed code that's generated will cause the video to start playing in HD as soon as a viewer clicks play. We recommend embedding HD videos at the largest size (853x505) for maximum enjoyment.

myinnereyemike7 said...: I received a notice that ALL personal You Tube channels will become Beta channels on July 15th. That's disappointing to me. I personally don't like the new Beta channels. I like to play the videos in full screen, I don't see any way to do that with Beta. I also don't see any difference in picture quality. I thought using the HQ button worked well enough. I had absolutely no complaints before, but I do now. I really don't appreciate being forced into the Beta channel format. I like to have a choice. Thank you very much for this. I had a question though; I have hi-speed internet and have my choice set to ALWAYS play the HD version. Does this preference transcend to external websites with YT videos embedded? Bcz on my site (TonyaTko) the videos look crisp and clear at the present resolution.... so if this is bcz I have HD checked I'd like to know, bcz if the standard person can see it that clearly as well then there is no need for me to change anything.

TonyaTko said...: I think you're still limited by the 10 minutes... but the file SIZE can be larger ie: 1gig - 2gigs.

Case in Point: You can upload a 10 minute video in low quality and the file size is 500 megabytes OR you can upload a 10 minute video in high definition and the file size be 1,000 megabytes (which is 1 gig)... this increase is space will allow more ppl to upload HIGHER quality videos... but not longer.

I hope you understand.

I still feel there should be no time limit, no-one is ever gonna need 2GB for a video file, especially since you don't allow the matroska video carrier, AVI uses such a large overhead that the space is wasted!; July 1, 2009 10:57 AM

But I always wanted people to see at least one of my videos in HD. I might start making not making finishing a video that I haven't have the time and patience to finish. GVOLTT4 said...: Well, I can understand the size of the video file that can be uploaded is doubled because people requested, but why not increase the maximum video length as well? I can understand the control of copyrighted content, but plenty of copyright infringements can be made under the current 11 (yes, not 10) minute limit. I'm not saying that copyright infringement should be made, but saying you can't upload videos longer than 10...err...11 minutes unless you are a partner or have a director account from before 2007 because of potential for copyright infringement is a stupid reason. Fix this 11-minute length, increase it to 20, maybe even 30 minutes, and you'd be helping out a lot of users that have to cut their own video short solely because of an 11-minute limit. This, coupled with an option to retain the current channel design, will allow many users to remain on Youtube, rather than cause them to switch to another video site because of the 11-minute limit and the forced usage of the new channels. mu11ac123 said...: i like the new 2GB option on the videos that's Great, However 11 minutes for a single video is a bit short - you have many youtubers (i am one my self) that uploaded videos 10 minutes and 59 seconds because of the time limit and yet we still have like another 5 minutes left and then you have to upload again for part... Therefore i think Non-Partnership people should get the chance to upload videos atleast 15 minutes long. Partners have a prioroty over everyone else and its really unfair

It seems to happen to older computers only...allthough these older computers would previously (before this update) even play 2 Hd's in parallel flawlessly.

Conclusion the new update seems to put a much higher load on your PC's...so much higher that it cant play them at the normal frame-rate anymore (only the high-end-pc's wil play correctly) this has nothing to do with the HD itself but only with the new player-update.

A 10 minutes long HD (1280*720) video file has pretty good quality at 5 mb/s in H.264 format (VBR, 2 pass). At 8 mb/s the file size of a 10 minutes long video is only 600 megs, encoding beyond 8 mb/s bitrate won't make the quality better (especially, because YouTube converts the uploaded HD video's bitrate to 2(!) mb/s)

So 500 MB file size limit would be okay for 10 minutes, and a time limit increase to 20 minutes would be more useful, even with 1 GB file limit.

but that videos were 19 min each , and i didnt have any software to cut the videos , so i had to choose another site to put the videos and explain to the client that youtube doesn´t accept videos more than 10 min , i agree that it is a good rule to avoid piracy but if you want people to upload videos you should think another way to compensate us "the users".
