An Update On What's Happening in Iran

It has been one week since Iran's contested presidential election, and YouTube has been flooded with footage from the streets of Tehran and other cities, documenting the civil unrest that is unfolding there. In the past few days, many Iranians have participated in violent demonstrations, held silent rallies to protest the elections, and grieved for those killed as a result of deadly clashes with the Basij, Iran's auxiliary police force. In the past 36 hours, the foreign media has all but been expelled from the country, making the role of Iranian citizens even more critical in shedding light on what is happening there.

Yesterday, opposing candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi called for a day of mourning to honor eight of his supporters who have died since the protests began. As you can see in this clip, a massive number of protesters gathered (some reports are in the hundreds of thousands), dressed in black, to peacefully pay their respects to the fallen and demonstrate their perseverance in seeking justice. A candlelight vigil was held on Thursday night, and Mousavi himself addressed the crowd and urged his supporters to stand up against corruption. Yet due to the Iranian government's crackdowns on foreign media, this speech received no airtime, inside or outside of Iran. The only clip we've seen of it on YouTube lasts just 20 seconds, but it illustrates the incredible power and energy of the crowd amassed.

In stark contrast to Mousavi's speech, Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed the Iranian people today, insisting that they accept Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's victory. Khamenei told Iranians, "If there is any bloodshed, leaders of the protests will be held directly responsible." The speech was broadcast on national television, and footage is available here:

Since I can't find anywhere else on the website to post a complaint I'm going to do it here.

So you've apparently got TV shows on here now ala Hulu, and I started watching something called Shigurui: Death Frenzy last week, left it for a day, came back and it was gone.

Not sure what's up with that but I can tell you one thing, I'm not going to be watching TV shows on here anymore since I have no idea when they'll be pulled.

Back to Hulu.

I've heard from some Iranians that some of the videos uploaded by them are being flagged by the regime agents and removed automatically.

You are so right. let us not forget that our example of 'democracy' is a constant argument of the definition of a 'republic' We are trying to spread the 'good word' across the globe but our ex-president Bush JR. was appointed by a court. He lost the popular vote but our election laws made him president. Only in America do our laws and Ideas conflict when it comes to the definition of "freedom" Oh you can vote for who you want now but it was still a mess 8 1/2 years ago. New country and new rules. Or as some of my over seas friends would call it. What a beautiful CUNTry!

Three terms comes to my mind about Supreme leader Khamenei's and President Ahmadinejad's crackdown of the protest on the 2009 presidential elections. HIPOCRITS, HIPOCRITS and HYPOCRITS! Okay maybe this is just one term, but one of the most significant ones. The two embrace democracy, but don't respect it if against their selfish interests. They speak out about the violations of human rights by Israeli forces in Palestine and Lebanon, but disregard them in their nation of rule. To be frank, I don't know how these men can look into the mirror and see themselves as leading for the good.

I am sure that the iranien have right to protest, but in the reality they have to accept the dimocracy and accept the result of this election, because if the don´t agree whith, the others will engerent in their afaires.

I have yet to hear anything from Ahmadinejad regarding all this or have I missed some press conference or TV statement regarding this alleged election fraud. I believe he has been conspicuous bye his absence in all this????????

What puzzles me is why has Mousavi and Rafsanjani stuck their heads above the parapet in all this and why were they even allowed to contest by the clerics ???? this stinks of a coup !!!! I will take a shot and say that I suspect Ahmadinejad is striking out for Number 1 in Iran!!!!!!

I'm afraid this comment has nothing to do with Iran. It has to do with the fact that there is no obvious way to report an apparent bug to youtube. Since I'm a newbie to uploading, perhaps someone could clue me in. I uploaded 2 short videos with the same name but different aspect ratios for both std and wide screens. Although they both show up in my account, only one appears in a search. Anybody know why?
