Experience YouTube XL on the Big Screen

Last January we introduced a video website especially for people who wanted to access YouTube videos through their Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii game consoles. You could say we've now "expanded" on that. Just as there's a YouTube browser for mobile devices, the new YouTube XL is optimized for watching YouTube videos on any large screen.

In addition to an all new design offering large text and simplified navigation, YouTube XL offers a continuous play feature, which lets you search for a topic on YouTube and then press "play" once to watch all of the videos sequentially on that topic. Also, getting from one video to the next takes just a few clicks, and you can control the action with a blue tooth enabled remote control, or even some mobile phones.

With millions of HD playbacks daily, YouTube is now bringing popular YouTube favorites like "Where the Hell is Matt?" to the big screen in HD. Also better when bigger: check out larger-than-life roller coaster point-of-view videos, work-out routines with the screen out of high-kick range, university lectures where you can read the blackboard, and home videos the whole family can watch together.

Yeah, that's actually pretty bad ass.

Sounds interesting. Wish there was a supported application to use YouTube on the Xbox360 though, but I guess that's the downside of a console without a real browser.

Anyway, keep up the great work YouTube!

Nice. Just seen the PS3 conference. Would be great to have a YouTube application, like on the iPod Touch/iPhone.

This is cool and all but could you please add play lists to the system? It would be great when we have our own accounts and look forward to watching a few videos consecutively. It worked fine on the Wii before the update (FYI).

Great feature. The TV cable companies should be very very worried.

Looks great. I'd love to be able to see my subscriptions using that interface.

Still no HQ option, still no HD option. Also, piss poor performance in the PS3 browser (but that could be Sony's fault). On top of that I got a Javascript error within the first 5 minutes of trying this out. Great work YouTube! *cough*

HD seems essential to an "expanded" viewing experience...

also, will annotations and links (controllable via remote) be offered?

It's about time that this trend finally picked up. I remember watching YouTube videos on the Wii a couple of years ago, and the novelty of it never broke the surface of mainstream media.

I'm genuinely looking forward to YouTube XL though. It's revolutionizing how everyone consumes media, but it's finally adapting to how young people have always consumed content.

I just ran YouTube XL on the Wii, totally didn't know it existed before then but I browse videos on the Wii all the time so it was quite a surprise. Must say, XL on the Wii is great! It's so nice to actually have all the buttons on the screen.

It would be nice to have the same permanent links for YouTube and YouTube XL, it is sometimes hard to find some videos you already seen in normal YouTube

I'm not able to use Playlists on Wii . Selecting a Playlist brings up a blank view screen with no description beside it. Under the view screen, are the videos in the list. Clicking on the first video doesn't start it, but makes all the videos disappear from the list under the view screen. At this point, the view screen is black and there are no thumbnails or descriptions . It's just a blank interface.

I was able load a Bill Nye Playlist. It was the Brady Bunch Playlist that had the aforementioned problems. It even disappeared from the Youtube and Youtube XL list momentarily. The Nye list, however, won't continue to the next video automatically. I've tried the "Play next video when current video ends" setting both ways. These are my first Playlists ever. I've had no need to create Playlists, as video's are already arranged in ordered playlists by uploaders. When I select the "Playlist Videos" from the dropdown in XL from the Nye uploader, I'm presented with icons of TV's with red exclamation points in them. This user does have Playlists that show and function in regular Youtube.

Youtube XL is choppy on the Wii compared to regular Youtube.

On Wii, the radio buttons in the setting work, but one tell if they are selected by looking at them.

I've recently tried Opera on my desktop and noticed problems with Google sites when using it. Are there incompatibility issues with Youtube XL and Opera for the Wii?

Any chance CBS will participate in XL so I can watch Star Trek TOS using Flash 7?

So, XL only offers HD? If it is all HD, that could be why the Wii performance staggers. Youtube XL and HD in regular Youtube staggers on my computer too. I'm running a little under 8mbps. Apparently that can't handle HQ/HD (I assume they're the same thing). Could we get an option in XL To turn off HD?

Much as this is an awesome feature with the Wii's Internet Channel; there are some faults that make this a bit sluggish to navigate. For starters, most of the videos I watch are from subscriptions, and the problem I am having is that I can only play the most recent of these videos. It would be nice that I can access the list of videos the user has that I had subscribed.

ujyhu said...

On the Wii, there's a lot more functionality on regular Youtube. Youtube XL's fullscreen mode is choppy. If it's because it goes to a higher quality at that point, I don't notice an improvement in pixelization. I'm guessing the fullscreen on regular Youtube would be just as bad on the Wii if regular Youtube fullscreen worked on the Wii. At this point, regular Youtube on the Wii is the best way to go. However, if people don't know how to avoid the redirect to Youtube XL, they will think Youtube on the Wii is horrible. You may want to consider your image.

BTW, it would be nice if the screen's menu bar on regular Youtube were dark so it wouldn't stand out on the Wii when aspect ratio requires it or the background to be left on the screen.

Thank you.

Please define 'large screen'. I understand for TV, but how big of TV screen? Can I play them on a very large screen /projector like at a fundraising event of or office?

Yeah, this needs to be fixed up. Especially for Wii. I like being able to view YouTube videos from the comfort of my own couch instead of hunched over the computer. It's also convenient when I wanna show videos to my friends. YouTube XL is great for me functionally.

However, the severely lacking video quality and bafflingly slow streaming speeds really don't help at all. If I can watch perfectly decent quality videos on the normal YouTube site through the Wii Browser, why do get such cruddy quality on YouTube XL? I know the Wii Browser isn't exactly the most sophisticated piece of software, but YouTube XL for Wii should take advantage of whatever Wii Browser compatible-streaming method YouTube has at it's disposal to provide high quality video.

PS. What I always have been crossing my fingers for is an official YouTube Channel for the Wii. In the UK, BBC has provided a streaming video service for the Wii and Nintendo's own Nintendo Channel provides high quality streaming video content. A dedicated YouTube Channel should be a no brainer. Try working on that!
