YouTube Project v51: Words via Wordle
If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, you might remember that a few weeks ago we asked you two questions:
* What three adjectives describe the YouTube of today? #youtubetoday
* What three adjectives describe your ideal YouTube of the future? #youtubefuture
We were collecting these responses for an internal "visioning" exercise -- that's a fancy design term for wondering what we'd like to be when we grow up. In other words, we have a pretty good sense of what we are today, but we are looking to explore the possible future paths your experience on YouTube could take in the years to come. We're calling this whole effort YouTube Project v51. For you die-hard YouTube fans and blog followers, you may know that we number major releases and just recently reached v39. Well, we wanted to make sure the team thought way into the future, so we chose v51 as a far-off target. (Plus, it brings to mind Area 51 and futuristic alien technology, which seems appropriate.) There are a lot of different design and research methods we're using in YouTube Project v51, and we're looking forward to sharing some of them with you in the weeks to come.
It was fun and inspiring to see the words you came up with to describe the YouTube of today and the YouTube of tomorrow. We plugged the submitted terms into Wordle, a data visualization tool, to come up with tag clouds, and we want to share them with you.

Big poster versions of these have been hanging in our office micro-kitchens and lots of entertaining, spirited discussions have happened in response to them. It's one of many ways we work to bring your voice into our day-to-day work. These artifacts serve as reminders of why we do what we do: to provide entertaining and powerful experiences to you, our users.

Why do you allow nudity on the tv shows and movies but not from regular YouTube accounts? If the rest of us decide to post any nudity, we would get our videos removed, yet you allow movies and TV shows with nudity, and not only that, we can't even flag them! When there is the Arabic language here?
Just as I expected, people want clean content, therefore more moderators. This request has been around for a while and you guys didn't considered it. Maybe now you're going to change your minds. Honestly, I'm sick of all this comment reporting. Why do you want the users to do your job, when they only have to post, watch, rate and comment on videos?
What else can I see from these graphs? Well, I can see that people want to be able to use YouTube as a TV channel. Sometimes I do, too. And believe me, playlists are simply not enough. By the way, is there a option to play all the videos of a user (channel)? If there is, it isn't promoted enough, because I couldn't see it.
I also see that the word "social" has been mentioned. I was expecting it to be mentioned more often, but it seems it's not. That's because even though YouTube has been designed as a place to meet people and communicate, it's not (fully) used like that. You know what would help here? Real-time chat. Either use more AJAX on refreshing the comments list, either add a chat option, besides the comments one (I prefer the first way).
There are a lot of other things I could say, but this is not the place and time to say them. One more advice, YouTube team - be creative!
"unrestricted" as a word for Youtube of tomorrow - I wish that could be true...
P.S. Use a TV-like rating system. The users may want to limit videos to people below some ages. For example, PA (requires parents' approval), 12+, 15+, 18+ (you know what these mean). And in order to make sure people rate their own videos the way they should, also add a option for the public to rate them. This way, you combine TV "features" with social interactions... or something like that. ;)

No UMG/WMG and less inbox glitches would be better...I cringe at the sight of new messages because I can't delete them...And no "no swearing" rule. Youtube's for everyone. The majority of youtubers are teens, so why censor videos that teens watch?

In my opinion the future also pass by having more languages, there are many users don´t understand english,in the future a more intuitive, and perhaps simple interface,maybe online webcam chats,more widgets, more live broadcasting, more contests like music, art, science,technology, more partnershios with other companys to make a better global network comunication, well in the future everything is possible, so BE CREATIVE. P.S.: I´M EXPECTING SOON THE V51 (Roswell Secret) :)

Gotta say, after reading the comments on this, I love WeaselTheGeek's suggestions. Especially the age rating one. YouTube has grown much since its inception in that people in every age group use it, and rating content so that certain age groups that should not see certain content don't see the content in question would help SO much. On a side note, I love how you didn't just put positive comments in your word clouds. It seems like you're really trying to pull things together, and I commend you for that.
YouTube of Tomorrow looks pretty nice, but it seems that it will be a lot less "AWESOME" then YouTube of Today.

Possibly worth noting that at a glance of the display of words above I mistook "videos'' for vimeo. Anyone else? (I think it's because of the way most of us are creatures of habit and view collections like this clockwise fashion.) the placement of "simple, amazing, and amusing" might play a part in that effect as well. If that type of effect is occurring with others it could be worth giving that arrangement a "stir". vimeo?.....no no no
I'm frankly concerned with the word "paid" in the second one. If you make this a pay site in ANY WAY, I can guarantee you will lose 90% of your userbase. But that's never concerned you anyways, has it? You've always had a policy of screwing over your users, ever since you gave up your individuality to the faceless superconglomerate that is Google. One thing that isn't in the top part that should be is "topheavy". With mega partners and now movies and TV shows, coupled with false flagging and votebotting, it is becoming harder and harder for small channels to grow. Its supposed to be youtube, not themtube. I would like to see changes made where someone makes good videos and comes up, and i am finding out how hard that it is. The YouTube of today is dying but almost dead. The YouTube of tomorrow IS dead with ads plastered all over and 90% of videos removed due to copyright infringement. Well, for a start, being able to post videos longer than 10 min would be cool as well as upping the file size limit to 3 gig for standard def and 6 gig for high def would be the most productive improvements for the everyday user. We just do not have enough time allowance to post sermons or expositions of bible passages, or for the secular world, say, speeches and lectures and such. Please lift these restrictions YouTube!

What I've noticed a lot of people agreeing to Youtube's policies is that they don't question about anything. All they do is say "great job Youtube" or "Keep up the good work youtube" without objecting the possibilities that this is not for your own benefit. Many people are the sheep, being told what to do, not questioning with questions like "If " or "But". I Implore people, not just from youtube, but to everyone to ask questions, present them to the higher ups. Demand your place of 6 billion others of what you want to change and what you want to stay in place. Become more open minded to the ideals of others and the ideals of yourself. Even question yourself on your own beliefs and say if it is right or wrong. We are created on this blue marble to question and understand the human condition and our human rights. Not just stand and do whatever the larger entity wants you to do. We are human beings God Damn it!; and its time to start becoming the black sheep of the herd.

You've done a great job improving video quality by providing the HD option, creating a solid recommendation system, and personalizing the whole site by offering videos specifically to one user that he/she may particularly like. These are all great improvements, but the one thing that I still find extremely frustrating to use is YouTube's commenting system. It's incredibly inconvenient to use, and when you want to see more comments, there are so many on one page that it takes a long time to load. Often times my comments don't even post, and if someone's replied to my comment and i want to reply, I have to go back to the entire list of comments and find the specific page with my specific comment. The whole system is just ridiculously inefficient and outdated. You should take a hint from Facebook or LiveJournal, who both have great commenting systems. If you're going to email-notify me of a reply, perhaps offer an embedded commenting system in the actual email, or even just provide a direct link to the actual comment so that people don't have to go searching.
So overall - don't get me wrong, I love YouTube. I think the majority of what you all have done to innovate is great. However, the commenting system is ridiculously outdated and needs a ton of improvement.
One more thing -- In the comment I just posted, I wanted to separate it into paragraphs so as to make it easier to read. But the primitive nature of comments on YouTube apparently means that no customization is allowed? Not even a break between lines?
Also - embedded ads are really annoying. But I guess you guys aren't going to be doing anything about that.
