Release Notes: 4/30/09
Hello! Yesterday we had another release -- v38, if you're counting -- but if you've been reading this blog, you'll know that lots has happened between the last Release Notes post and today. We launched our RealTime beta, a new look for the homepage, a destination for TV and movie content, and CaptionEditor in TestTube. We try to be nimble and push out new features or fixes as often as they're ready. Let us know what you think of these latest updates:
* New Options for Uploaders: In our continued effort to give you ultimate control over how your videos are presented, uploaders can now tweak the appearance of their video when played on YouTube or in an embedded player. Just insert any of the hint tags below into the tags field of your video and voila!
yt:crop=16:9 (zooms in on the 16:9 area, removes windowboxing)
yt:stretch=16:9 (fixes anamorphic content by scaling to 16:9)
yt:stretch=4:3 (fixes 720x480 content that is the wrong aspect ratio by scaling to 4:3)
yt:quality=high (default to a high quality stream, depending on availability)
* HD Browsing Goes Global: Add Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and U.K. to the list of countries where you can browse the most popular HD videos in the region.
* AudioSwap Adds Recommendations: If your video contained an audio track that was not authorized for use on YouTube, the Recommended Tracks feature in AudioSwap will help you quickly find fully licensed songs to replace your original audio track. Recommendations are based on a combination of popularity and, for audio-matched videos, similarity to the original track. The three tracks being used most often are "Bodies" by Drowning Pool, "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence, and "Paralyzer" by Finger Eleven.
* Subscription Tab in More Places: We added a new "Subscriptions" tab to the top of the page a few weeks ago for anyone with an account who sets his or her country preference to "Worldwide." Starting today, the Subscriptions tab is available on any of our English-language sites, and we'll add it for other languages soon, too. Why is this important? Simple -- we hope to build stronger connections between video creators and their audiences by making subscriptions more prominent on YouTube. Please let us know if this change has positively impacted your viewership.
* Subscription Suggestions: Building on our new subscriptions tab, users without any subscriptions who visit the subscription center will now see some channel suggestions (a random set of popular channels) to help them get started using this key YouTube feature. If you already have some subscriptions, you can see the suggestions, too -- just click on "About Subscription Center" in the upper-right corner of the subscriptions center.
* Username Alternatives: YouTube is a big place these days and many channel names are taken. But starting today, if your desired username is already in use when you sign up for an account, we'll offer some alternates, hopefully reducing the head-scratching that can come from trying to figure out a handle that you like and is available. Right now this is in test mode, but we expect it to go 100% soon.
* A Tooltip to Help With Precise Seeking: If someone tells you to check out their video at two minutes, now it's easy to find that precise point. As you drag the thumb (what we call the little circle) back and forth, a shiny new tooltip will tell you exactly where you are in the video.

You should be able to click on the play bar, the tool tip will stay it place, and allow you to copy a time tagged URL using #t=1m2s format.

The new tooltip is great; it's always been hard to get to exactly where you want in a video until now. It was a small thing, but made a big different.
The Subscription tab in the toolbar is unnecessary, though. I hope not too much is added to the toolbar from now on.
The last thing is cool. I don't get how to do the first thing. "Just insert any of the hint tags below into the tags field of your video and voila!" What does that mean?

Hopefully this will help everyone.
In the search results, YouTube also changed "sort by: date added" to sort by newest and sort by oldest.
These are great updates.
Two suggestions for future updates:
1.) In the search results, I would like to be able to retain the sort order as a new search is performed.
2.) In the videos tab, make the numbers at the bottom of the page larger. The numbers I am referring to are page numbers "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Next".
Folks, the site has been very slow for a while. The homepage seems to load after 'only' a few seconds, but search was down for a good long time today. In addition, no matter the status of the rest of the site, video loading seems to constantly hang up, and for the times when it actually does download a few seconds of video, it does so at only a fraction of the speed I know it could.

In my book, the one truly BIG addition in this release is the new upload options. This will eliminate an *enormous* number of re-uploads, as well as the constant influx of confused questions in the Help Forums, from users who didn't even know that an anamorphic PAR existed, much less what it is and how to change it. This has been very much needed.
All of the new additions/updates are nice, but now my videos play sluggishly in full screen. Blast. Change it back!

I like the resizing feature, but it is rather low quality, It is easily noticed for me that the quality gets bad, maybe make a better way to stretch the video for minimal quality loss?
Videos won't load. The status bar shows "transferring data from s.ytimg.com...." and then hangs there.

I think it's super awesome the way you mete out the invitations to the beta YouTube Real Time. Having friends send them to eachother is awesome.
Ever since the update I've been having problems with my inbox. It keeps showing I have new comments to my videos even after I read them. Also deleting messages or ignoring new friend requests don't appear to take effect until the page is refreshed.
There are javascript errors that occur when using the inbox like this one:

I'm using IE8 on Windows XP SP3. Firefox doesn't seem to have this problem.
Yeah, the messages are a bit strange, mine doesn't delete messages after I read them. So now I have a pile of about 35 "unread" messages and I expect it will get much larger.
I cannot get into my playlists right now, and can't watch a single video. I updated my adobe flash player, just in case.

Please add a "replace video" option for users. I really don't appreciate having to re-upload older videos which as a result of some site update are now in horrible quality.

Somethings not right with the Inbox. Before when you log in it would show that you have 3 personel messages, 2 comments, 1 friend invite, etc. Once you clicked on each of those messages it would transfer them to as being read or opened. But now they just continue to be listed as new and unread messages in their original unread state. What gives?
I like the time line flag thingy, and it seems to be easier to place the flag than it used to be dragging the dot. Well done :-)
But Will some one please fix the comment options to be sticky!? I am fed up having to set to "See all comments" every time I log in. It used to stay from session to session until you changed the option box :-(

Good job with the full screen player. The only thing wrong with it was that the bottom bar was too big. Now you have fixed that and made it less eye catching. Perhaps an option to like invert the bottom bar so its darker when in full screen?

I like these sensible changes.
Just tried to check the TV and movie content, and none of it works for me... basically, nothing that uses the new bigger player works, and there isn't any help documentation on what the differences are, but old normal youtube videos still work. Uninstalled and installed the latest version of Flash, turned off adblocker (that gets the commercial before the video working, but the video still won't play). Very strange. Just noticed the same thing a couple days ago with hulu, which used to work.
Oh well, netflix instant viewing still works!
Who the fuck is so stupid that they need translation of Youtube??? Are you insane? it just creates problems!! Because of it I cant watch any videos because its "not available in your country". You suck
Why don't you put updates to rest for a while and actually work on some of these bugs and glitches all of these updates create for the rest of the site? Like choppy video quality after watching for just a few seconds, or the constant JavaScript/Flash player error messages, etc?

Suggestion: I would like the ability of a user to change his or her YouTube username rather than creating a new account. My account is over 2 years old and I don't want start over. The name I chose when I opened the account no longer reflects my content. I suggest that all users have the ability to change usernames. However, I suggest that users can only change their username once per account. Then those who are friends and subscribers to that user will receive an automated message notifying of the username change. After a few months, the old username becomes available to new users.
I would like to suggest a new YouTube feature: YouTube Basic and YouTube Premium.
Every user who are not partners, will have a YouTube Basic account. Users would have the option of purchasing a YouTube Premium membership, which can be renewed monthly or yearly. Users with a YouTube Premium account would be able to add banners to their channel, upload videos that are more than 10 minutes, and more.
Movie 3891, fuck you. The great thing about youtube is that it's free. Adding the premium account feature will only drive people away.
i think the idea of being able to change your username is spot-on. i can't even tell you many times i wished to change my username, i still do. i think this is absolutely something to take into consideration, as im sure a lot of user would agree with this. also, love the updates, every week there's something new to tinker with.

I like the updates but my ibox is playing up and it dose not mark any comments or PM's as read and they just stay as not read and i have to delite them to get them away. Is there any news on this and will it be fixed as it is very anouting.
I hope YouTube doesn't go the way movie3891 has suggested (basic and premium accounts) because I think its brilliant as it is. However, you don't make money by giving stuff away for free, so I doubt it will remain this way indefinitely.

I think 10 minutes is a reasonable length. It's not too much trouble to tie them all together as a playlist and it encourages videos to be brief.. Good.
I really like the new feature telling you what point in time you're at in the video. AND I LOVE the fact movies and shows are getting added, monstrous.

WHY does the video-length bar at the bottom of the screen dissapear now? its so annoying, when i want to pause the video at a specific spot, the bar keeps dissapearing and i can't pause it.
and if it's going to dissapear ANYWAY, then WHY THE HELL is it so SMALL?? i need to get my face 2 inches away from the screen to read the damn thing!
I really like how the timebar disappears during the full screen playing of a video now, but may I make one suggestion/request? If you leave your mouse down at the bottom over where the bar should be, don't make it disappear. That way if you want to pause it at a certain point you don't have to keep moving the mouse around until you get there, but during normal playback you can see just the video full screen.
Also there looks like there is a bug with invideo ads when the timebar is visible fullscreen. The ad is cut off by the timebar, so for example if you go to click on it its half cut off.
Again though, really really love that the bar goes away, but you might want to take those two things into consideration.

I like the new features. They help create the sites user interface a easier place to navigate :) I still think the main youtube page should be modified but that is just my opinion :)
One thing can you guys fix the glitch with partner icons on their channel page and adding an icon to a video? Sometimes my channel icon changes to my last video when its uploaded. I have it set not to do that. I have had major problems getting the video image icon to upload for a video. Just a few thoughts and thanks for all your hard work !

Inboxes need to be fixed... when I click on comments/messages to read them and then go to the next one, the first one goes back to bold, like it's still unread.

I want my inbox problem fixed. Like many other people here I read my messages, comments, etc and they grey out then when I come back to them they are back to bold again and the numbers not gone away.
Also I would like all those videos that say "Not available in your country" to be available. I thought You Tube videos were meant for viewing worldwide. Why have some videos got that? when I have asked the user they don't know why it has that message come up, so it is not the user doing it!

One thing I think you should add to the settings of your account menu is.
In the playback settings you can choose "I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it's available." which is great and works fine but i would like the same option for HD videos :)

Can you please add the function when you reply to somebody's comment., you automatically put the name of the person you are replying to in the comment like : "@janedow" or "janedoe <---" or "janedoe," I think it will stop alot of misunderstanding on Youtube.

Hi, I have noticed a really annoying phenomenon the last month that's really is destroying Youtube for me. And that is when people use misleading titles to get allot of "hits" and the clip end up being a "picture slide show". My suggestion is that you introduce a "tag" of some kind named "Slide show". Uploaders and users can tag these "fake clips" with this and then u can user-filter off all slide show. This would be really helpful for me (and millions of others I’m sure). Thanks!

I would like to second this request. It is something that has always been an issue, especially with the quality updates in the last 6 months. The older videos, which were uploaded to the specifications set in the YT recommendations at the time, really need updating!

About the tooltip...
Now, when sharing a video with friends i.e. on FB, I want to have made my social contribution accessible before hand - without the need for any instructions.
Idea goes here:
Could there be a way to share just a portion of a video?
1. Small button in the flash (?) to put the clip in "edit time markers" mode.
2. Edit the clip as your version
3. a) AJAX to trim the URL and EMBED on the fly
3. b) Share video or your version?
3. c) Save version to your profile
And then I would not have to remember "at two minutes" for sharing it later. I have that portion of the video saved, tagged and titled on my profile. And... could this make some more people register on YouTube? "Register to edit markers and save to profile".
Could be a nifty little "micro blogging" feature. Views? Message me whoever you are :D

hi i found a glitch i think its about comments i know that if a comment have 6 thumbs down it cannot be seen anymore but if you press the reply button you can see the bad comments is this a glitch or not???

Your copyright infringement crap pisses me off! How the hell is it copyright infringement if I'm not making any money off of it? I tried to upload ONE clip from a movie that's no longer being sold and it got removed because of copyright...Freakin selfish rich idiots who can't share their material need to freakin chill out. I need help! My unread messages, comments and shared with you messages are continuing to unread. I can't get them to be read no matter how many times I look at them. hey 1234..... you can download using a real media play, you just have to convert to flash video..easy really.. I am sure your can find a tutorial in the youtube.com/help section
Site error: Went to share a vid off of my "new.0" YT page and came up with "Previous Vid" on the "Share to facebook:" button.
How do we actually use the tags for videos on the you tube page. I see how it could go with an embedded player, but on the site? My guess is GET vars on the URL, but is that right?
I also am impressed with the new tooltip. Sometimes with music I am trying to re-hear a specific chord sequence and this is quite helpful. Thank U!

I think the site has been very slow for a while. The homepage seems to load after 'only' a few seconds, but search was down for a good long time today.
