YouTube Goes Offline
We are always looking for ways to make it easier for you to find, watch, and share videos. Many of you have told us that you wanted to take your favorite videos offline. So we've started working with a few partners who want their videos shared universally and even enjoyed away from an Internet connection.
Many video creators on YouTube want their work to be seen far and wide. They don't mind sharing their work, provided that they get the proper credit. Using Creative Commons licenses, we're giving our partners and community more choices to make that happen. Creative Commons licenses permit people to reuse downloaded content under certain conditions.
We're also testing an option that gives video owners the ability to permit downloading of their videos from YouTube. Partners could choose to offer their video downloads for free or for a small fee paid through Google Checkout. Partners can set prices and decide which license they want to attach to the downloaded video files (for more info on the types of licenses, take a look here).
For example, universities use YouTube to share lectures and research with an ever-expanding audience. In an effort to promote the sharing of information, we are testing free downloads of YouTube videos from Stanford, Duke, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCTV (broadcasting programs from throughout the UC system). YouTube users who are traveling or teachers who want to show these videos in classrooms with limited or no connectivity should find this particularly useful.
A small number of other YouTube partners, including khanacademy, householdhacker and pogobat, are also participating in this test as an additional distribution and revenue-generating tool.
So how do these downloads work? The video watch pages of the participating partners link to the download option below the left-hand corner of the video. To help you keep track of the videos you have previously purchased, we have created a new "My Purchases" tab under "My Videos."

Awesome. Would have no use for the average vlog, but for music videos, short films and other artistic works this will be great.

Hey... wait a second... Here's an idea. Make it so that the pay-for-download video is of a higher quality than what you can see online. That would make it more monitarily viable to implement. But still, the Creative Commons license is a *GREAT* idea, since now there are less legal barriers to the mixing of the video content.
Congratulations!, integrating Creative Common licensing options will no only provide a wider exposure platform to new and independent creators, but it is also a great example to big companies on how the new intellectual property methods, uses and benefits could mean for they´re dying business based on licensing, licenseing, licensing.

It would be a waste adding those functions if there is software out there like Vixy, keepvid and Firefox's DownloadHelper, thet can easily download these videos without paying.

Please don't limit this feature to partners and US residents, I am a Brazilian with lots of video content to share and I am waiting for ages for Youtube to give me some Flickr-like license chooser, I want to be able to flag it cc-by or even cc-zero in a standard way that can be recognized by machines and search engines, writing on the video's description or including the text in the video itself is not enough for people like me :)

Tons of people already use external sites and the "Temporary Files" folder on their computers to download YT videos for free anyway. Then again, the majority of the YT community prob'ly doesn't know how to, so....yeah.

What is this? As far as I read, your just talking about what you have done with the videos on youtube and what the people can do with them. One thing though, why would you close down Youtube?! I know, I know. People will be telling me all about this whole thing or what not. I don't now a lot about his, so could you actualy tell us something about that?!
I think it's not a matter if advanced users can download videos from youtube via a hack/program/app/temp files.
The real importance resides in the sole attempt to provide new ways and more tools to share and create new content and share it again. For this I salute the strategy.
This is not revolutionary. I had the ability to download youtube videos for YEARS via a greasmonkey extension.

Great Business model!
I have recently started putting CC bumbers onto my videos - I think it would be nice if YouTube would allow YouTubers the option of choosing CC licenses and having that license information automatically show in the video information, even if they are not subject to fee based downloading. I do this manually, but having it as automatic is a nice way to spread the word on creative commons and raise awareness, and proactive participation.
Also, I wish that Google would look at forming tie-ups with sites like Magnatune and Jamendo to encourage artists to use those sites, and to point out that there is plenty of music availbe there under licenses that permit video based derivative works of music on the site.

I think this is great! video producers like myself will now be able to earn some cash, which in turn, will help us make more videos for others to see. It is a win-win situation. I attended the youtube video production meeting at the sears office with mike and steven in irvine. we met with the sears attorney and discussed media law. Steven helped us to use the internet for legal marketing
I applaud this effort People who point out that there are ways around this fail to understand that this at least allows offers artists to make money in some fashion. There will be some who support the community because its the right thing to do, and that incremental advantage is more important than the people who continue to rip artists work despite this initiative. First all you did was delete them, but let his channel stay up for weeks. Then he added more videos, now you deleted the account. But have you taken any ethical and moral obligation to give a copy of those videos to the authorities? Please get your priorities straight because you are no longer the only hat in town and there are other video sites who have far better customer service and faster ban fingers when it comes to this kind of stuff.

I like this, though I want to get into the content id program moreso. I like this as it would make it easier for me to allow people to get my content and use it in theirs and - assuming I can get into content id - display my ads.

When this goes public, I wonder how many would institute a "fair use" or "fair dealing" system by allowing downloading for personal use (no CC license) but disabling embedding? It actually makes much more sense than allowing embedding but not downloading.

I agree with alexandgruntz. Videos should be free. Besides it would be preetty easier to copy the videos without paying anything. There are hundreds of "courses" online to do it. There are people who can invade your account in the bank for christ sake. Pay charge for videos? Make me laugh, haha. :D
Another thing about Youtube. How's the Unknown Error going? If you intend to go Offline you should fix the Unknow Error first. This is becoming a serious problem because half of the users are going to other sites because the audio of many videos are being disabled without concrete explanations and the other half is pretty angry because they can't upload the videos because The Unknow Error. This site is amazing. We can meet people from everywhere and watch many different kinds of videos but if you guys destroy what people are trying to do come on. Everybody can make a homepage and post whatever they want. It is preety easy to make a NEW YOUTUBE in a WEEK! I think you should fix this error. This "Unknow Error" is the biggest problem of the site I think. Hope the things get better. Everybody would become more happy. :)
Hahaha...How many people here is taking more than hour to process your videos? 1:27 min and still running!!!!! And the video is not proceed yet. The video only has 30 Mega Bytes. My school system is blocking youtube!!! I have videos that I want to show my students. For example: How to make recycled paper... beekeeping etc. All of these wonderful resources I would like to share and they are blocked!!! I need to be able to download the videos so that I can burn them to a CD and play them for my students. ! I wish you would include and educator's provision.

I am a teacher, and was a user of some of the youtube videos.
Its extremely unfortunate that the save functionhas been removed, as many classrooms we use, do not have internet access, effectively meaning a savable download is required to take to the classroom
Whilst I will always support commercial enterprise, the majority of these videos were made free, for free public distribution, its unfortunate that Google is once again trying to use this as a revenue generating situation (which is fine if you are saving feature films or mainstream musical artisits, HOWever if it is not mainstream, then why not keep it free, after all, who benefits...Youtube (google) as in my case more and more students see the usefullness of this kind of website

Whats the point in paying to download a video? Google has alot of money, and many wise users will not want to pay just to see a video offline. There are many sites that let you download videos, and they are all FREE. Users wont like having to pay now.

I noticed on 2 friends PC's that no adds came up when they played my videos. I am a partner and adds are supposed to play at bottom of video and to the right of player. Is there something blocking them in Microsofts new programs?
