A YouTube for All of Us

As a community, we have come to count on each other to be entertained, challenged, and moved by what we watch and share on YouTube. We've been thinking a lot lately about how to make the collective YouTube experience even better, particularly on our most visited pages. Our goal is to help ensure that you're viewing content that's relevant to you, and not inadvertently coming across content that isn't. Here are a few things we came up with:

Stricter standard for mature content - While videos featuring pornographic images or sex acts are always removed from the site when they're flagged, we're tightening the standard for what is considered "sexually suggestive." Videos with sexually suggestive (but not prohibited) content will be age-restricted, which means they'll be available only to viewers who are 18 or older. To learn more about what constitutes "sexually suggestive" content, click here.

Demotion of sexually suggestive content and profanity - Videos that are considered sexually suggestive, or that contain profanity, will be algorithmically demoted on our 'Most Viewed,' 'Top Favorited,' and other browse pages. The classification of these types of videos is based on a number of factors, including video content and descriptions. In testing, we've found that out of the thousands of videos on these pages, only several each day are automatically demoted for being too graphic or explicit. However, those videos are often the ones which end up being repeatedly flagged by the community as being inappropriate.

Improved thumbnails - To make sure your thumbnail represents your video, your choices will now be selected algorithmically. You'll still have three thumbnails to choose from, but they will no longer be auto-generated from the 25/50/75 points in the video index.

More accurate video information - Our Community Guidelines have always prohibited folks from attempting to game view counts by entering misleading information in video descriptions, tags, titles, and other metadata. We remain serious about enforcing these rules. Remember, violations of these guidelines could result in removal of your video and repeated violations will lead to termination of your account.

The preservation and improvement of the YouTube experience is a responsibility we share. Let's work together to ensure that the YouTube community continues to thrive as a positive place for all of us.

VenetianPrincess said...: I understand that you are trying to avoid situations where people abuse the system and game the thumbnails, however this new process is an extreme misfortune to partners. Thumbnails help us brand our content, just like a cover to a cd or DVD.

I have spoken to many other partners and all of us are very disappointed with this announcement. Many of us do vlogs or music videos, and we are more than likely going to end up with an unattractive thumbnail mid-sentence with the subject's mouth wide open, a goofy face, or motion blur that no one will want to click on.

Even with three options, that is simply not enough. Video thumbnails play a key-role in whether people choose to watch our videos or not. We as partners should have the right to ensure that our thumbnail image is interesting and choose what we want to creatively represent our content, as long as it goes with the video.

Many other video sharing platforms such as Revver and Vimeo offer at least 15 thumbnail options. Ifilm, Spike.com, and Vimeo even offer the ability to upload our own choice of thumbnail. Perhaps you might want to think about offering this as a feature exclusively to partners, so that we can still optimize branding. Even a slider that would allow us to pick any frame from the entire video would be very beneficial. I ask you to please consider these options. GaeriSummer said...: I think the community guidelines do not sufficiently cover the way misleading metadata is used to garner undeserved video views. The only point (spam) is far too vague and I would welcome more specific guidelines and penalties here.

On the other hand, randomising the thumbnail selection is a very good idea! Video thumbnails have become a major factor for users when choosing whether to view a video or not. The current system awarded manipulation or branding to misrepresent the actual video content. Even those of us not consciously manipulating their thumbnails nevertheless spend too much time and effort worrying about their video thumbnail. The new system is equally fair for all users and gets back to what really matters.
The only concession YouTube should consider is offering a selection of more than three thumbnails, but I would not treat that with the highest priority.

1. Flagged videos should also be removed from the related videos section of other videos. They were still posted there the last time I checked, and even if you never view the video, the thumbnail for these most of the time is inappropriate enough, and its hard to send videos to your family when that's on the side.

Where I understand it can be used to fish out all the videos that use fake thumbnail images, it can also be a huge disadvantage. If there is a lot of movement in the video, most of the images could be blurry. I also took advantage of the middle thumbnail to help brand my video as best as possible. I understand that it taken advantage of through the site, however, I think if you allowed the option to choose specifically which frame you'd like to represent your video to members of the partner program (as part of the "branding services") we shouldn't have a problem. As VenetianPrincess stated, the thumbnail is our "DVD cover" - with it a poor "cover" someone may not find the video interesting on first glance...

I agree that people are trying to take advantage of the image they select but I thought YouTube wants the videos watched so they can display ads? The almighty $ does rule the world. As for limiting "mature content", I do not like censorship and think that everyone should be allowed to express themselves how they see fit, HOWEVER I would like to see some sort of rating system put in place so we would know before we click on the video that it contains certain material. I didn't use to care, but now that I have a 3 year old that likes to repeat everything, I find myself having to use ear buds to watch certain videos while sitting in the living room out of fear "adult" language will be heard by young ears. I know that a lot of the partner content that I subscribe to is created by the young adult community and they probably don't always consider my point when making content. This is NOT an improvement on thumbnails - how is an algorithm supposed to represent our videos? Either stick with the 25/50/75 points which allow people to have some control, or allow it to be selected from any frame in the "edit" options.

Although I think it is a great idea to make "sexually suggestive" videos restrictive in response to protecting children and also just to acknowledge that these videos aren't actually inappropriate for the site, it doesn't make any sense to demote them. Just because a movie is rated R doesn't mean they promote it any less! It just means that underage persons can't watch it without consent. They are often still good videos and worthy of being on most watched/most commented/highest rated/etc. Probably many of them have been flagged because your previous guidelines about appropriate content were too broad.

And "we remain serious about enforcing [rules regarding descriptions, tags, titles, and other metadata]"? I've seen countless videos and continue to see more every day that take advantage of these features and nothing is ever done about them. While it can be used constructively and in some cases does appropriately embody the spirit of a video, the 25/50/75 choices were too often abused. Those who are sad to see their self-promotion or project promotion hindered need to adjust their method of communication. We all had to adjust our method of finding videos to watch when thumbnails became abused, and I'm very glad to see that put right. Thank you YouTube!

It was so awesome last year to see all those project for awesome thumbnails taking over YouTube. We had just started work on this year's when we heard the news, I really that there could be a temporary solution, so that we can be awesome again this year.

They also were a great way to guarantee that potential viewers would get a good idea of what the content is, as well as guarantee a visually appealing shot. I understand that some users did game the system with thumbnails, but a lot of good was done with the old system, as well. From something as small as jaaaaaaa's Build Me Up Buttercup, a surprise for her friend, which was disguised with a misleading thumbnail so the cat wouldn't be out of the bad, to the vlogbrothers's Project For Awesome, which brought attention to more than 200 charities though using the same thumbnail for every video in the project. Being able to choose our own thumbnails on YouTube is like free speech. We understand that some people have misused their privelages, but that will always happen, whatever rules are in place. The three pictures you get never really show what the video is about. What you are proposing is just going to make it worse. Why don't you just let people upload a .jpg for the thumbnail like on blip.tv? It works fine over there. Another commenter way down suggested a slider to pick a video frame. That sounds like a good idea too. This isn't rocket science. You don't always need to create an algorithm to solve a problem.

Also... Let me get this straight, you are going to forcibly demote certain videos in the popularity rankings based on content judgments? Isn't that an editorial "veto" against the actual popularity? This is a really bad idea. Either the ranking is based on content or it is based on popularity. It can't be both at the same time.

Giving us gifts wrapped in beautiful paper with bows and ribbons and tags that say "Tiffany & Co." does not change the fact that you keep giving us socks. If you want loyal viewers then make good videos consistently. Suggesting that the thumbnail is key to getting views is simply saying the gift isn't as good as the box.

If casual viewers are what you want, then I'm sorry for your loss of numbers, potential revenue, ability to attract random internet squirrels, and heart.

I don't have a problem with anyone making money. I have a problem with them doing it not by strong reputation but by blinky lights and deception.

Plus nobody wants a video of theirs being demoted or restricted because of a little swear word or something being suggestive.

I welcome the ability to improve control of what a search will call up. I don't want my daughters watching a bunch of porn just because so many of the adolescents out there want Youtube to be a porn site! It isn't the porn that I want to watch!
