New Beta Feature: Video Annotations

We're happy to announce a new way to add interactive commentary to your videos -- with Video Annotations. With this feature, you can add background information, create branching ("choose your own adventure" style) stories or add links to any YouTube video, channel, or search results page -- at any point in your video.

Uploaders have control over creating and editing an unlimited number of annotations on their videos. To start annotating, first make sure you have videos uploaded into your account. Log in, then go to view one of your videos. On the Video page, click the blue "Edit Annotations" button to the right of the video.

As you play your video, you can insert commentary by adding speech bubbles, notes and highlight boxes anywhere you want. You can also use the menu on the left to save a draft, delete commentary, edit start/stop times or add links to your annotations. Once you save the final version, click "Publish" to reveal your annotated video to other users. (Note: Video Annotations are shown by default, but the viewer can turn them off while watching a video through the "Menu" button on the bottom right of the video player).

Looking for some creative ways to use annotations? Check out these examples: a shell game, skydiving adventure and magic trick.

We're really looking forward to the endless ways you'll annotate your videos and will add more fun tools and features soon!

They can be helpful, at least they are not as worse as the BETA channell design. IT IS TERRIBLE

homininid said...

Annotations are dumb... it's now another way for spammers to get their shit across when us viewers want to be able to focus on the video at hand.

toptechnosongs said...

homininid, you can just remove annotations from the video - simple.

Hurricane23mph said...

wow that white bar at the bottom of my youtube page is really annoying any idea on how to remove it? Please let me know or shoot me a message. thanks

UnUnitedVegas said...

the annotations are very annoying ,
I find myself easily watching 50% less videos because of them

ProfessorPiano said...

I like them. They are quite useful. For example, if you have seen the Sasha Grey on the Tyra Banks show video, the annotations are very informative giving you great information!

benmusic89 said...

i think its aweful how some ppl over annotate. i keep my annotations on the side of the video for 5 secs each, at the begininng of the video..

StrawberryBuzz said...

I HATE the new youtube layout thing... how can i go back to the old one??????

wordupgun said...

Please make annotations 'off' as default, if people want them they can add them themselves, please don't force his annoying feature on everyone.

If they are on by default at last make it easy to turn them off in your account with one click of a button.

ReversePhoneLookup1 said...

wow..these video annotations are a huge feature!, Just wished you can customize them more. Like be able to emphasize words with bold, italics or colors within the annotations., etc

AgentAnimations said...

I agree with UnUnitedVegas

HowToGetGirlsNow said...

i think they are a pain in the butt...annoying!

autoinsurancequotes1 said...

they are not dumb.... they are a pretty good way to tell the story better... If you like them, then don't put them in your video

mariofan573 said...

You people commenting are idiots. There is an option to turn them off just go to the bottom right corner of the video there is an arrow.

ahanix1988 said...

Give me an option to only have the annotations editor show up when I say so, not automatically. Sometimes I want to watch videos I've uploaded myself, and it's annoying to constantly close the annotations editor. Also, give us the option to "Always show all comments", rather than defaulting to only good ones.

TiGa3hs said...

IT'S beatefoul

guaduser said...

Please provide an option to set to turn off annotations permanently. It is annoying when authors post annotations in the middle of the screen

Please allow a method to disable them.

I have no intention of using this at all and every time I watch one of my own videos the editor is active. I don't want it to be active.

Remember every time you use annotations God kills a kitten!!

powerfulSubtlety said...

I need an option on my account to disable annotations by default on videos. Stuff like this and the ads are really starting to negate the enjoy of using Youtube.

Any site does well when it's nearly effortless to use and has interesting content. By adding these unnecessary clicks to disable these annoyances, it's making the experience more frustrating.

How to disable annotations in embedded video?

xxxRozexxx said...

A truly disturbing feature that should not exist at all, really. Even a mentally incapacitated child can figure out how much they will be abused for advertising and alike. PLEASE make an option to permanently disable them.

No one likes having a video clogged with useless text messages.
Think if you watched a movie at a cinema, and suddenly a big white box appeared covering half the video, cause someone of those 400 ppl in the audience thought it was funny.

//Best regards from a really annoyed Youtube visitor.

frazzydee said...

wow this is the worst idea ever. Please give us an account option to disable.

the only reason I can think of for why they haven't done this already is because they're planning to monetize it. Fine but let us disable the annotations you don't make money off of, they are really irritating.

Letsplaythreadssuck said...

Get rid of this shit now fuckers

ValeoVisual said...

I agree! Ability to remove annotations from an embedded movie would would be very useful!

SHodges said...

There really needs to be a way to turn this off in videos I'm watching. YouTube is seriously being ruined. It's bad enough that 99% of the content is just a "music video" of an unaltered scene from a TV show with "Requiem For A Dream" slapped over top of it, but now there's this stuff too. Awful.

melted666 said...

Please disable annotations by default.

deadlove75 said...

Not only would I like a way to turn this off by default when I view my own videos (the crosshair thingy), but I would like a way to turn off all annotations on other people's videos. I have yet to see one that wasn't annoying. I know its use is up to the video creators, but it's annoying. Please keep it simple guys. You were doing so good. Now, this is just driving me nuts.

cfconsultancy said...

How in gods name can I PERMANENTLY turn the god awful annotations OFF....I am talking off in embeds, off when I stream off the site, EVERYTHING....They are so damn irritating and the only thing that they even do is advertise for you to subscribe or click for another video....GET RID OF THEM, or at least allow ME to get rid of them....Isn't the point of this to have it so that users can customize their youtube experience??? Seriously....fix this garbage you call annotations....

HenryBloggit said...

I hate annotations...they're ruining youtube. I can't believe you guys thought it would be a good idea to allow spam boxes inside of videos.

And the fact that your only method of turning them off requires two clicks per each and every video you watch is a slap in the face.

Sometimes now I find a cool video that I want to send to my friends, but it's got all those spam boxes all over it, so I don't send it on. There needs to be an ?annotations=no parameter in the URL so you can send a friend a link to a video without the spam.

Please re-think this awful annotations "feature" because it's so annoying and distracting that I'm re-thinking whether or not to continue visiting Youtube. People aren't using this feature to make youtube better, they're using it to advertise free ringtones and crappy myspace pages.

Whose idea was it to enable videos to be plastered with these incredibly annoying "popups"? This is such as "90s" idea - force as much information as possible on the user with absolutely no regard for their experience. Nice one, Youtube. The stupidest idea you've had yet.

The most frustrating part is it would be so incredibly easy for YouTube to implement a preference to turn these idiotic things off permanently - but no. Still nothing. Sigh.

But if you gonna stubbornly keep this shit around, then at least improve the look. Give them semi-transparent black backgrounds with white text and rounded corners, or something that looks better than the ugly grey gradient.

I had a video game avatar that I created that was of a sexual nature (while I realize now that this specifically violates youtube policy) I made sure that my post was not unique before posting.
I even FLAGGED it myself, because it is inappropriate for younger viewers.
I simply wanted it to be harder to reach as are the several SEX GUIDES that have been available long term.
Sex is sex people if it is inappropriate in one context (humor)it should be unavailable (educational) PERIOD.

anaissatin said...

Please let us turn off annotations when we want to embed other people's videos. Many people use YouTube as a source for serious things like campaign speeches, excerpts from documentary, cinema, etc. i.e. I don't want the unpleasant surprise when a video "owner" adds obscene or cheeky comments long after I've embedded their video, especially a video that's been embedded by a lot of people. Will I be able to disable annotations in embed code?

Me too, I'm from the old player on YouTube. The new one has some bugs - volume control don't dissapear (besides you wait 5 seconds), it cover the video and it's unpleasent. And also, with the old player we can pause the video before it starts, so it can buffer better.

I think the idea for annotiations is very cool. I like it! :-)

my feedback. .
i really dont dig the updated player. the previous one worked fine. beefing up the graphics just slows things down. as GEESUS494 put, i liked resizing, and stopping the player to check other things out. . the new volume control is too sensitive to clicks! then other times it wont go away. . a lot of the time you cant scroll back to a previous part of the clip, the AutoPlay thing for playlist needs to be constantly checked because at times it will not take the command that you stopped it from going to another clip.

nono..Only links from youtube domain youtube.com.. Script allow only the same domain. You can link to profile, searchresults ,other videos ,bla bla..

you edit the annotations and the text will be streamed with XML ( xml got the timelines and text )into the video as a layer

Please give us back the original player.

OR...

Add the "|<" button to the right of the Play button again. This means you can load a page then instantly click it so the video doesn't start, so you can check out another tab/video. Now you have to wait for it to load then click pause, then try and scroll back to the start again which rarely works in itself.

And give us back the volume slider docked, not in a pop-up. If you hold down your mouse-click on the slider it disappears after a few seconds. Not to mention it covers over the video.

Too many buttons will not scare people as your design team seems to think. Give people an ounce of respect.

This is what I want:

If used properly, it's a nice little feature. I hope no one goes annotation crazy!

Suggestions:

There should be an option to open in a new window instead of leaving the current video.

font size options would be nice.

great features..but please go back to the old video player (when we could resize the vids) - most videos that have been uploaded are so fuzzy u can't even see them anymore unless u upload it as high quality ones!

I don't know if I'll be using it... I have to see what comes up :P

Maybe I'll give it a try. Looks sorta nice that I can now put links in my video.

This is very interesting! I made a video using an old video of mine with it.

What about a feature to let other users to start a peer-production of international subtitles?

What if i would like French subtitles in my videos? I should upload it in Dotsub (an other videosharing website) and let other users collaborate to add subtitles in their language in my videos.

I know it's a lot of work for you, but this could be useful for instructional video. I would like people to add subtitles in MY videos in THEIR language. Moreover i would like to add italian subtitles in good english videos without uploading them in my channel (or in another website like dotsub).

I hate annotations. I'm really disappointed in what Google has done to YouTube.
