Dialogue with Sen. Lieberman on terrorism videos

Last week, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) contacted us to voice his concerns about seeing videos from several Islamic terrorist organizations on YouTube. We appreciated our dialogue with Senator Lieberman and his staff and wanted to explain to the YouTube community how we responded to his concerns.

First, some background: hundreds of thousands of videos are uploaded to YouTube every day. Because it is not possible to pre-screen this much content, we have developed an innovative and reliable community policing system that involves our users in helping us enforce YouTube's standards. Millions of users report potential violations of our Community Guidelines by selecting the "Flag" link while watching videos.

Senator Lieberman's staff identified numerous videos that they believed violated YouTube's Community Guidelines. In response to his concerns, we examined and ended up removing a number of videos from the site, primarily because they depicted gratuitous violence, advocated violence, or used hate speech. Most of the videos, which did not contain violent or hate speech content, were not removed because they do not violate our Community Guidelines.

Senator Lieberman stated his belief, in a letter sent today, that all videos mentioning or featuring these groups should be removed from YouTube -- even legal nonviolent or non-hate speech videos. While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds. Of course, users are always free to express their disagreement with a particular video on the site, by leaving comments or their own response video. That debate is healthy.

We appreciate Senator Lieberman alerting us to videos that violated our policies -- and encourage our users to continue to do the same through the flagging tool. And while we disagree with him about the details of our policies, we respect his views and thank him for giving us the chance to respond to his concerns.

Thank you, YouTube, for standing up to that neocon war-starter Senator Lieberman. If Lieberman wants to end terrorism, he needs to quit authorizing it

Lieberman is a sorry apologist for the Likud party. I think he's got his priorities mixed up. He's supposed to be representing the US, not Israel, not himself. Hope he loses all his positions on the various committees - he's just a neocon wannabe.

Lieberman's concerns are motivated more by fear than reason. If all it takes to turn a person into a terrorist or "extremist" is a persuasive video on the internet.. Then really, what hope is there for humanity? Compare that negligible risk to the overwhelmingly positive aspects of sites like YouTube, and the answer is obvious. Obvious to rational people anyway.

Freedom of expression is great and all, but we don't need to allow people who steal others freedoms to express themselves freely....thats a mouthful. What I'm sayin is, if someone is a terrorist then they are not allowing others to be free, so they in turn do not deserve to be free.

NEW REPORT CITES GROWING THREAT OF HOMEGROWN TERROR
Internet Acts as Catalyst to Radicalization; Counter Messaging Strategy Needed

Last fall, Defense Secretary Robert Gates bluntly observed, “We are miserable at communicating to the rest of the world what we are about as a society and a culture, about freedom and democracy, about our policies and our goals. It is just plain embarrassing that Al Qaeda is better at communicating its message on the Internet than America.”

Straight from the Homeland Security web sight. And these are the shits who control out destiny!? We are all over the fucking world supposedly liberating the ignorant masses so they can open a goddamn Walmart. But the dumb masses are in this country; eight years of terror alerts when in reality one should be more concerned with the risk of driving on the interstate.

The internet is a threat to the established entities of power and that is what concerns our so-called representatives. Our concern should be organizing a truly independent force to counter the established governmental structure because the modern American
government is simply a pseudo democracy controlled by elites. The mentality of people who arrogantly assume they have the god given right to impose their will on every nation of the world while crying about some lame brained jihad propaganda is fucking scary. One word, hypocrisy. If the jihad controlled the US then we would all be strapping on the bombs as well. Open your blinded eyes, you are simply a terrorist whenever you are not in power and you decide to revolt against that power; America was based on this revolt!

Fuck you and every stupid bastard that thinks you have some special American right to freedom. Ignorance of anything breeds prejudice of that thing. This country will see the worst carnage of all history because the masses are to fat and stupid to see the revolution rolling. Greed for Power is the only motive behind the controlling entities. The only way to direct a change away from these controlling entities is through force. So the homegrown terrorist they fear will not be the jihad anymore than it will be the American revolutionary. Our concern should be our governments agenda to make the revolutionary a legally defined terrorist. Wake up you dumb fucks, the momentum is building.

The fact that Lieberman wants to violate the first amendment (!) just proves that he's not an Independent, he's a Republican (sorry classic Republicans like Ron Paul, but you let this happen to your party and that is what Republicans are now). Anyone who votes for this fool in his reelection is not paying attention.

I certainly hope that this attempt of his to violate free speech, and on the Internet (even worse), is prominently featured when he runs for reelection!

Subject: STOP LIEBERMAN'S ATTACK ON FREE SPEECH AND PRESS!

Sen. Joe Lieberman wants to start regulating news content. I agree and I
understand that the terrorist videos are offensive, and are used as a
political device by those who author them, BUT, there are very good
reasons to not attempt to regulate the media.

1) Constitutional freedom of press. By passing regulations concerning
what type of information can be reported, we will be producing the same
kind of filtered and censored news content that we historically have
bashed China for.

2) Constitutional Freedom of speech. No one wants to hear about our right
to freedom of speech anymore, but its fact. We have this Constitutional
right.

3) I hate the terrorists as much as anyone does... but point blank, I
WANT to know what the other side is doing as much as I want to know what
our side is doing. Its information.

4) Why wouldnt you want the world to see the terrorists in all the
disgusting, lowlife, vulgar, stone-age, pathetic glory? Their videos show
them for what they are, and they help maintain support for the battles
against these people. I, for one, would have probably lost my support for
this ongoing ordeal in the middle east, except I had the opportunity to
see the other side for what they are.

5) And finally, if google/youtube doesnt allow them posted, or you get a
law against US-based sites hosting these videos, someone else will, and do
you know what that means? Someone in ANOTHER COUNTRY, AGAIN GETTING
bussiness, profit from something that USED to be American territory.
STOP forcing internet business overseas by trying to regulate US-based
content.

The United States government is going to have to learn to start trusting
the American people to decide for themselves. USA started trying to
legislate ethics with prohibition of perverse sexual acts, then alcohol,
then drugs, and historically each time, has been a complete failure, and
now some want to legislate what we are allowed to see and hear from around
the world! Please do not allow this to go any further.

northshore83: "It doesn't seem like any of those who are against censorship have anything to say regarding the terrorist videos themselves." - Answer: Because that’s irrelevant. Its not about the specific videos or agreeing or disagreeing with the content. The argument would have been the same no matter the beliefs or convictions expressed in the videos. You cannot pick and choose here. Youtube provides several ways one can respond to a video. Use those instead if you feel so strongly about certain videos.

movie1 said...

The strategy should not be to remove those videos - it should be to respond intelligently to them with enlightened videos........We cant hide from reality.

.....We need to be aware of the turmoil that portions of society faces that make them react this way - perhaps we can help them.....But hiding and closing our eyes is not the answer......Perhaps many tragedies from the past could have been avoided if we had allowed them to express themselves, then reacted in a persuasive manner with counter arguments.
........................

They will just find another outlet to express themselves, so we never get to the root of the problem.

It doesn't seem like any of those who are against censorship have anything to say regarding the terrorist videos themselves. They are passionate about the freedom of speech but are silent about the limits of terrorist activities. If our country has designated al-Qaeda a terrorist group then how much of a difference is there between permitting them to recruit on this privately owned forum and recruiting at a privately owned building? Would you object to the al-Qaeda representatives being prevented from staging a fundraiser or recruitment meeting in your home town? I'm not saying there is a simple way to filter those videos; it's just important to see them for what they are.

I consider Lieberman’s cheerleading for a war against Iran hate speech and advocating violence. So lets say its all in the eye of the beholder.

Secondly, censorship is something we associate with dictatorships, totalitarian and oppressive regimes. And for good reason. I understand it fits in Lieberman’s philosophy but it (censorship) conflicts with a healthy free society.

The call for censorship also displays disdain for the general public. A lack of trust for the peoples capability to make their own deductions and assessments.

Sen Lieberman is a habitual complainer. If the truth be known, YouTube which is owned by Google has been engaged in very damning discrimination in favor of Jews. Many videos that simply tell the truth have been censored due to the immense pressure Jews as a group could put on an organization. The Best example is a YouTube video where former Congressman Paul Findley discusses Israel's control on American foreign policy was removed from YouTube and is now back with a note on the video stating that it was censored. Another best example is a YouTube video called. I read somewhere that when you attempt to prevent the truth from coming out, you only help in spreading it further. Lieberman a very dedicated and emotional Zionist Jew would rather see the entire Internet go away. Via the Internet, average folks such as myself are now able to opine where others could have access to it. Lieberman would rather keep the status quo where the media is owned by Jews almost in its entirety in most western countries, and via that most prized possession, the media are able to tilt public opinion in their favor. People of integrity and conscience need to rise up and tell the Lieberman's that they had a free and unfettered ride on dispenses misinformation for decades. Perhaps due to the blessed Internet, our turn has arrived to balance the lies with truth

Lieberman is entitled to follow the Torah or whatever he wants, of course, but he shouldn’t be entitled to use the Bill of Rights as toilet paper while he tries to foment religious wars around the world.

So I take it that videos like this are appropriate?

Didn't know that videotaped killing/the glorification thereof was considered protected speech.

As others have rightly pointed out, Lieberman is a warmonger who doesn't mind a million dead Iraqis, and would love to start a war against Iran for the benefit, I suppose, of the Israelis.

A petty little man, doing petty little things in a petty little way. YouTube does not have to be a partner, willing or not, in Sen. Lieberman's fight for relavance in a world that leaves him farther behind every day.

The man lost the ability to dance with the one's what brung him a long time ago. YouTube does not have to dance with him. He, and his chief of staff, Dan Gerstner, are only looking for a few cheap headines. Going after content on YouTube is their strategy. Don't be a part of their cheap and shoddy brand of politics.

It's interesting to me that youtube has decided remove these videos when there has been considerable press on anti-Islamic films being present on youtube and there has not been any effort to remove them, despite the fact they contain "hate speech". My prime example is he Geert Wilders film "Fitna" which is available on youtube right now which has both received a great deal of press and outrage from Muslims across the world. This film is chock full of anti-Islamic hate speech and yet because it agrees with the Western mentality of labeling Muslims as terrorists, it persists on youtube. While my personal belief is that youtube should not remove Islamic terrorist organization videos or "Fitna" just based on the fact they contain hate speech because it threatens the free exchange of ideas, I would appreciate it if youtube was consistent in their censorship philosophies. I would hope that youtube and google don't favor the opinions of a US senator over its users who have made it what it is today.

Today, most mainstream media propagate biased reporting. Therefore increasing number of people have stopped watching mainstream news and turn to Youtube to receive unbiased reporting. If Youtube begins censoring and gives into the pressure exerted by a war-hungry US senator then I guarantee that just like the mainstream media, people will turn their back on Youtube and find another video website which promotes free speech. The term ‘terrorism’ has become so vague that any ideology that is not in agreement with the Neo-con or Zionist principles is labeled terrorism. Youtube let the people decide if a video is inappropriate and not the government.

“It is a paradox that every dictator has climbed to power on the ladder of free speech. Immediately on attaining power each dictator has suppressed all free speech except his own.” -Herbert Hoover
