Site Update 12/12

Check out the latest updates made to YouTube during the wee hours. This list is jam-packed with greatness and some improvements that many of you have been requesting. Enjoy!

NEW VIDEOS TAB

We've merged the Categories and Video browse pages into one new, easier-to-navigate home for video search. All the old search options can be found there, along with a new "Spotlight" section that allows you to scroll through featured videos. You'll find some design improvements on the Channels and Community tabs as well.

MOST ACTIVE & PREVIOUSLY POPULAR

The Videos tab now includes two new viewing options. Click "Most Active Today" and you'll see the current day's most buzz-worthy titles, which can then be filtered by category. Click "Previously Popular" to find the most-viewed videos from one week ago or one month ago.

CHANNEL RESULTS IN SEARCH

YouTube search results now include videos and channels, making it easier for you to access the content you're looking for. When you enter a search term, highly relevant channels may be displayed at the top of the results page.

MUSIC SUBCATEGORIES

Our Music section is now broken down into genres such as Rock, Pop, Rap & Hip-Hop, Classical, and more. This will make it easier to find and promote all sorts of music videos on the site.

RSS LINKS ON VIDEO BROWSE PAGES

To stay up to date on the searches you check frequently, subscribe to our video browse pages by clicking the RSS link located beneath the categories list.

PROFILE PICTURE

You can choose any image you want to represent your channel, instead of a video still. Just click the "Upload an image" option on your Account page.

SUBSCRIPTIONS UPDATE

Closed and suspended accounts will now be automatically removed from your subscriptions. If you were subscribed to several closed/suspended accounts, you will notice a one-time large drop in numbers as your list is updated.

COMMENTS VOTING OPTIONAL

Now you can choose whether or not you want to allow users to vote on comments made on your videos (thumbs-up/thumbs-down feature). You can select this under a new "Comment Voting" section for both Upload and Edit Video and sharing options.

When I was looking over the 'Edit Channel > Edit Personal Info page' where I can change my profile picture, I entered information into the favorite movie box, then scrolled down and hit the update button at the BOTTOM and it just stayed on that page its not functioning, SO I went to the top of the page, and hit the update button there and when it said it successfully submitted all the fields were cleared. Looks like a database glitch with the fields, and the button should be easy to fix.

Also, please increase the commenting limit from 300 to ITS REAL 500 characters. Now with the commenting spam control this will be easy to block unwanted "long comments" so now 500 will be great, we no longer have to worry about bad comments because we the users will take care of any long unwanted message, and this have been proven over and over, so 500 now would fantastic. Thank you so much. About the rest of the design, I like it, isn't that perfect but I think you have your reasons to change it. Thank you YouTube. Oooh one more thing, our thumbnail picture in the video page is too small, and the real image is croped, mutilated, mistreated, besides that it shows a blank space next to it. It's tooo small, it doesn't look good, looks terrible, horrible.

First, i don't like the shortened version of the account part of the messages, where before you were able to press directly where you want to go (New comments, friend invites, received videos...) and the actual version where all the options are in 1, so you have to enter there, and then go to the section you want (like in my case, new comments), that is kind of annoying.
Second, i want to know why if there are people that can upload videos like of 50 minutes (because they got a director account before the changes) why we the "new users" (i have like more than 1 year here) can't do that, if that "more than 10 minutes videos" don't do anything to the server you host our videos, why we can't then upload longer videos. I saw the option of videos larger than 100mb, but you still force as to that 10 minutes rules, i can't undestand that.

And well, i like the new feature for the icon and all that, but i won't let my arms down until i get a logic explanation of that thingy of the 10 minutes XD; December 14, 2007 8:20 PM

for example, there are 2 years, CBCtv and CBC. you go to CBC's channel then go to one of the videos, click on the CBC link and it goes to CBCtv's channel instead of CBC's. please bring back the /user/ part in links to channels, thanks.; December 15, 2007 1:21 AM

But there are two things I have to complain of:
1. I can't update my personal info. It just disappears after I clicked on the update button. Plese fix that.
2. Why did you shorten the video titles in the video overview? I have many videos with the same title beginning. Now they look all like the same. That's not quite nice to watch.

I upload an image it's all ok... but:
First Name, Last Name, Gender, Relationship Status, About Me and Website URL
are deleted!
and if you re-try to insert the information and click on upload channel, anyway there isn't a change. i try it 10 times.

WHATTHEBUCKSHOW said...: I am not crazy abou the DROP DOWNS to get to the Most Discussed, Top Rated categories. I am sure I will get used to it but I am not liking it right now. I liked that it was automatically there on the left before. Seemed like more videos would be seen that way. I am less likely to check out the different things now. Also, there is a glich,when you list the top channels of the week- like when it says comedians- on that page it says the TOTAL PROFILE VIEWS EVER and not the hits for the week like it is supposed to. Nobody knows why she was suspended. She was one of the few black artists that had made it to the Top of the Most Subscribed musician list. For me, yt's latest changes have the effect of forcing me to view thumbs I don't want to see. I hang out on the very random "most recents" pages banging through vids whose thumbs look promising. Now, the top of each page rotates through thumbs of what yt's programmers want me to see. It doesn't help that as the thumbs at the top of the page rotate, everything below bounces up and down.

While I'm at it, could someone at yt please email me why "most recents" are limited to only five pages. I like to get a global zeitgeist and the more pages of "most recents" thumbs I can see the better. There used to be 15 pages. Trust me, the five pages don't refresh fast enough so that I can workaround by starting again at page one after I've finished viewing all the interesting-looking vids on page five.

I'll conclude with a comment about yt's flag system. At 15,000+ vids viewed I've done more than my share of flagging. Unfortunately, your latest refinements make it a chore to flag offensive vids. If a vid has hateful or abusive content I am obliged to scroll through three (!) drop down menus before I can flag it. That is in addition to being exposed to the poster's sickness in the first place. I'm at the point where I no longer flag a vid whose thumbs make it obvious the content is sexually explicit because I have to watch the vid first. It used to be a fair trade to spend some of my time flagging in return for access to posters' vids. That's no longer the case.; December 15, 2007 8:46 AM

These are impressive additions

Good idea personalizing it even more by allowing users to upload their own images, and allowing more customization is always welcomed for the more techminded

BTW:
Would like your reaction to that very controversial post on TechCrunch about PR firms specializing in YouTube video promotion.

100,000 views guaranteed! Before that interview, there was a gut feeling that some of those popular videos were NOT really able to make it by themselves. They were okay - but certainly not worth millions of views in such a short time.

This may soon get out of hand and damage the credibility of the popular rankings

Youtube should automatically log you out your account unless you specific not to do it when you leave the site. It should also ask you for your password and do capcha if you want to close your account or remove a video since now these video can be monetized. The spotlight feature is mildly annoying. The listing itself looks crammed, and the abbreviated video names are confusing. Like florian116 above, I would love if you returned the fifteen pages of the Most Recent list. It's the single most interesting feature of this site. [2] The ''Previously Popular'' thing is a grand idea, and may have a beneficial impact on the culture of this site. Thank you for that beautiful feature! [3] The music subcategories are a blessing. Thank you. [4] Uploading a profile icon is something that countless people have asked about for months and months – I don't know if I need it, but I applaud you for implementing it. [5] Does the subscriptions cleanup also extend to subscribers? It would be interesting to see how this would reshuffle the Most Subscribed list. [6] Making the abysmal comment rating feature optional is the best of your recent updates. I hope that many of the countless people who complained when it was introduced will show their appreciation by actually switching it off. Problem: When I was looking over the 'Edit Channel > Edit Personal Info page' where I can change my profile picture, I entered information into the favorite movie box, then scrolled down and hit the update button at the BOTTOM and it just stayed on that page its not functioning, SO I went to the top of the page, and hit the update button there and when it said it successfully submitted all the fields were cleared. Looks like a database glitch with the fields, and the button should be easy to fix. Hope this helps :D

There is a bug in: "PROFILE PICTURE You can choose any image you want to represent your channel, instead of a video still. Just click the "Upload an image" option on your Account page." In this section "Personal Profile" I upload an image it's all ok... but: First Name, Last Name, Gender, Relationship Status, About Me and Website URL are deleted! and if you re-try to insert the information and click on upload channel, anyway there isn't a change. i try it 10 times. Unless you know where to look now it is really hard to find the other sections, and casual browsers on youtube will never know where to look!
