New! Related Videos Appearing on Embeds

Does watching a YouTube video on another site leave you hungering for more like it? We just turned on a new embedded player with a scroll-through feature that shows related videos to your embeds. It's fun to play with and lets you discover new, related videos without leaving your site. Just hover over the video after pressing "play" and watch the magic unfold...

If for any reason you don't want this option turned on, you can modify the video URL by attaching a rel=0 parameter to the video. i.e. http://www.youtube.com/v/&rel=0

Here is an example of code with the parameter in place:

Enjoy!

I think it's not a good idea, if you embedded a video it's because you want to watch just that video, and also makes the transfer slower. I can't turn it off, please tell me how to do it. i.e. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeVc8xDOxc0&

this is a bad thing. i dont like it. i embed vids into my blog and i like how they were. livevideo does this too and i think its the most annoying thing ever, for if you accidently move your mouse over, it wont go away until like 10 secs later.

I suggest you put the default version of the videos with the option turned off.
If for any bizarre reason anyone would want this option turned on, he or she could modify the video URL by attaching a rel=1 parameter to the video. i.e. http://www.youtube.com/v/&rel=1.

Wonderful, great idea.
But I think you must switch the default: if you want to learn from your friend Bill, when he add an extra parameter in an API windows function, the default will work as in the past, nothing change.
And to activate the new stuff, I "can modify the video URL by attaching a rel=1 parameter to the videovideo"

I was watching the Pong vid, and it turned into some Transformers related vid. That's not the fault of the new feature, but I did not even select the video that it changed to. And I'm guessing that the number of related videos is limited to `0 videos plus the current one?

KOHPelord said...

Sorry, that number was supposed to be a '10'.

And now I noticed that the 'share' option is replaced by a 'menu' option, with 'URL' and 'EMBED' options. Why can't all three options be used at once?

maelindj said...

TERRIBLE IDEA! This should NEVER have been made default. A video of my infant daughter wound up having an inappropriate video showing up as being "related" and subsequently could be played on MY website. I don't want that!!!

This will go down as one of your greatest bone-headed mistakes.

egorbachev said...

I hate it.

AlaskaRobotics said...

That's kind of a pain in the butt. Can you make it a per video option in my account or have it be opt in rather than opt out? I don't like having other videos playing on my site and now I have to go through the whole thing and edit the embed code for every video.

AlaskaRobotics said...

Looks like mostly negative responses here.

This is a truly AWFUL feature for your default settings. Please reconsider this... At least allow this feature to be disabled when embedding videos. We will no longer embed any YouTube videos on our blog because of this.

I REALLY, really like your new player. However, I can see how some people might not. You could make "the default" for new embeds have the capability by giving the embed code copied from your site (or the new player) NOT "rel=0," but have the player play no parm embeds the old way, as "rel=0".

However, much I may have enjoyed finding out about it the way I did, other people (some who've already commented) won't.

The default is not good. I remember that in the past you made another mistake: when you changed the timer as countdown. After the innovation, all the blog posts that refers to the timer seems crazy. But nothing compared at today "improvement".

fizzypepsi said...

I don't like it. Even though there is an option to turn it off, not many people will know about it. AND what's the point? If I were "hungering for more," I could just do a related search. No big deal.

alfa1147 said...

Only to know (my last comment): in the future do you think you are going to embed something else in my embedded videos? I may suggest audio effects, preload advertsments, useful fadings.

mutantcircus said...

horrible, horrible idea.

Noobland2 said...

This is AWFUL!

It should NOT be set as the default!

I don't mind it if people attach the code at the end to get this feature, BUT DO NOT MAKE IT DEFAULT!

When I make a post on my site or blog about a video, I WANT THEM TO FOCUS ON MY VIDEO IM TALKING ABOUT!

Sure, I could just add the code to cancel it, but that's not the point. The majority of people who embed videos only want their viewers to focus on that particular video for discussion.

This also makes implimenting Youtube BBCodes and more on message boards difficult when trying to insert rel=0.

peerLAN said...

It's pretty bad and annoying. I hope you will remove it as default, I hate the way it takes up screen space. At best, you could make an additional button that shows similar videos, but as it is now it's terrible.

Noobland2 said...

And another thing, when I was trying to watch a video with this feature, I freaking lost it!

A menu popped up and I was trying to take it off so I could enjoy the video, but it started popping up other videos and making the video smaller... Seriously, WTF?

I liked Youtube's simplicity. This makes it difficult for anybody.

Instead of continuing with this horrible update, perhaps work on something that more people would enjoy... like an official Youtube toolbar or search engine addon for Firefox/IE browsers?

Quick question: What happened to the links above the advertisement video on the right side of the homepage? The ones that let you look at my videos, favorites, and other stuff. Did something happen during an upgrade? I'd like them back, please. :(

jack1969 said...

This is awful. You can't see the video at all and it completely ruins the experience.

Additionally, there are three other serious problems. First, it took me forever to figure out how to change the parameters (your instructions are terrible). Second, if I want to turn it off, I now how to go change the code of EVERY SINGLE VIDEO I have ever posted on my blog. (In addition to being a bad idea, this is just rude and thoughtless.) Third, people who aren't web/html saavy won't know how to change their parameters and are stuck with this feature against their will.

In short: I am now investigating changing to Google Video, and I suspect there will be a mass exodus from your site. This is a very VERY Bad idea (Don't you people do market research????)

I don't mind it so much, but I recommend that it disappear quicker (instantly) when your mouse leaves the window. Also, for it not to appear when you mouse over the play/pause or timeline slider bar, only to appear if you hold mouse over the main area for a moment.

Lilly50390 said...

This is quite annoying. It will take me ages to adjust the code on all of my embedded videos. Maybe you could try putting a small button at the bottom of the embedded video saying "click here to see related videos". That way anyone who was interested could click the button and it wouldn't inconvenience people who weren't interested.

I don't mind the feature, unlike many of the comments. I have two problems with it though. First, you need to make it easier to turn off, so I don't have to mess with code. i'm not a content creator, just a content watcher, and i cringe at the thought of having this thing pop up everywhere from now on.
this feature is 100% aimed at benefitting youtube and 0% aimed at benefitting users, and is therefore A BAD FEATURE.

prodhive said...

OK, I don't want to be just blindly hateful, but I have a few suggestions (i.e. things Youtube WILL do in the next couple days when they realize what a mistake they've made).

The play button and timeline bar! Good GOD. You know, if I back up a clip I'm watching, or replay it, I miss the bottom of the clip for the first five seconds. Sometimes important things happen in the first five seconds of a clip. Maybe for the body of the image, but not the freakin play button!

prodhive said...

Next, and I haven't seen this yet from these comments, but why not make the option viewer-controlled? You know, when watching it, you hit a button if you want to take it away. The poster should decide the default (which should probably be off, given how easy it is to have an inappropriate video show up), and then the viewer has the option to change the setting. Everyone wins, and this feature will survive if it has any redeeming value.

maybe you can have it pop up only when the video finishes playing?

prodhive said...

Oh, pardon me. If I move to the place in the clip I want to watch from, pause, hold my mouse over the play button for five seconds until the bar disappears, THEN press play, I can actually see the clip unobstructed. Thank you for including that completely user-friendly and thoughtful back-door that allows users to hack into the intended purpose of an embedded video. Oops, that was more hateful than critically constructive! My bad.

prodhive said...

Actually, I changed my mind. I love this feature so much, I think Youtube should do this for their main site. Why stop with embedded videos? C'mon, Youtube, I'm a young American. I have no patience! I can't wait until a clip is over to see other relevant videos! I want to hover my mouse over videos on the main site and have access to other videos NOW NOW NOW.

zufallsfaktor said...

Sorry, but I tink it's terrible. It is disturbing and covers the picture, if one comes inadvertently over the player.

prodhive said...

"Just hover over the video after pressing "play" and watch the magic unfold... "

Yes, it's so magical that the next time I post a video, I'm going to establish a website where I will embed that video, and then direct people in my video description to that site, so that they can watch it and have access to other videos without having to wait for it to end and/or fully load. Youtube seriously needs to incorporate this feature anywhere and everywhere immediately.

NoPlaceToRest said...

Wow, so many negative voices! I think we need to keep in mind that embedding is a feature that gains YT next to nothing; it's only good for raising brand awareness (but most people who watch streaming video probably know YT by now) and for getting people to click through to YT proper. This will change once every video has an ad attached to the end of it (or maybe there will be paid business accounts that will allow for more control), but for now, it seems only logical that YT tries to find ways to get more people to click through – and the more time visitors spend with the embedded player, the more likely are they to visit the site. If you don't like it, you have three options: 1) Use the parameter provided. 2) Link to the video instead of embedding it. With preview pic URLs having become unified last month, it's easy to create attractive links. 3) Host your own videos on your own site.

That said, I wonder what the implications are if the embedded player without your being aware of it serves a video that has been uploaded to YT illegitimately. With all those crazy national copyright regulations, this could lead to strange problems. But then again, maybe the AudibleMagic filters will solve that problem for us. Hovering over the control bar (and even five pixels below it) shouldn't bring up the related videos, but I'm sure they will change that in time.

cybafaeries said...

I think it's great!!! Very slick. I embed all my vids on my blog and it's an excellent addition. Just keep your hand off the mouse when the vids playing! What's the problem?? What are you doing playing with the mouse when the vids playing anyhow?

dthedrummer said...

This is incredibly INCREDIBLY annoying. It covers up and distracts from the video, takes WAY too long to disappear and reappears every time I move my mouse. Not only that, but it has already TWICE caused my computer to freeze to the point where it didn't even respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL, and I had to shut down using the power button. That's a pretty major problem. This new "feature" is terrible.

If they want to keep it around, with some needed tweaking, it still needs to be OFF by default. It is not obvious or user-friendly for people to turn off. Not to mention that every video that's previously been embedded now has this, since it is the default. There should also be a global preference for the viewer (a user logged in) to turn this off automatically for every YouTube video they view.

YouTube, like many others on the web, needs to realize that flashy does not equal user-friendly. This needs to get scrapped.

littledsoundlab said...

Sorry , but the "related" feature never worked nice in the first place. It distracts as hell and sometimes the "related" videos have nothing to do with the video loaded or are not for the audience intended.

Didn't YT had an older related feature at the end of the video what's wrong with that one?

Another solution (if YT likes it that much) would be to give users the power to manually decide +/- 10 related video's. Then it becomes a good tool and YT still have the traffic boost they want. win/win.

Example: what does an indie labels music video in their profile have to do with Paris hilton going to jail or with the latest burger king commercial? let the users/uploaders themselves decide what is relevant.

Keep up the good work YT! you guys still rock.. I'm just saying.

cheers.

YouTube,

Please make the new "related videos" feature an option rather than the default for your embedded videos. I consider this a slap in the face to all sites who have opted to embed your content. You either do not understand or perhaps you do not care what this "improvement" has done to the content of "family friendly" or special interest sites. I do know you will be adding commercials or ads to your videos eventually, and that I can understand... but this is no revenue stream for you, and is a serious breach of your own established "rules of the game". This one feature makes YouTube no longer trustworthy as a content provider... both to site owners AND to general users.

Yuck!!! This new feature sucks! Hella distracting like everyone said!

dickwank said...

If you've ever wanted to do this, you can click the embedded video, be taken to its Youtube page, and look at similar videos, every monkey that can manipulate a keyboard knows this. This is an example of Trying To Be Clever by adding superfluous and downright stupid features to something rather than improving upon it.

FInd the person that suggested this and dock them a week's wages for being a stupid invalid. The phrase "if it ain't broke" springs to mind, or even better, one I just came up with myself: "don't waste my time with annoying and futile new features that only serve to inhibit use".

Cheers.

Oh, look, refreshing the page adds a bonus comment. How super.

This is horrible, really ruins my blog, I have tried turning it off but it seems that WordPress fails to take in the rel=0 parameter, could someone please explain how to turn this off in WordPress, its awful and takes the attention away from what I have posted for my visitors.

Not very nice, very irritating, sorry.

Wolfman9999 said...

Well look likes its okay not bad.

designed4freedom said...

Honestly - cool idea in concept - but I would default to having it off and where you add a parameter to include it. Or perhaps it would be better if it didn't happen on mouse over. If I want to see the menu - I'll click it. That would work fine. Whatever you do - please change it so that it doesn't pop out on mouse over. Very often the "related" videos are not all that relevant either...
Thanks for the effort though!
Keep innovating.

readbx said...

Please! Don't make this 'on' by default-- just have an option for people who want it to turn it on. My site is, and must remain, totally family friendly, and frankly, most of the stuff on YouTube is not family friendly. Again, please make this feature an option, rather than the default! Thanks-

The embeded menu is quite nice, but there some things that must be corrected:

-The menu should disappear instantly.
-Whenever the mouse is around the play/pause button, the audio control, etc, the menu SHOULD NOT pop out, it's annoying when trying to watch a particular section of a video, and the menu covers 25% of it. The menu should appear, with a button, or a particular area of the video.

Please put a box on the upload page so we can decide whether we want to use this option or not. We should not have to manually add code in order to remove it. That smells of strong-arm tactics and Youtube should be above that kind of behavior.

Worst "feature" ever added to my web site without my consent or warning. Now my competitors videos are showing up as related content in my site. Thanks for providing me with a way to promote my competitors. I also have an issue of the content of the related videos on my site. I try to keep it clean and now you have taken control of content shown under my URL. BAD BAD BAD.

perkoff said...

So now I have to go back and add a rel=0 to everyone of my videos that I don't want this feature on(that'd be all of them).

Why not make it so people have to modify the url to get your new cool features.

I didn't read all the comments, but everyone I read thinks that this feature sucks. Hopefully you change it. Thanks.

True frustration is trying to watch an other-language video with subtitles. If the video links pop up you miss the subtitled dialog, you have to rewind far enough to give it enough time for the links to go away.
YouTube is the new Mel Gibson.

I have a family site with a section on baby shower games. I've got three fab videos of shower games, showing kids, guests and parents having a fun time. I don't want calendar girl or child sex abuse prevention videos coming up as "related" - and I don't think my visitors - mostly sent to me by Google - want to see them either. I'm surprised I haven't had any complaints yet. Thank goodness my site specifically states it is for parents and has a Terms and Conditions/Privacy Policy to (I hope) cover me. What about educational sites featuring YouTube videos? I'd hate to think of schoolchildren accessing some of this content. Absolutely horrible. As a parent and webmaster - I'm shocked.

Thanks.

This is a pretty poor feature and has pushed me away from youtube. There is a site that allows no length limits for videos and has a great video player that streams continously. Check it out w w w dot iklipz dot com. Great embedded player as well.

WBNSradio said...

I understand the purpose behind this feature, but I agree with several others here that the default setting should be without related videos, make it an option to ADD not one to remove.

There are just so many videos on here that you cannot guarantee the content will be safe or even acceptable.

But I guess THANKS for at least making it optional. I was about to remove and discontinue embedding videos had I not found this blog entry. Hopefully others will find this as well instead of being turned away.

I HATE this new "feature". It is taking advantage of users who embed video in other sites. Your "explanation" of how to use the parameter to turn it off is very poorly done. I had to examine the source code for the blog entry to see how it is actually used. If you are going to keep this poor design as the default there should be a simple way of generating the html code with the parameter for turning it off in place - the user should not be forced to hand edit the code.

And if all that weren't bad enough, the little images aren't clear enough to communicate what they may link to. If people want to view related video - the old method of linking through to youtube.com and navigating from there makes much more sense.

This is clearly an example of how some really cool eye-candy with no practical use got pushed through a boardroom committee making bad group-think decisions.

Congratulations though, you did prompt me to dig around and find this blog - first time I've been here, and first time I've commented - and it was brought about by frustration rather than being pleased by great service.

This is TERRIBLE. HORRIBLE. I run a business; I use video on my website and on myspace and I'm committed to making sure everything is family-friendly. Now, you're making ME work to change the code, instead of offering this feature as an OPTION for those who might want it.

Take it back. I'm seriously considering using a completely different vid hosting service. This is a very bad decision.

GetintheBag32 said...

This feature really isn't too bad, guys. What, are people so damn lazy, they can't change the embed code. I'm sure that they can figure it out. It shouldn't be causing people this much stress.

Thank you LowlyWaiter for helping me get rid of this on my blog. Here are the instructions, said a different way:
1. Go to the 2nd time "http://www.youtube.com/v/XXXXXXXXXX" appears in your embed, where XXXXXXXXX is the list of numbers and alphabet id-ing your video.
2. Directly at the end of this XXXXXXXXXXX string, and before the closing quotation marks (") place the 7 characters "&rel=0 ". Be sure that you have a space before the closing " It should look like "http://www.youtube.com/v/XXXXXXXXXXX&rel=0 " That should make this whole related video crap disappear.

I can't handle the clutter that pops onto the video screen any time my mouse touches the embed. Even over the controls the things pop up? It would be less bothersome if there was a long wait before it pops up, so that you must deliberately linger over the embed. As it is, I can't stand it and find myself avoiding watching clips.

who the HELL thought this was a good idea? The related vids are already on the right side of the screen. Please please remove this bug (it's a bug, not a feature). It's annoying and gets in the way every time I go to change the volume or the progress bar. And no nonsense that it's ok because you give an option to modify the URL to remove it. Make adding this bug the exception, not the default. Looking down this blog I don't find a single person who liked it, one person who didn't mind it, and hundreds who hate it. Get a clue.

genau310: THANK YOU FOR THAT! How retarded and frustrating that Google wouldn't make the directions so clear and easy. I agree that they are not trying to make it easy to remove this.

The option is a fantastic idea, just not what the market wants out of the "embed" feature. The whole point of embedding is to have that specific video.

Is Google turning slightly "evil"? They are censoring their search results in China...

It is a great feature and a great idea, but it is not wanted in any way by the community.

I have to say I like it. The other videos load fast rather than having to go back to YouTube and click and load. Understandably though from the comments, this definitely gives an opening for content to appear that people might not want on their blog/site where it's embedded. A better way might be to pull the related videos from our own playlists or subscriptions (i.e. something we've already vetted).

What a disaster!

Thankfully I now know how turn this off, but perfectly lovely videos are being followed up by some of the most foul stuff I've seen. How someone thinks on is related to the other is beyond me.

I have family sites. I was using YouTube videos, both my own and others. I wonder how many people saw utter trash on my sites before I got to the switch!

This was irresponsible in the extreme in my view.

If this is what we can expect from YouTube, I'll be looking for another way to upload videos to my sites. Then YouTube can be a cesspool if it wants to.
