How We Think About Social

Social features like commenting, rating, video responses and even just emailing or IMing a video's link have always been a part of the YouTube experience. So that's why we spend a lot of time here thinking about how to make the site an even more social place. We're especially focused on wanting to make it as easy as possible for you to find the people you know on YouTube and to follow their activity (what videos are they rating? favoriting? commenting on?) by subscribing to their channel; it's a great way to stay up on what they're into as well as discover new content yourself. As you consume these videos and start sharing your own, you in turn "feed" your friends a tasty helping of video goodness. It breaks into this virtuous distribution cycle:

As we've built these tools directly into YouTube itself, with things like friend suggestions based on your Gmail address book and connecting your YouTube account to social networks via our AutoShare feature, we've started to see people becoming even more social. Some of this activity is hard to quantify -- every day millions of YouTube links are sent via email, IM, Twitter and other communication methods -- but we can tell you that:
  • Over one million people are AutoSharing videos to Twitter, Facebook and Google Reader
  • Each AutoShared Tweet you send out from YouTube turns into an average of seven new sessions on YouTube.com
  • Over a million people have found and subscribed to at least one friend on YouTube based on our Friend Suggest feature
  • Most Tweeted video yesterday? Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance"
  • More than one million new subscriptions are created every day
We hope these numbers will only rise as we focus on giving you the tools you need to connect with the people who matter most to you. In the process, expect to be entertained and informed by the videos circulating amongst your most trusted friends, subscribers and networks. You can get started today by ensuring that you're discoverable on YouTube (click here and check off "Let others find my channel on YouTube if they have my email address") and by connecting your account to your external networks via AutoShare (click here to set that up).

What do you think "social" on YouTube means, and where would you like to see it go? Leave a comment below.

I know that many partners would love to communicate directly with their subscriber base with text-based announcements (rather than uploading a video). Perhaps limit the characters of this "text broadcast" just like Twitter. The YT sub-base is hard to re-build on Twitter and displaces the conversation.

I COMPLETELY agree with BOBJENZ... it's so hard to communicate with your subscriber base... other thank putting text in the "info" of a newly-uploaded video, there aren't many ways to get their attention.

Would be good if I could use my Google profile instead of having to fill out profile details again. And my recent activity could feature on there.

"What do you think 'social' on YouTube means, and where would you like to see it go?"
Flame wars. All the time. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I'd like to see it head in a less violent direction.

I love the fact that every video I post goes directly to Facebook. I have had several facebook comments on my Youtube videos over there. I have also been commenting more on videos here. This site is growing and expanding.

Sometimes when I click a YouTube link on another social network, I get "This video has been removed by the user." and just the general YouTube home page. It would be immensely helpful if instead what popped up was the home page for the user that removed the video. That way you could at least see other videos by the same user, or possibly the one you wanted, but upgraded to HD.

Youtube should create a Twitter module for channels like you did for U2 Live concert channel.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE VIDEOS WATCHED COUNTER BACK.
AND THE OLD BULLETINS BACK.
Apart from that it's fine!!

Did the Videos Watched counter just got taken down? It was my pride! Why not just leave it optional to appear with the check-mark system as with the other items in the description box?

I really liked it.

You don't have to converte YouTube into "Facebook". Social not only means sharing, it means sharing for some purpose. Why people is social? Vanidate, knowledge, feelings, etc. Sharing is the most simple social thing you can do here at YouTube.

Remeber, Social is not Only sharing. :)

Bulletins were an excellent social feature! And you removed them!

You should seriously add bulletins back... YouTube was better than any other social network back in 2007

Please listen to the community and add bulletins back

Is something wrong with the comment feature? I've left comments on videos but they don't show up. Fix this please!
