YouTube Musicians Launch a Label

We love to brag about successful projects that happen in our community, and so when we heard about DFTBA Records, the label that's all about acts that rose up on YouTube, run by YouTube stalwarts/songwriters Alan Lastufka (fallofautumndistro) and Hank Green (vlogbrothers), we just knew this had to be the subject of a Music Tuesday spotlight. Thus, on the homepage today is a DFTBA showcase, including a premiere of "Live on the Internet" from comedy duo Rhett & Link (cameo alert! a certain rapper appears in the video). You can also hear Hank and Alan talk about why they started DFTBA -- which, by the way, stands for "don't forget to be awesome" -- and experience a taste of their own music.

To date, DFTBA Records has released 10 CDs from YouTube stars like Dave Days, Venetian Princess, and Rhett & Link, and sales have surpassed $100,000. They operate as an independent distribution network, managing digital sales, CD production and (soon) merchandise for popular users like Michael Buckley. So if you're a talented YouTube user with an original song to sing, you may want to check out their site for more details on how to participate...and be even more awesome.

The latest way of viewing comments is by clicking the buton "Show More Comments".. Which is a bit uncomfortable n inconvenient. The previous way of viewing comments 'page by page' was easier.. Was able to view many comments easily. I hope you can find out ppl's choice once again by a poll. Surely everybody wud like da previous way. Thanks.

I am so happy to see DFTBA Records getting attention on the front page of YouTube. Thank you for featuring this amazing effort.

While I'm glad your blog points out that DFTBA Records releases albums by well-known YouTubers (like Dave Days, Venetian Princess, Rhett and Link), one of the true delights of DFTBA Records to me is discovering YouTube musicians who aren't as well known but who are equally (or yeah, sometimes even more) talented.

DFTBA Records has DFTBA Radio Hour, a weekly podcast which features music by DFTBA artists (the podcast is available on iTunes), and I've discovered so many great musicians that way, including many I'd never heard of and some whose music I would never have thought I'd enjoy (Music about Dr. Who? Seriously? Yes, actually, it's great!).

As a result of being exposed to YouTube artists who I might never have found out about otherwise, I am pretty sure I own the entire DFTBA Records catalog at this point. And there are other DFTBA artists I love whose albums haven't been released yet, but who I get to hear on the Radio Hour. So yes, by all means, enjoy Dave Days, Venetian Princess and Rhett & Link. But don't leave without checking out Alan Lastufka & Tom Milsom or Michael Aranda or Driftless Pony Club. If you just listen to the people you've already heard of, or just listen to the music you already think you'll like, you're missing out on one of the great gifts that DFTBA Records has to offer.

Thanks Hank and Alan!
DFTBA!!!

:D Always makes me happy when nerdfighters help make the world suck less. DFTBA Records exists for that purpose. So many amazing artists don't have the connections to make it in the music industry today, and DFTBA Records helps them out. Alan, Hank, you Don't FTBA.

To everyone involved, and my fellow nerdfighters,
DFTBA.

indie is so lost in the translation these days, I think that DFTBA is keeping the definition characteristically true in buzzband indie music. KUDOS+10
