User Inspires Favicon Change

Favicon is short for "Favorites Icon" and it is a square icon that often appears in your Web browser's address bar or in your list of bookmarks.

An enterprising blogger at Typophile recently pointed out that our favicon was fairly unreadable in a post that caught our eye. We didn't disagree with him and so we took him up on his suggestion, made a few extra tweaks and have now launched it on the site. (It will take a few weeks to update in other areas on the Web.) You can see the improvement in the before-and-after graphic below. As you can hopefully tell, the favicon on the right is now much more clearly defined.

So thank you, Miha at Typophile, for calling that out and being the catalyst behind this change. You are among the many users who've inspired us to do better, and for that we've got a thank you gift with your name on it heading your way.

Margaret Stewart, User Experience Manager, recently favorited "Twits: Episode 1 - P. Diddy, Lindsay Lohan, Brooke Hogan."

Just noticed the Favicon update in Firefox earlier today acutally - nice change.

Care to share with the world what you guys are up to with the aspect ratio changes to the viewer?

16:9 videos are now housed in a 2:1, 960x480 viewer, and 4:3 videos are in a 2:35 960x360 viewer... To take maximum advantage of the site, it'd be nice to know which you're planning to stick with.

I'm still getting the Blogger one here.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Pascual. This new favicon looks like you tried a little too hard. And what is with the serif "Y"?

Shadizilla said...

I like that it's cleaned up, but I have to agree with Gordon -- It looks like there's a serif on the Y now, it might look better without it.

YouTube make a search tool in favorites please!

It would be much better if it was a transparency and NOT a white background. I have a black Firefox theme, and the favicon looks like complete crap. Or at least center it on the white background.

Brad said...

Andrew beat me to it. Even the default skin of my Firefox puts it over a tan background. The .ico format supports transparency, so why not take advantage?

I don't see what these guys are talking about when they mention serifs. I mean, I know what serifs are; I just don't see them. It's a vast and amazing improvement. Well done.

Well, was that HQ/expanded player with 16:9 width and 4:3 height bug fixed?

I've noticed, and I like it !

I don't undertsnad what people mean with a transparent background...No white and red ?That's their icon...Don't get it.

I'd like YouTube to have a way to show how many times does a video was favourited. And the rating sistem makes mistakes to be very commom...

The favicon is more like a box now =(. I liked it before, when it was more like... 3D maybe? Anyway, just like it was before.

I think it looks great. It creates a perfect optical effect if seen at the right distance.

HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!
One user go's and says "favicon for youtube is fairly unreadable" and you go straight to work to fix it. Thousands of youtube users go "We don't want to convert to the new youtube beta channel 2.0!" and the you completely ignore them wile continuing to prepare to force everyone to switch over to the new beta channel!

and P.S. who the crap rely cares about the stupid favicon to much!

Good game on the favicon change, even if it's not that important. At least being representative the best way possible, going to that somehow truly blurred part of the 'ub' is still something that is worth doing, as those (favicons) are something we see more and more often and also in what they can offer as tab/bookmark 'ID'.

Readability wins with me. Good job on the initiative design.

Your HD wide screen player is now wider than it should be as in 16.9 ratio. It has now unused black spaces on both sides. It's not really nice, it's unproportional. Go back to the 16.9 ratio HD player format, please!

Are some of you guys REALLY complaining that you like the old one better? You guys complain about every change, don't you? There is no reason not to like the new icon, the only difference is that it is clearer. Grow up.

my suggestion: i would use a blank (white/red)square with a smooth border without any text as favicon

alexandrojv said...

Nice! but why not get rid of the white, and make it transparent, for those that have a different color theme

*** What a fantastic improvement !
man...have i been waiting for that !

Why dont you stop with your fake posts
showing how good you listen to us (users).

I have personally reported at least 30 serious
bugs in the videoplayer/videopage/stream that have not been repaired in 8 months...i did not get a single reply or confirmation from you (YT)
not here not in the help fora..nowhere.

I never read anything about those serious bugs in here...only childish posts on stupid non-core
useless things as improving some favicon.

Wow ! youtube you are the best...very social
and listening to everyone..man everything important you blog is not worth the paper it is printed on...get real !

You act like a fake government..put up your fake smile...fill your pockets...while at the back end the country is a total mess.

Good God, some people can never be happy. I'm sure they're working on all those other things, folks! This is just a little something for fun. They're still allowed to have fun, right?

For people complaining about 'serifs' and the white background, go read Miha's original post. The new favicon uses subpixel antialiasing - the 'serifs' aren't real, they're only seen if the icon is magnified. At 1:1 they disappear. That's also why they have to have a white background, for technical reasons - and also because it's in their logo! What do you mean you want a transparent background? YouTube is red on white, if you change it it's not YouTube anymore is it?

Lovely to see this. I viewed the Typophile thread before and went, "miha's improvement is really crisp! I wonder if it'll be officially noticed?" and the first time I saw it live on the new site was browsing videos and deciding what to upload today.

Revisiting the thread revealed a link here, so that connected the dots. Like I said, lovely!

What's not so lovely is those of you with off-topic and spammy comments. YOU'RE ASHAMED! :p

YouTube staff in Italy are doing censorship without following any law.
Also a lot of old videos from RAI (public television) are removed any day (under RAI requests) without any reason!!!
Please check your staff in Italy!!!!

Italy is 73th on the rank for freedom of information. Help us not to worsen!

The updated favicon is more LCD friendly (assuming that you have an RGB LCD and not one of those less-common BGR LCDs.

AndrewNoNumbers said...

Holy crap I saw that last week but didn't know it would actually cause YouTube to make the change.

AndrewNoNumbers said...

The transparent thing people were talking about is that the four corner pixels should be transparent so that the icon looks more rounded on a dark bg. I also noticed the glare in the upper right has been eliminated, which is an ok sacrifice to fit a logo into a tiny icon. The old logo was obviously just shrunken down from a larger version, which is why there are artifacts. The new one was designed pixel by pixel.

owen said...

yeah it s/b a transpareny. the white bg corners look like a** in my ff bowser.

The new icon is a nice touch.

I'm wandering around YouTube today wondering what happened to the star ratings or thumbs-up or whatever.

And I'd like to make this suggesion and have no idea where, so forgive me if this is hte wrong place:

What disappoints me most about YouTube is that there's nothing other than the "spam" button.

There should be a "report this" button with some options:

- spam
- hate speech (race, gender, orientation, disability, national origin, religion)
- threat of violence (for all those comments recommending assassination of public figures)
- personal reference (for people whose real names get used in inappropriate ways, i.e., "John Smith from Xtown, Xstate sucks donkey dick")
- inappropriate for general audience (X-rated or crude/obscene remarks kids shouldn't be exposed to)

This would give YouTube some legal protection, too, since YouTube is the publisher... and the third item in the list is a felony.
