Release Notes: 9/17/09

We're back with a rundown of the new features and changes that went live recently:

Friend suggestions: As mentioned in a previous post, we've started the first phase of the "find your friends" project with a module on the homepage that makes friend suggestions based on the email addresses of people with whom you've shared videos on YouTube in the past. (Suggestions based on your Gmail address book will come soon.) Recommendations will be limited to people who have the "let someone find my channel if they have my email address" flag set.

Activity subscriptions: To this point, subscribing to someone meant never missing any of their uploads. But now, any new subscription you make will notify you of all public actions that user performs (uploads, favorites, ratings, comments, etc) in your Recent Activity module on the homepage. This should make it a lot easier to find cool videos: just see which videos your friends and other curators choose to interact with. (We've been calling this project "subtivity" internally.)

Trending Topics:
When there is a spike in searches on a given topic, we are beginning to tease that out on our browse pages to help you see what the world is watching on any given day. You might see the queries appear in a "Trending Topic" spotlight on that category's browse page or at the bottom of the page. We're testing how this performs and if it does well, we'll find a permanent home for it on the browse page and potentially more broadly on YouTube.

Sticky HQ:
When you switch to view a video in high quality and lean back to enjoy the wide player experience, having to lean forward again to switch the experience back on, video after video, can be a real chore. Moving forward, your choice is "sticky," meaning that when you "go wide" it will persist across your session. We're looking to make more of your video quality choices simpler and persistent so we'll be watching this one closely.

Effortless "More Comments":
Replacing the page-based system, we will now have a "Show More Comments" link at the bottom of comments that, when clicked, quickly appends 10 more comments to the end of the list.

New Discovery Features in Insight:
We've released three new features in our analytics tool that should give you more sophisticated ways of using Insight so you can better serve and understand your audience. Now you can access a "discovery over time" graph that combines data about your views with where those views came from; a "views from mobile" section where you can see which of your video's views came from mobile phones or platforms that use our APIs; and "views from subscribers" where you can more deeply understand how the homepage subscriptions module, the subscriptions page, and subscription email drive views of your videos. Full post in the Biz Blog.

Resume where you left off:
Let's say you're watching an epic (read: longer than 20 minutes) video, and you get distracted and click away. The next time you return to the video, it will resume where you left off watching, assuming you've watched more than one minute of the video and there are more than three minutes left.

Subscriptions comes to Shows, Movie Trailers:
Subscribe to your favorite shows on YouTube to never miss a new episode. Find the show you want to watch, go to its About page, click Subscribe, and episodes that hit your inbox will indicate the name of the show (as opposed to the name of the channel or provider). In addition, you can also subscribe to our movie trailers page to never miss any of these film promos.

Poster art in Movies:
Move over, thumbnails! Films in our movies section can now display vertical poster art if the partner provides it.

Comments welcome below or in our forum.

Best, The YouTube Team

Awesome!!!

Everything is great except the whole "more comments" thing. Some videos don't even show the button when there is many more comments to show.

Alright- So what happened to those masthead options, guys?

THANK YOU FOR THIS. It has frustrated me the way the comments appear.

To make the comments the best they may be, have them in increments of 20(or 10 like you currently do) and add a button called "view next 20 comments".

The way that the "view all comments" makes the page vertically longer & takes awhile to load isnt good at all. It makes the page take a looonnngg while to load.

Also, how about longer video times? 10 minutes is not enough.

Pretty much all of these are either stupid or useless, especially the comments one. Having to click a link and have it add just ten more at a time is both time consuming (read: MORE EFFORT, whoever thought this was effortless was an idiot) and extends the page ever longer the further you go into reading comments. I preferred the page set up, and I wish there was an option to change it back, because this new system is just inane.

The resume one is pretty good... if you're incapable of opening tabs for some reason. The only way I can see this being needed would be for annotations, and it would be better if links in annotations actually opened in new tabs, rather than loading in the same tab as the video.

Wow thats's pretty awesome what ya'll are doing with the website! I really like the new Insight thing, it really helps filmmakers like me! Keep up the great work!

These are all stupid changes. Stop screwing with your site and fix the bugs, get rid of the trolls/hackers, reform your DMCA, and most importantly, BETTER ALLOW FREEDOM OF SPEECH. You're based in America, a free country. You shouldn't be limiting other's freedom of speech. If you don't do these four things I told you to do instead of playing with your Google Web Optimizer in hopes of creating something that's either stupid or a bad design choice, I will sue you. My father has been a lawyer since the 1970s, and by now I am not afraid to sue you.

Pick your poison, YouTube Team: Being sued for several EXTREMELY valid reasons, or being criticized BY YOUR OWN COMMUNITY.

The "resume where you left off" thing is awesome. I used to always write notes on bits of paper to remember where I was up to when watching Google Talk videos etc.

Mikelo! said...

Okay, I like the resume feature and the comments feature. However, I'd like to know when we can expect to see a choice of more than three thumbnails to pick from. I have two videos up about changing your thumbnail, and I'm constantly getting bombarded with how to either upload your own (like anyone can on blip.tv) or how to get more than three to choose from (like Revver).

When can we expect to see that? Please let me know so I can let my viewers know.

Zdecent said...

I think that the description box should have a scroll bar - as when watching a music video with lyrics in the side - you miss the video if you scroll down to read lyrics - also applies to normal videos with long descriptions.

Quadunit404 - possibly one fo the empiest - stupidest - un-called-for threats i have ever seen... RIDICULOUS

AntneyW said...

Awesome! I love all the changes going on to the site!

jack42 said...

rather than twitterize the comments (awful thing on Twitter if you're on your fifth or sixth "More" and accidentally navigate away -- you MUST start over), why not put them in a scroll box? then you can keep the video in view and scroll the comments (sure, keep the "paging" or "more" inside the scroll box).

thomas said...

i cant wait for these new features

radiometricx said...

Instead of having to click a link to see more comments, why not just display the additional comments on the page? That would seem to be the most efficient and the most easiest way to do it.

René Bjørnskov said...

Looking through 4000 comments 10 at the time, to find a reply is not going to be worth it, this will kill the comments except for those just saying first or lol. Also sad to see that the hulufication of youtube continues.

"These are all stupid changes."

Actually, I don't see how they're ALL stupid. In fact, the only inconvenient one is the View More Comments thing.
And Youtube, I like the new Insight updates I've read about so far.

"BETTER ALLOW FREEDOM OF SPEECH. You're based in America, a free country. You shouldn't be limiting other's freedom of speech. ... I will sue you."

You actually don't have rights to sue Youtube for lack of Freedom of Speech. While the USA allows it, we still follow rules on websites telling us not to troll or anything similar.

I have always hated this comment layout.

Always.

EFFORTLESS?! If anything, this takes MORE effort, looks strange, stretches the page out *WAY* too much, and has bugs worse than the last version of the comments. You should've FIXED THE BETTER SYSTEM instead of releasing a new version before it completely worked. I've always liked comments being organized into pages. It made it easy to skip through quickly to find my old ones- Hey! Where'd all the old comments go?! I hope we can see them all again soon... Some of the more popular YouTubers are REALLY going to hate this. The ones that try to read every single comment they get will be unable to if their videos get hundreds of comments an hour. Fans won't have as much of a reassuring feeling that their comments are being taken into consideration if they disappear in half an hour.

Why does the "Show all comments" link disappear at the end of a video's comments anyway? I should still have the option to view them on their own page if the video causes problems. And why is there no "View less comments" option? Or view the next ten and not the last? Or the next twenty and not the last, like the old system would let you? Or view comments from a certain point specified in the URL like back in 2007?

well I don't really like the comments feature , it might be just because its new , but idk it kinda feels strange , the page goes longer and longer this way , maybe previous one was better.

fhucho said...

Great improvements, continue like this! I really like one simple but useful feature not mentione here (cause it's not s new) - I can play/pause by clicking on the video.

Zaranyzerak said...

"More Comments" is a lovely idea, but it doesn't thread responses with their respective comments properly, whereas the page-based comments does. Please fix this. It's been a irritating issue for YEARS now...

I like the changes, thanks Google!

One thing about the "Subscribe to recent activity" thing is that it completely renders the Friends list useless now. I mean, that's what the friends list was for, right? To see what they were up to. But now with this update, it's COMPLETELY useless, seeing how just ANYONE that YOU don't even know can see what you're doing. At least with the Friend request system, you had a LITTLE privacy at least! The only thing the Friend system is useful for any more is sending PM's to people with Friend Lock enabled. That's the ONLY thing useful left with Friend lists.

Also, what ever happened to the masthead customization options as stated in a previous blog post? This new masthead is still pretty dull and boring to me.

k said...

Good changes. I would like to see videos to at least 15 minutes for everyone.

@Quadunit404

You are pathetic.

Anyway I think all of these changes are positive and I am enjoying all of them. ;)

Madfoot said...

Hey Google, you should really fix your glitches before adding new features, like the glitch that always tells me I have 1 PM when I have 0.

AVDJ said...

cool moves, youtube.

Kiwi said...

it would be fantastic if there was an option to edit the recent activity box.
like: only have the activity of your subscriptions appear instead of all friends, or manually disable to show ratings and only have favorites appear and vice versa.

Hey look youtube is forcing the beta channels again http://youtube-channels-beta.blogspot.com/

Clarissa said...

It would be really nice if those with accounts could choose between comment systems. The new one makes me want to rip my hair out; I can't quickly switch between the comment I'm reading and the video with the new system. Don't fix it if it's not broken :|

kamalias said...

The only thing i want to complaint is about video player aspect ratio. Why youtube changed it to anamorphic for HQ and HD.... I think youtube should make it like this.. if the video is normal 4:3 aspect ratio...the player will automatically appear as 4:3 same with the 16:9 or movie normally made as anamorphic aspect ratio..but now even 16:9 video the player will appear as anamorphic...or just leave it as before... Come on youtube...this site originally created for community like us..but now it is more to "big studio"... I know youtube needs fund to survive.. but don't put the community behind...

JadeNicole said...

Well the View More Comments thing is really inconvenient as you have to scroll down A LOT. It's quite irritating actually.

I honestly wish you guys would change things for the better for once. And why didn't you do something about not being able to "thumb up" already thumbed down comments with 7 or more TDs. It seems silly that you allow a poor rating to hide comments with no way for people to vote it back up.

DoggySpew said...

An edit button would be nice when commenting.

JadeNicole said...

Oh God YES DoggySpew!! An edit button is definitely a must. Another is tossing out this horrible 16:9/4:3 aspect ratio or giving someone an option to view it regularly. I have 3 HDTVs I really don't need the faux "High Def" experience on my Youtube, it's horrible.

Get it together YT :/

mccommas said...

Why does Youtube play cute with the comments?
I can make a comment on a video but there is no option to READ my comments and more importantly other comments. I can de-click the hide all comments box but it still does not make the comments appear. This is so with some of the videos and not others. Why does Youtube have to play cute with the comments. If you know what I have to do please email me at johnray67@hotmail.com

Thanks

Kojoto said...

New comments suck. What was wrong with the old one? How is scrolling down any "easier" or "more convenient" to use?

Patrick said...

I'm just wondering if it's possible to add any more crap on to the viewing area of the page? I think there's still some room there for you guys to add some more stupid little popups or ads from google. I didn't actually want to watch that video clip anyways; I was much more interested in looking at the stuff you overlayed on top of it.

DoggySpew said...

Oh, I'd also like to suggest to limit the number accounts a subscriber can have.
Some people have hundreds upon hundreds, that are created by votebots to upvote or downvote video's. Also, it gives a false impression of a large subsribers account, because these accounts often are subscribing themselves.

How many accounts does one person actually need anyway ? 10 at most. If he/she would want to make more accounts, then he/she should hork up the money for it.

Marc said...

Just noticed you've made all videos view in a 2.35:1 ratio...are we expecting movies on YouTube soon?

Hermgirl said...

Ok, this is the *second* time I've tried to post this comment--for some reason, this page reloaded while I was writing it, and I lost my comment.

And I would like you to PLEASE fix the video comment section--I am not the only one for whom it is NOT working at all. There is NO "More Comments" button anywhere, and the few times I *can* see *any* comments it is only a few, disjointed, out of context exchanges that I can't make sense of!

I liked the old comment system where if you wanted to see all the comments you went to another page where the comments were laid out in their proper context, so you could follow the conversations--this is FRUSTRATING!!! One of the things I like the MOST about YouTube is being a part of the conversations, and now I can't DO that!!!

Also, while you're fixing things, it would be nice to have that "delete" video from subscription page queue button we used to have--I am really tired of having videos I've already looked at pop up on my subscription page--and the only way to get rid of them now is to go to the vid and watch a couple of seconds of it--I'm sure you realize how time-consuming this is, right? Although I'm sure that might be part of your plan...

I haven't been a you tuber for a long time but I do use it to post my little tutorials on my blog. But within the last week or so YouTube works when it wants to. My videos aren't showing up on my blog, if they do I can't play them I just get the cirle loading thing.

Then I head over to YouTube and get the loading thing forever before I finally give up. When I do finally get on YouTube I can watch some videos, it's like the lottery, what are the odds I get to watch one. So I haven't made any as I don't even think I will be able to upload let alone watch them. I have visited other blogs that have YouTube videos on them and sometimes they are there, sometimes they aren't. Sometimes I can watch them, sometimes I can't.

This is riduculous already. The forum is a joke as all you get is some smarty pants with a smart remark. If anyone has any idea what to do in this case I would greatly appreciate some advice. I have cleared my cache, cleared my cookies, installed flashplayer (again), made sure my browser was up to date and then prayed. None of it worked. Can anyone help?
Thanks Bunches!

There was a horrible comment made by a person calling African Americans "niggers". I suggest that that should be handeled, I do not apperciate being called that and I dont know any self-respecting person would ever let anyone call them sometihng other than their rightfull name. It is very offencive that that was even aloud to be said the people on the site should have some restrictions.

How can I get my view counter to resart? It has been stalled for about 5 days. On the insight page it shows that it is still being watched, but the number of views doesn't change. Any helpful tips?
