Annotations Made Easier
Today, we are making it easier to add annotations directly to your YouTube videos. Simply login to YouTube, watch your video on the watch page and click on the video to start adding annotations. But don't worry - for those who need more control, you'll still be able to access the separate annotations editor.
We are also making it easier for your annotations to link to a variety of different YouTube pages. You'll be able to link to another video, channel page, playlist, group or search query. What's more, you'll even be able to link to a video response page or message window to prompt for feedback from your audience.

This is a horrible "feature." I don't want to add any annotations and
now I can't watch any of my own videos without that damn editor
appearing. There should be a way to have this stupid thing turned off

uh, there is. if you look under the video screen theres a "switch off annotations editor" option.
the editor isnt even that noticable with the exception of a little thing on the bottom left corner. seriously, is there anything you people ever like? even with the last update there was still a good deal of people hating on it.
theres nothing horrible about something that makes your life easier on here.
yeah but it comes back, and it's annoying to re-click it over and over again. all this does is promote lazyness.
As a watcher of many videos I find this annotation feature very annoying, in fact I tend to just end the videos with the annotations and go onto another. Nor do I share, rate or favorite any videos with annotations. This is the worst thing you could have done! When I want more information about the video or the person posting I always go to the posting on the right hand side to look. Please, please, please, do away with this feature. I am sure many feel the way I do but do not know where to tell you about it. It is spoiling you tube.

Has anyone noticed a lights off button on videos?
Seems like this feature is coming soon. I was watching a CSPAN video and there was a lights off button on the top right corner of the video.

no it doesnt and as i said, it doesnt take up the whole screen so it shouldnt be a hassle having to re-click it over and over again.
as for figgy, not all right hand side postings give you info. not only that you CAN turn off the damn annotations too so they dont appear on your videos.
back on the "promote lazyness" statement, i just find it funny that you think it promotes that. isnt not wanting to click something repeatedly lazy?

It's going to be pointless to go back and forth like this. I for one just find it annoying having to click the button over and over again when before if I needed to edit my video everything I needed was neatly there on the right hand side. When ever I want to give info on my video I put it in the description, it works just as good and doesn't have all those bubbles in the videos.
The annotations are a great feature. Keep it up.
I have to say that this new feature is really obnoxious. It's just another thing (in adition to adds) I have to click to make go away at the beginning of my videos.
I hate the annotations as they are being abused. People are littering their videos with these stupid things, blocking the video.
Now, sometimes they're going to be useful, but I would really like an ability to turn them off as I watch them. Just a radio button to instantly remove them all, or turn them back on again.
In fact, it's just good policy to always have these new features you develop as opt-in, rather than compulsory viewing.
just be glad you're able to disable them in the first place. why even THAT gets hated on is just beyond silly.
At least give us an option to have it automatically turned off by default!

Can you please make a way to turn off the annotations editor because EVERY time I watch my videos, it turns back on. It's so annoying and all this unnecessary things keep popping up in my video when I'm just trying to watch it. Youtube has gotten really complicated over the last few years. Just keep it simple. We already have the regular annotations editor and that's already enough. That's why it's called YOU-tube. It's supposed to be user-friendly.
I hate when I watch my videos, and the editor is automatically turned on. I shouldn't have to keep clicking "turn off" "turn off" "turn off" everytime I watch one of my own videos.
I think it should be removed, or at least with an option to disable it.

if you had to do such a thing, and we all know it didn't have to be done, then why didn't you make it so it had to activated and not automatically on. this is so damn annoying. i cant even enjoy watching my videos now. i hate it. why? why?....and why dont you start fixing the things that need to be fixed, like the message alert and the comments....both of those are in need of fixing. mine shows i have messages when i dont have any and the comments number is so far off....little things like this you should be working on and not ruinning my videos watching.....i hate this new feture...please listen to all these comments and get rid of it....

This does make it easier to add annotations on the fly, but I can see how it can aggravate people who do not make use of the feature by its defaulting to "On".

*Deep linking in a video via an annotation works now.
*Publishing speed is amazingly fast and does not hang up allowing the "type and go" approach.
* Switching it on/off, to test links and so on, can hang it up - or in some cases mute the sound (?).

An aside: If annotations are being abused in a video, thus reflecting poorly on the uploader, the solution is simply to cease viewing those videos instead of giving him/her more reason to continue by increasing viewcounts.
Annotations have many practical uses, such as creating a "Chapter Select Screen" similar to a DVD's, providing "skip points", or links on the title and end bumper of a video.
Condemning all use of annotations due to certain bad experiences isn't all too evenhanded, is it? I run into bad videos all the time - I just close the window.
This is horrible, it ruins the pleasure of viewing my own videos when reading comments, etc.
NEVER force a new feature without the option to turn it off, please!!

I'd still like an option to have annotations turned off automatically (like how now we can pick "always play in high quality" or "always play in low quality"). Annotations annoy me and it would just save some hassle to have an auto turn off option. Thanks!
I'd rather have it be "turn annotations editor on" than "turn off", but right now, the "turn off" button doesn't work at all. It says "contacting server", but doesn't ever turn off.
I don't mind the idea of being able to edit right there on the spot. In fact, I like it. But I would rather not have the display right overtop of my own video when I'm only trying to watch it. I'd rather it be turned off by default (and have turn on/off work).

I tried the annotations today, but i see you can only link within youtube. That defeats the purpose.. Why not give us the opportunity to link to blogs or websites outside of YouTube that is relevant to the video? This gives the viewer a much richer experience
oh for the love of god make it so its OFF by default. then it will be an EXCELLENT feature.
come on people. you cannot spare 2 tiny seconds just to click something? if you can handle opening videos repeatedly, you can handle clicking an option too. also, give youtube a break. this is something they just brought out. its not going to run smoothly. every thing is glitchy as soon as it comes out. thats why theres beta testing.
also, they werent "fixing what aint broken". they were improving it so it's much easier for the author of videos to use them. if you get upset over a simple little graphic that doesnt interfere with the video at all, then i dont know what i can do for you.
Mine says "trying to reach the server" for so long. It never reaches it. I click the switch off button, but it still shows the cursor and if I click, it brings up an annotation bubble. WTF?! This feature should be optional and you should be able to enable/disable it in account settings, AND in the video interface.

We shouldn't have to click that every single time. we don't want to edit the annotations in our videos every single time. If they followed advice from people like you to "just deal with it", then this site would be long gone. You can't do anything for us, you aren't a member of YouTube. Idk if you realize, but this is an EXTREMELY easy thing for them to do in terms of fixing this. It's one line of coding that involves having this off by default. You have no valid point in anything you said.

I'm not sure what these people are complaining about, but I have to say that it's a great feature for people who don't want to waste time. I have to agree with the people who are in favor of this.

The new annotation option is very annoying. There should be an option in the account settings to permanently turn that off because I have to click Switch Off every time I view one of my videos.
It's not even that it takes 2 seconds it's the fact that Youtube just forced it on us with no way to turn it off by default. They could have used their time to improve on other things.

I second the motion to have an account setting to "turn annotations off by default". Also, it would be nice to have a similar setting for "automatically start movies on page load" on or off. This would be nice as I usually like to let the videos load a little bit before watching, and I find myself literally scrambling the mouse over for the pause button every time a video loads to avoid annoying lag.
Any way to disable this feature completely?

I don't understand why you always get some people who are opposed to any calls for choice. Like they want everyone, including themselves, to be told what to do. As if there's someone else who's in control who knows what they're doing and always knows what we want better than we do! :-(

I like the high quality videos now but YouTube is turning into a video editing fest... and not an actual viewer. If I have to actually log out to watch one of my videos without the poor excuse for a CPU killing Flash applet loading, so be it. But God, how much I hate that thing.
I would like to see the ability to insert a playlist which plays videos one after the other and not just to the playlist page. I think it is a good question and makes good business sense. my other comment never showed, why is that? Doesn't Youtube make money from people watching partner videos? Was what I wrote out of line? at least let this feature be user friendly which it isnt now. there is no way to turm it off. watching full screen now is not possible without the greay bar across the top telling me to exit full screen if i want to continue editing, which i wans't doing in the first place. this thing is plain annoying. have a way to turn it off completely if the user doesnt want it. how simple is that.

It's VERY annoying. I don't like it at all.
This is one good place to add a pop-up, asking us our preferences ONCE. Then, we have the option of choosing it or not. I like YouTube for videos, not text. Please allow us to have account preferences to remove the annotation editor by default, and for that matter, to disable annotations by default on all viewed videos. There has yet to be a time I actually wanted to see either one.

I really like the annotations feature.. BUT not the editor being turned on by default.
I don't know if it's an HD thing or not... but I get a message "trying to reach the server... please wait" ... when I turn the annotations editor it usually goes away. It might be because it takes me a few seconds to turn it off... I can't stand the annotations editor being on by default. I really don't see the value of having it turned on "just in case" .
Trying to reach server is always in the way.

I find the superimposition of the title of the video and the star rating highly annoying. I won't use YouTube videos any longer on my blog until this "feature" is turned off by default. The text destroys the visual appeal of the video and I'm tempted to delete all the video posts that I've already made. You Tube is shooting itself in the foot with this "improvement"!

I watch YouTube to watch videos, not to read anyones comments going across the screen, unless it's intregral to the plot (you do know what integral means?). If you can't put it in the comments on the side, then don't put it at all. And guess what everyone, this is what happens when big business buys out the little guy. YouTube is owned by Google. Good luck trying them to change anything. 80-something comments and they haven't done anything yet. And to 911's delight, I might just have to find another video website.

Ill make a different point, because the obvious truth seems to not be relevant to you. The feature is glitchy, when you go HD with it on, it will not turn off.
Besides that, I personally do not use it other then when I first make my videos. I'm sure everyone else can agree with me on this one, or if they're going to edit their videos once to explain certain things. (Possible mistakes in old videos that can be corrected with annotations), but as a whole, it isn't used.
Personally I like this feature, but it doesn't prove your point, because I don't like to use it every single time I view a video of mine. If the option was always there to turn it on, rather then to turn it off (My point, not yours), then I would be very satisfied with this feature. As it is right now, it needs work.

I want this off! How do I turn it off and keep it off permanently? I mean how many people annotate videos, probably less than 10%, so why is it always on for people who just watch them? It makes absolutely no sense! Everytime I turn on a new video I have to also push the turn off annotations button. How annoying!
