New Features for the YouTube Embeddable Video

You don't have to be on the YouTube site to watch videos. The YouTube player can be added to virtually any website, giving website creators and web surfers infinite access to the YouTube library. With close to 44 percent of our users watching embedded videos, we're committed to constantly refining the player. Today, we are pleased to announce four new features:

  • High-quality start images (thumbnails) – Before you press play on embedded YouTube videos, the thumbnails for the video will be presented in high-quality. We're pleased with the results – let us know if you agree.

  • Search in embeddable player – At the close of an embedded video or if the user moves the mouse towards the top of the player, a search box will appear. Not only will you be able search from within the embedded player, you will be able to watch videos through the same window. That's right, you can search all of YouTube from the comfort of your favorite blog, news, or humor page.

  • Integrated video annotations – Annotations enable video producers to incorporate text information into their videos, create choose your own adventure-style stories or add links to any YouTube video. People watching videos through the embedded player can now join the fun.

  • Integrated closed captions – Back in August we started allowing video creators to add captions to their videos. Closed Captions are now available in embedded videos like this one:

Our open APIs and embeddable players allow more and more people to transform the way they distribute and enjoy videos while avoiding the traditional cost and hassle of hosting videos. We look forward to seeing the fun and creative ways you will use these new features.

Let us know what you think by leaving a comment here or posting in our Help Forums.

Have fun,

The YouTube Team

This is exciting new for the embedded feature to show the caption, but I think it only works for single player, not for the playlist embedded player yet! Would you please make the fullscreen button and caption features showed up in embedded playlist too. That would be great.

Wow, the search thing is awesome! I really like it. One suggestion: Make it possible to be able to rate and leave a comment through an embedded player (if you are logged in). That would be so awesome!

Is it possible to use annotations and play a video directly within the embed? This would help for choose-your-own-adventure style videos. Thanks.

Great stuff! When do you think you will allow for high quality start up on launch. The only way now to get people to see the stuff high quality is to place a link and change the end code so that it actually launches when they click on it.

The searchbox looks upgly.
The search knob in lightblue color isn't the greatest color for this.
Rather make it red like the progressbar or give an option to set an own color

Please vote for Chelsea Musick at the CMT music contest. She won the last round and now the loser of that round is having everyone vote against her which is making her score go down. Please help her to catch up by voting at:

I want to watch a specific one from 4 months ago, whomp whomp I have to go through 12-20 pages first. BOOOO! Eh? Can you help? EH???

There should be a closed captions editor just as there is one for video annotations. Some people would prefer that, or they may not know how to create subtitle files. I hope you understand what I mean. I know this post is about EMBEDDED videos, but it's relevant, as you talked about captions.

The search box looks absolutely horrible. It totally spoils the look of my website. Plus, there's no real need for it. If people want to search YouTube, they'll go to the site. Forcing a search box on them when they're interested in the embedded video and nothing else is daft. Fingers crossed that you rethink this.

chadfults said...

Thank you for your services and continued development... BUT I hate the search bar in embedded videos. :)

LearnMyPc said...

Get rid of the search bar...it looks awful.

asavoie01 said...

This sucks. Its bad enough you subject users to questionably tagged content after each video but putting that at the beginning is really crummy.

The least you can do is provide an option to turn it off.

If this stays on I will pull my videos off the site.

weirdovideos said...

search bar hijack is making me want to take down all of my videos. whose genius idea was that?

snowmaker11 said...

If I embed a movie into my site, I want them to WATCH the video...not SEARCH for another one. If you insist on plastering an ugly search bar on the video, at least put it at the end...AFTER they have watched the video they wanted to watch in the first place. Good grief, you guys really blew it on that one.

Oh come on guys... This searchbar is ugly and kills my design!
Is there any possibility to get rid of this? If not, bye bye! There are enough other video service providers. I dont need this ugly stuff on my page.
cheers.

DicenQueLlueve said...

I hope you think this measure (introduce the search box) more troughly...

It's a bad idea really.

metabolictyping said...

OK guys, here is the solution:

I solved that problem by adding "&rel=0" at the end of my video-link. It looks like this now: "http://www.youtube.com/v/AtUp0qa7apg&rel=0"
You can see the result at www.metabolic-typing.de (video at top right).

The rel-parameter disables the related content and the search box. I don't like both.

More parameters at: http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/player_parameters.html

Cheers,
Dino

schokker64 said...

adding rel=0 helps indeed but you will also loose other functionality.

Here is how to remove just the search feature:

Add ";showsearch=0" to embed code to remove that frickingly ugly Search bar... That's a big FAIL for YouTube... :S

huckmagazine said...

The search box is incredibly ugly and is totally unnecessary. Adding it as an embed option might be useful for some people but to have it as a 'on by default' option is not a good idea.

All the other updates are much appreciated and are looking awesome.

Eine deutsche Anleitung zum Entfernen der Searchbox gibt es hier:

eefcee said...

What's with the "search" at the top of embedded videos? This really looks bad. The whole point of embedding a video is that it goes onto a site that is NOT a YouTube site. I want embedded videos in my blog to look good as images, not just while they are playing. YouTube used to accomplish this, it stayed mostly out of the way (big play button aside) and looked more or less like an image on the page. Now it is the most invasive and ugly embedded player I stick on my page. It feels more like an ad for YouTube than an embedded video. Further, the search is not my site search. I think this will confuse users as it is (on my site at least) more prominent than my own search. And worst: this change is retroactive and now applies to all the embedded YouTube videos on my site. In my opinion, this really sucks. My site looks littered, and it is thanks to YouTube, a service I once trusted and enjoyed. Not so much anymore. I'll be using Vimeo and other providers as much as possible. YouTube: please remove the search bar! Or at least put it on a popup menu, like that upward triangle in the lower right.

Do you want us all to run to Vimeo?!?!

This is truly the most anoying 'improvement' if seen in any extension.

So now i have to add &showsearch=0 to all my placements.

driquim said...

please remove the search box. it defeats the purpose of embedded video. It doesn't help people play the videos. Please make this optional

marinasurfclass said...

thank you html code!
back to normal now.

marinasurfclass said...

To remove the search box add this code to your embedded file.

1. In your embed code, find the url for the flash player (it is in there twice if you are using the standard YouTube embed code)
2. Add the parameter showsearch=0 (by adding “&showsearch=0″ to the url)
3. There is no step three - the video shouldn’t be showing the search box any more.

FaberOptime said...

The automatic inclusion of a search box is every embedded video is unwelcome.
Please make it the default NOT to show the search box (i.e. consistent with previous expected behaviour), but I guess make it an optional extra.
This should be trivial to do and would alleviate the primary issue now being faced by your existing user base.
For those that don't know, the search box can be supressed by adding "&showsearch=0" to the emdedded video src but it's very annoying that every existing use now requires this manual modification in order to work as expected.
Effectively this innovation "breaks" existing uses and hence should be reconsidered.
Thanks for your attention.

driquim said...

eefcee said...

Um, has anyone else noticed that the search box is now gone by default.

I'm glad about that, but continue to be puzzled by the lack of communication from YouTube. Is this a change of policy? An accident? The documentation at http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/player_parameters.html#showsearch still says the default is to show the search box. In any case, I'm glad YouTube seems to be hearing its users.

ournorthport said...

I see the the Search Bar in embeded videos seems to have become interactive today. Thank you. This is a much cleaner way to implement this feature. I still would vote for making the Bar optional, but am much happier now that the ugliness is hidden until it is summoned.

Youtube team, do you mind if uploaded a video that is completely blank for any time limit you guys choose. Why I ask this? I don't have Windows or a camcorder. Could you remove the bit where you accidently click the video once it's playing and it takes you to the YouTube video page...can't see the point in having that feature when there is that option in the right click menu.

And I like the option to copy the embed html code..very useful.
