New Viewer Discovery Metrics in Insight
When we announced our free analytics tool called YouTube Insight two weeks ago, we promised to update Insight with new features and information fairly quickly, and we weren't kidding. Today we're releasing a new feature that helps you better understand the viewing trends of your YouTube videos: a discovery tab that shows how viewers found your video, whether by searching on YouTube or Google, browsing under "related videos," receiving a link to the video from an email or website, or watching it in an embedded player off YouTube. Insight even breaks down the specific YouTube or Google search queries that led to your video, as well as the external websites driving traffic to your content. (Insight will show up to 50 inbound links.)
We think you'll find this helpful in several ways. For example, users can learn how different parts of their identity on the web (perhaps their pages on MySpace or Facebook) are effective in driving traffic to their content. Partners can reach out to form relationships with those publishers who consistently point readers to their videos on YouTube. And since advertisers can now access reports detailing the search queries that lead viewers to their videos, they can make more informed decisions about the keywords and bids they select to appear on Google.com.
You can find these new metrics under the "Discovery" tab within the Insight dashboard. Click on the "Insight" button under "Account > My Videos."

The new Discovery function is great. You might want to mention you need to put the date range in for it to work. It would be great to have a channel view for Insight where it combines all the data from all your videos.
It's a great tool... but there's a little bug.
Using it for a video for the first time, this is what happens:
1) "Views" Tab.
Everything's ok: the map has different shades of green according to the percentage of views it got from its publishing date till now.
2) "Discovery" Tab: the data range becomes 4/9/08 - today!!!
3) Switching back to the "Views" Tab, the data range reported remains... 4/9/08 - today!
The chart showing the number of views day by day is untouched (hence, it's still related to the whole timespan of the video's existence)... but the world map remains related to the 4/9/08-today timespan!
One feature, I would also like to see is if you could separate email notification for Messages and Video Received messages. Most of us want to know when some one sent us a message but not a video. Also, it would be nice to be able to say I don't want to recieve videos from this person but still want them as a friend but we can still recieve bulletins from them and all the other thing friends can do on Youtube.

DISCOVERY
1. i can scale the date range, but i can't scale the "view" range on he vertical axe.. this may occasionally help, for example: if i have got one single huge peak of views i can't understand how many views i had the others day.. the scale is too short! (It may help showing the numbers of views when i mouse-over the cursor above the day)
NATIONAL BASED RANKINGS
2. Good works, guys! I have been asking them for months! Only i was expecting them as an option, not as default, the global ranking has more quality channel....but... it's fine anyway....

Just today, you can't see comments on your channel further back than your last four. Why has this function changed? Otherwise, great new layout.
Something happened in the update. When I go to click on 'more info', the text turns to the same color grey as the box on the right so I can't ready it unless i highlight it by selecting it.

On Mozilla Firefox, most pages now look extremely ugly thanks to being white links everywhere, and... well, it's ugly.

What did you do? i didn't like the changes. First you changed the colour of the letters in our Channels, second to view the information in the videos we have to wait and finally the videos are full of unnessesary things. YouTube is a great page but don't fill it with other pages.

I do not like that you cannot anonymously rate, instead it tells you who rated your videos, and also tells you the video owner that you rated their poor video a 1, in turn they will come to your video and do the same.

The new video page is horrible. Why do I want to see a myspace or facebook sharing option? Why not have a classic view option? It looks too crowded now and the new menu just to see the statistics is terrible.

I've only gone on youtube a few weeks ago,because I thought it was bad, I am a christian,now I love it. I watch everyday on my job when my work is finish, It really has been a blessing for me, I am a sign language interpreter, so it helps me to watch other interpreters and see how they sign, but i notice the change in more info-its only gives the tags. please fix it to give the information. Great metrics, to be sure. However, it looks as though you've removed the 'medaling' system for popular sites. For instance, we're the #3 most subscribed non-profit of all time, but now our little honoraria medal has disappeared. That's not so good.

omg I LOVE the way everything looks, its more organized with all the tabs and everything is really neat and modern looking.
Somehow i can't see the comment box on videos that use the "new" video player thing and i can't watch videos that use it. What's wrong? I've already downloaded the latest flash player but it still says i need to upgrade to the latest flash player. WHAT'S WRONG?
Also, why try and make me accidentally hit the active sharing now? There's a reason why I never checked it in my settings, and I definitely do not want to see it there.

maybe its just me but in "manage video responses" the "response #" uses the videos view count variable instead of the response number (just a cosmetic glitch).

Please bring back the old one :( This is so unorganized looking, I have to click around to figure out the stats on my videos when they used to be there automatically, and the description boxes are working properly. Please, this is really terrible. Put the old one back :O

I would really appreciate if you could put back the button on "My recent comments" where you could see all your comments. I've seriosly been going nuts without it.. and I've only been online for about an hor :P

View All comments occasionally going missing is the LEAST of the problems with comments. The difference in timestamps between the bottom of page one and the top of page 2 of any heavily commented video is measured in hours or 10s of hours (try MRirian's Nothing 16, for example). 100s, maybe 1000s, of comments go "missing" (they aren't, really, view all will show them... if view all is available, of course) and they're the most current and therefore most important comments. Functionally, now, the comment system supports exactly 10 comments. As soon as you have more than that, comments are not being displayed properly. The "Newest" link when using view all also goes missing frequently. When trying to see the last page of comments on a video that has 10000+ comments, this is insane. No, I will not page through them 2 or 3 pages at a time, 8-10 times, to get to the end. Comments should be priority ONE to fix, and I mean FIX... completely. Shame on you if you release another rev of your UI without making comments work 100% correctly, 100% of the time.
This new layout is horrible. It has fucked up my channel page, my video pages and even the top of all youtube pages making it hard to read. Why did you change a good thing?
This new setup is horrible. It is obvious that you are choosing commercial interests over the viewers interests! Who cares about the Insights resources but the ad buyers? I want a website that's designed to make it easy to listen to songs and easy to watch favorite vids, not have to fight through the ads and worry about your privacy. And I want an erasable History back.

anyway, thanks for the updates to Insight, i love it! I hope to see a new layout change and a new update soon.
I like some things about the new layout like how they seperated the comments, and i am absolutely happy you brought back the "sort by video views" thing back, but some things i want changed. It was a good try, but the oldest version was good, the older version was great, this one is just slightly better than the oldest one, which i am talking about the layout in like early-mid 2007.
Hi, just noticed the new layout. The only problem is that "Favourite" looks like a TAB when it's actually a BUTTON. This leads to you pressing it, then having to go all the way to your favourites to delete it, which leads to Google's bandwidth being wasted, eventually leading to the internet collapsing on itself and us all dying.
I see the new statistics layout, yes; but I don't see anything labeled "insight" or "about this video", not even with my browser's Find button. And the View All Comments functionality should be restored immediately; it was just about my favorite function!

The Youtube website design team should be trying to achieve a single goal - simplicity. It worked for Google, it would work for Youtube. The current layout reminds me of those old HTML example pages showing every possible thing that could be done with HTML. It's far too noisy and complex.

The new Insight feature is fantastic. My only criticism is that, when it comes to the map, it is difficult to differentiate between the neutral color and the lighter shades of green. Perhaps if the map itself were white, instead of a beige tone, it would be easier to make the distinction.
I think the girls involved in that brutal attack against that should be tried as adults i think they also need their butts kicked like that it makes me sick to watch that beating but at the same time it makes me mad i just want to jump threw the screen and beat them me and my boyfriend both feel the same way thats it was wrong of them to do that to her im a 24 year old girl and if that were me i would have tried to fight back but when your scared your going to die what are you going to do i feel so sorry for her i hope she is feeling alot better i send my love to her mom and dad and family and her

Can you guys create a Suspended Account center? TakiyahJ was suspended. She is a Youtube partner. She really has no idea why she was suspended. She had over 4000 subs. She is a singer. You guys lost Perez Hilton over this exact same issue. How can you expect people to invest in a platform when you can destroy their work at any moment. You guys wouldn't have a boardband provider that kills your connection for any random reason. Phatfffat was also suspended and she had 27,000+ subs. She is a signed artist to Jermaine Dupre's So So Def label. Dupre is a major executive at Universal Records. You destroyed over 1 1/2 years of the work she had did with no explanation. This is no way to do business. If you can't at least create a center to resolve the issues for partners in a 24 to 48 hours time period then your partner program is worthless. Every content provider on Youtube lives in fear of suspension and it's an unacceptable risk for a business person.
For the Discovery Metrics: Is there an alternate to getting color gradients on a map of countries or states? I'm colorblind, and can discern only the two darkest gradients. Is there a link I can click to get a written list of countries/states? Thanks.

btw2, Youtube will always cut off the last second of every video after transfering and compression, that's why most videos have a sudden ending! (Ex. if I upload a 0:35 video, youtube will only give me 0:34 back.)

What has happened to the typical video page? Viewer comments are no longer that distinguishable from each other anymore; now they look like one giant mess. Why couldn't that aspect of YouTube remain the same? If not, here are 3 friendly suggestions:....1) put a much darker separator/line between each person's comments, or 2) insert a greater space, or 3) bring each username and their comments closer together. P.S.: these blog responses are full of spam. Where are the "reply/spam/score/thumbs-down/thumbs-up" icons that used to appear with previous blog comments?

I love the new insight feature but have a little suggestion to make nevertheless.
The "Related Videos" (Discovery Tab) list shows only the ID of the videos (this horrible mixture of letters and numbers).
Would it be possible to list the titles instead so I don't always have to click on the links first in order to see what videos did the referral?
When clicking on the list of ones video it no longer shows how many days/weeks/months it has been since they were posted. Can you bring that back please?

I love this feature and I think it's the best one you've introduced yet.
I watched a couple of videos about the beating of the young women by 8 other young women. The language was literally vulgar in their descriptio of their feelings. The use of "F..", piss, "F.. you" should not be allowed on this site. Those are signs of people uneducated and unread. They are disrepectful of other people. They are at the least discourteous. They are at the most showing the lowest common denominator in the use of the American English language by our youth. It is indeed sick to listen to. I like to keep up with what is happening, but this is not worth listening to.

what you guys have done to the new comment review from within the inbox is stupid, please bring back the view all comments for a new comment alert INSTEAD of having to open the video to find that button, it amazes me how people can try to create something better and actually destroy the best parts of what you had in the first place, it's now going to be my pet peev with youtube i guess, it makes no sense to send me a new comment alert and then make me open the video to read and review it.

And... you might want to think about a 2000 character limit on comments to your blog..that LORIZARLENGA lady takes up, like, half the page.
I don't like the new commentary vs. statistics thing - whatever you want to call it is fine, but I liked being able to see whether or not a video had honors at all without clicking on things and making the comments disappear.
Why is the Top 100 most played all over the place now? Clips with less then 2 k right next to clips with 1mio plays? How does a clip with 2 k plays get into the top 100?

Can someone please tell me how to bring back the old you tube screen to watch videos? I have dial up and it takes forever to load a video.
And with this new viewer even after the vid loads no matter whether I press play or replay the video starts loading up again. It's awful. I can't watch ANYTHING at all.

I love the capabilities of youtube. It is fabulous. You can use a video to get someone to click on your link and go to your website. People love to watch videos and so what a good way to get them to watch yours and get excited about your offer.
