YouTube Videos in High Quality
You may have noticed that we're now giving you the option of watching some YouTube videos in higher quality. We're making these streams available on certain videos, based upon the source file uploaded to us, and over time you'll find a greater percentage of the library is available to view in higher quality. This feature applies to all eligible videos uploaded from the YouTube community, and is not restricted to partner content, so everyone can enjoy this upgrade.
How do you watch higher quality videos? On your Account page you're now able to choose "always show me higher quality when available" or "never show me higher quality." We suggest you select "always show me..." only if you have a fast internet connection, otherwise you might find that videos don't play as quickly or smoothly as you're used to. Higher quality videos also have a link right below the video player which will allow you to select between the normal or higher quality settings.
We want to help everyone understand that YouTube will continue to evolve with the videos you're creating. We're especially excited about offering this upgrade in video quality to our community of filmmakers and animators, who have been requesting this feature for some time. As more of you guys produce great-looking videos, we want to make sure they can be seen in all their glory. So we'll continue to increase quality behind the scenes and make tweaks to support your uploads. (Remember, we can now support uploads up to 1GB in size.)
You may also wonder how video quality is chosen. Our general philosophy is to make sure that as many people as possible can access YouTube and that videos start quickly and play smoothly. That's one reason why you don't see us racing to call this "Super Duper YouTube HD," because most people don't want to wait a long time for videos to play.
Right now the Help Center information is pretty basic, but ongoing we'll be making more specific details available for those content creators who really want to tune their videos for YouTube.

no how to make ur own youtube account
Is it me or are your new uploaded videos jerky during playback? The file I upload to YouTube is smooth and correct, but as soon as it's uploaded and played on YouTube, it's jerky again!! I've tried uploading different formats to see if I get better results, but in the end, all my new uploads are like this. All the one's I uploaded a year ago are all fine? What gives?

There should be a rule or at least a right for family member to file a compaint against people posting videos of people who have passed, it only brings more sorrow and pain to the family.

What does it mean if the HQ or HD button doesn't appear. I'm pretty sure my graphics card is good enough. My screen is 12" IBM Lenovo X series tablet. Any ideas?
High is definitely very popular right, but with Youtube videos, are not really conducive to high def since the screens are so small, its very hard to tell the difference between a high def video and one that is standard def
i have a long standing problem with sound cut out on my video uploads.
i did 3 videos today and the sound cut out on 2 of them after a few minutes.
i have not tried the third yet but i wont be surprised if the sound cuts out on that too.
also i notice that when i am uploading, the flash plug in keeps crashing
and the video playback is out of synch.
and many of my video's have static noise on them and the original recorded sound has gone.
can anyone give me some advice?

The high quality option on YouTube is very tweeky. I did what "jdlccol" did and the button didn't appear. The HQ button didn't show on my videos until I installed some sort of "Adobe Reader". Now thats really dumb.
I have chosen "always show me higher quality.. The problem is that it ends up going back to default. Sometimes after a few days or week. I had to re-set it twice today. Yes, I save the change and get the message "Changes Saved" It ends up going back to the default. By the way, trying to find an email to let you know there is a problem is a joke. I tried searching everywhere in help or contact us. It appears you don't want us to contact you. Fine. But please, save me the time and let me know that. I wasted a lot of time fishing around for nothing.

When YouTube decides to pull their heads outta their asses (and their heads are so far up their asses that they can literally taste the back of their own tongues), then they'll follow the lead Dailymotion has set by putting a HQ button on all videos, period. DID YOU HEAR THAT YOUTUBE? ALL VIDEOS ON DAILYMOTION HAVE A HQ OPTION. READ ONCE AGAIN: ALL VIDEOS. Dailymotion converts their videos to VD6, 320*240 resolution, and encodes their audio mp3/96k stereo, and no matter what, they still kick the shit outta you, YouTube. The main problem with DM at the moment is not many people go there, but hopefully soon that will change. How many people watch in HD? An insignificant amount. How many watch in HQ (when available)? Almost everybody. But, this simple fact is beyond YouTube's comprehension, and when you try to bring their attention to it, they get pissy and defensive like a bunch of little ingrateful bitches that know they have the video hosting market cornered at the moment. Screw YouTube, really.
Also, don't be tricked into thinking that Internet Explorer 8 will make a difference. It still doesn't work, even if the video is encoded MPEG4 or H.264. As far as Firefox 3 goes, I personally was never able to upload in HQ with that browser. Like 'NorcrossMedia' said below, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So far, the only browser that's given any of my videos an HQ button was IE7 (I've taken that video down now so it's moot). Always 'beta" you say? That's crazy, absolutley CRAZY. Besides, how can YouTube evolve to nowhere? MPEG2 videos uploaded here a couple years back all had terrible quality. Now, MPEG4 has terrible quality. And, MPEG is WORSE quality than a couple years back. What the hell? You gotta see how that is infuriating to people. I really don't mean to be so harsh, but like I said, evolving and improving by standing still (or going backwards). YOUTUBE: Get a system to encode videos that works for the average user, and stop worrying about being specialized. Major failure. That's all.

Come on YouTube. Give us some answers. So many of us are asking "What's happened to the 'View in high quality' option" and no-one's coming up with an answer. I bought a better quality camera so my new clips would look better. Why did I bother?
Why is uploading videos to YouTube so frustrating? When they started the option of uploading videos in HQ, I went back and deleted most of my videos and re-uploaded them so they can be viewed using the high quality option. I learned that using the normal uploader the videos do not load with the high quality option, but with the multi-uploader, they do. WHY CAN'T YOU USE BOTH? Now, when I upload videos with the same exact settings on my camera, the videos playback on YouTube in normal quality and the "Watch in High Quality" option is gone. I even tried deleting a few of my videos that you could watch with the high quality option and re-uploaded them and now they playback in normal quality and the "Watch in High Quality" option has completley disappeared. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME???

Sometimes their system encodes high quality and sometimes it doesn't despite the fact that your video is to HQ specifications.

I have uploaded 3 videos in the last week and the playback is jurky, the settings are the same for previous uploads and they playback fine. Has youtube altered the playback framerate or is there another reason? It is very disapointing.
I find it very frustrating the uneven nature of when my videos are available in HQ versions, and when they are not. Some of my films are over 10 minutes long and thus must be split into parts, so you can understand why it isn't great when Part 1 is available in HQ but Part 2 is not.

If you know you have a very fast or very slow connection, you may want to change your "Video Playback Setting" in your account to "I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it's available." or "I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video."
To change your playback settings, follow the steps below:

Ok this is indeed weird. When i put &fmt=18 at the end of videos for which the HQ button does not show up it suddenly works... but when i remove &fmt=18 the HQ button is gone again. this must be some kind of bug.

3 days ago I could upload videos with no problem, now it "looks" like they have uploaded and the message is received that I can view now or later that they are processing, but I can't see any evidence of these videos in any stage of processing on my account. I have the same problem. A lot of my uploads are mpeg2. In the past the high quality button would always be available but nowadays it is not and appears completely random.
For mpv u;loads however i do not have problems.

I have been trying to upload my companies videos, all of the ones so far have the view in high quality option available, for the past few days, I have been trying to upload one video and it just doesn't give that option anymore.

You can also get rid of the search bar towards the top of your videos with &showsearch=0 added to the embed code of your videos.

YouTube, if you don't want this site to crash and burn, you need to STOP this algorthimic demoting nonsense. Nobody wants this, the 'all of us' you refer to is seriously put off by this. People are calling together boycotts and such, eventually they'll all leave because of this blatant unconstitutional censorship, and it'll be the end of YouTube. You NEED to STOP.
it just never works. it doesnt matter if I upload a mp4 video in 16:9 or a wmv one in TV resolution... youtube won't show the high quality button after processing! only if I paste &fmt=18 after the url it works... this is just terrible annoying cause my music sounds like crap! why can't you guys solve that problem??? :o( - one time youtube doesn't recognize the 16:9 the other time the HQ buttons are missing, the other time the stereo sound gets cut out... why why why :o(

We demand ExtantDodo's account be restored. This is not the first time creationists have used bogus copyright claims to silence their critics on youtube. You should be aware of this tactic by now, and the fact you have yet to reverse this absurd decision shows something is rotten on fair youtube.
I can't get the HQ options to work either. Same problems as most people have listed below. There's a site better than youtube that instantly works with hq videos. I can't get mine to work, though I follow all the steps and tutorials people post. That site is vimeo.

He's moking me and YouTube («go hide your head in the sand, pedroac or better yet go report me to the utube authorities»), and I need to write down a report to punish him. I bet he will do again. My older videos are high quality, and around 20-40mb in size.
My newer ones are around 75mb in size, yet the quality isn't just bad, it's terrible. What's more is that the high quality option isn't available any more!
Why is this happening? They are all produced in exactly the same way using the same settings, so why are some high quality and others not? they're just not watchable in their current state.
To get the HQ option, encode video in Xvid/Divx 480x360 or 640x480 (as recommended by youtube), and 4:3 aspect ratio. If your clip is widescreen, you must add black bars to the top and bottom of the video screen to make it 4:3. After upload, it could take up to 1-2 hours (depending on video length) for the HQ option to actually appear under the video window. I've been doing this for the last 6 months with no problem.

I think if you post either a fullscreen or widescreen clip... always convert to 640x480 (or higher) and I think you will be able to view your widescreen in HQ.
Oh I forgot.. I have Bell Book and Candle with the black bars on top and bottom in my own kidneybean666 account.

The low quality videos do not play. The rotating animation ust keeps spinning. The high quality videos do play. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the FLASH player many times.

slackinbr made some VERY GOOD points I share above. I applaud YouTube for moving towards higher quality, especially as sites like Flickr have such crisp video — but the audio is buggy and badly distorted.
So, with the video looking better but the audio clearly being worse, this should be remedied. I've sent numerous support emails and provided clear repros but haven't heard anything back. :(

I have uploaded videos in another account and my experience in getting HQ (High Quality) from your video is this: convert your video to full-screen size (640x480 or higher) AND a 850-900 kbps bitrate. My 10 min video was about 70 MB in size. When I did these TWO things, my video had that TV icon under the Player and I could view it in HQ.
Now, the video I uploaded was 70MB at 720x480 pix and 900 kbps video and stereo audio. When I examined the corresponding HQ video from youtube , it became: 50 MB file at 480x320 pix and 500 kbps and stero audio. The SQ (standard quality) low resolution youtube file was: 25MB at 320x240 pix and around 300kbps.

I have been trying for weeks to figure out what the magic formula is for making and uploading my videos in high quality. I have read everything I can find, and used dozens of combinations of codecs, formats, etc.. Actually, all I want is good stereo sound, which does not require much bandwidth.

Oh, I made a mistake in one of my previous comments. When I examined the youtube HQ (high quality) video, the format was 480x360 pixels .... not the 480x320 pix I stated below.
That's a crock.....some of my videos have the high quality option, others recorded "exactly" the same way and within minutes of each other do not.

If youtube has designated your videos HQ (the little TV icon appears under the player), then go to your account and click on the Playback Video Quality link, and select the "Always play back higher quality videos when available".

dwtsfan2007, I am converting all my vids to 640x480 now. In my other account, I converted the widescreen Bell Book and Candle to 640x480, and the black bars appeared automatically.
I do not even know how to add the black bars in.
I would give it a try ... maybe just convert at 640x480 and upload a small 2 min video to test it out. Convert at a high enough video bit rate too... I use 900kbps but it could be lower if you experiment on the bit rate settings.

Why can't you just play the videos we have submitted as they are sent to you ? Ok. Enoughs about hi-quality. How about telling users the requirement. I am just speculating, 640x360 for 16:9 and 640x480 for 4:3, is that now the standard. Wouldn't it be awesome if you guys could just play our video without encoding it to flash and crap. I think youtube is fast, that's good, but videos that are HD provider much better viewing experience. Its a great idea, Utube, to allow for bigger file sizes and better quality playback for those with fast connections. I too would like to see longer play times too--especially in the News and Politics section. I listened to the whole of Obama's speech on racism which lasted for far more than 10 mins. Why can't others do this? 10 min is too restrictive. And it is time consuming to split up speeches into multiple clips. 20 min for News and Politics would be a big help.
