YouTube Elevates Most Popular Users to Partners

**Updated to include link to partnership form.**

Over the past year and a half we've been excited and amazed by all of the original content that’s been created by members of the YouTube community. We've seen the content many of you create evolve to become elaborately developed series, concept videos, and sitcoms with tens of thousands of subscribers. Many of you have gone from creating videos in bedrooms and living rooms on webcams to becoming YouTube celebrities with fans and audiences all over the world.

Up until now there’s been a distinction between the content you create and the content created by YouTube's professional content partners. We want to start changing some of the perception here. Which is why we’re adding several of the most popular and prolific original content creators from the YouTube community to our partnership program. Now some of your favorite YouTube members, including Lonelygirl15, LisaNova, renetto, HappySlip, smosh, and valsartdiary, will begin to participate in the same revenue sharing and promotional opportunities that are available to YouTube's other partners. These include thousands of mid-sized to large content creators who range from video game companies to universities to production houses.

Initial user participants have been selected from the content creators that you have helped popularize by watching their videos and subscribing to their channels. Because they have built and sustained large, persistent audiences through the creation of engaging videos, their content has become attractive for advertisers, which has helped them earn the opportunity to participate on YouTube as a partner.

Participating user-partners will be treated as other content partners and will have the ability to control the monetization of the videos they create. Once they’ve selected a video to be monetized, we’ll place advertising adjacent to their content so participating user-partners can reap the rewards from their work.

So now that you’ve read this, you’re probably wondering, “How can I get in on the action?” This is only available to the initial participants. But if you create original content, have built and maintained an audience on YouTube, and think you might qualify for this program based on what’s above, you can express interest on our partnership lead form.

We hope that this program inspires people to keep creating original videos, building audiences and engaging with the YouTube community. What we’re really excited about, beyond our new partners, is that literally, at any given moment, thousands of creative people from throughout the world are posting new, original content to YouTube. It’s this community that’s shaping what the YouTube experience is now and will be in the future, and we’re incredibly excited for the prospect that holds.

Best,

The YouTube Team

Awesome news! I keep telling my friends that what is happening with YouTube is akin to what happened in the early days of Radio and Television (and the internet.) We're all still winging it, taking it one day at a time, and yet building something which will endure for a long, long time to come. I have seen the Future, and it is YouTube. Thanks!!
(And Subscribe to Britethorn -- we'd love to make it into the Partner Echelon!)

This cash cow will only bring sour milk in the end. Bring in automatic participation for all because it is the whole which makes up YouTube. Oh yes you can fill in a partnership lead form and bring along your tin can in hopes that you will be accepted. But don't go buying a large piggy bank any day now because it is sure to never get filled.

LiberalViewer said...

Interesting pilot program! The blog entry leaves me with a couple questions, though:

1) The program is only open to those who "create orginal content," but I have seen videos from these initial selectees that fairly use material created by others, so how much fair use disqualifies someone from being a creator of "original content?" and

2) What is a "partnership lead form?"

Thanks for the update :-)

Well done to the likes of renetto and LisaNova, whose videos I've really enjoyed. But's the deal with loneygirl15? She's not a girl who's a member of YouTube. 'She' is merely part of a marketing machine that has a life outside of YouTube. I unsubscribed but I'm told 'her' videos on YouTube are now significantly behind the videos released on the lg15 site.

Still, rant aside, I'm pleased that there are some cool original content producers who've have been recognised by YouTube.

ilbiscom said...

Well, this is right, but just first step. Video revenue sharing and AdSense variations are already known. Hope that there will be a place for niche content also.

My hope is that at least some of the money they receive will go back into the videos they produce to continually improve their content. I do think it'll be more challenging to compete against the partners though because undoubtedly YT will give them additional help in an attempt to bring more people to their channels since they'll be making money off their continued success. All in all, a sincere congrats to those chosen! =)

Can it be more like Revver? That site claims to PAY THE DISTRIBUTORS OF THE CONTENT.
That means,if you just post a video on your free site, you get a cut of the ad action (much smaller than the owner, but your "fee" is off the top.")

If anything they have and continue to hinder creativity, rather than promote it. Sadly they have taken something special and are turning into a marketing ploy.

three furhter (amazing) ideas for You[Tube]

1. add a video's screenplay (and writer) section

Most democratic it would be than YouTube.com paid 1 dollar by each 100 unloadings. So that? Because Google always has been characterized to give more than the others. Remember, when Hotmail offered 2MB and Yahoo 6MB, Gmail offered 2.7GB. Then, YouTube.com must be the one who pays more than other sites thus to attract more public and thus people are happier.

Ok so ur popular... so u get paid for it..sounds good. But advertisers can approach u directly, u can include them in ur videos.. why does utube have to get involved?

Does this mean that the partner producers utube elects will eventually want subscribers to pay too? And those people that use non-original content will have to pay royalties? Guess so- why shouldnt they?

Sweet idea, some of the people on YouTube are a talented bunch, TheWineKone and LittleLoca are two that spring to mind and should go far. I hope this brings other talent forward though and more noticed over time because there are some cool people out there that need to be at the top, and no names mentioned, but there's one or two up there which have basically bottom licked (that's the polite version of what I mean) to get where they are and don't deserve it. Good idea this though, just another step to improve a fine website.

Agreed, and I have zero affiliation with Nalts, I'm just a fan.
Also, I think it's wrong you have corporate companies in the list, i.e., NBC, CBS, G4, and others. They already have their own networks & sponsors, and I don't feel it's fair that they've taken spots (money) from regular people who use YouTube for their creativity, and deserve to be recognized for thier work, and more important, thier loyalty.
I thought the first rule of Google was, Don't be Evil?

If the editors at YouTube really wanted to make a go of this they would just place a button beside all of your videos so that you could automatically ad it to this partnership. Then they could have a request for your PayPal account so that they could wire it to you. It is just like how they had told us all that they were bringing back the 10+ minute director accounts and never did after they had disabled that feature.

DandCVideos said...

Next thing you know the only people eligible to take part in this Partnership will be those from the United States ok we already know this don't we YouTube??? As you left out Tony Huynh thewinekone from Toronto Canada who won the YT Awards and replaced him with renetto Paul Robinett from Ohio lol!!!

DandCVideos said...

Oh and how many partners does it take to get a video featured? $20 USD to editor@youtube.com :) Take care all we had our fun!!!

DandCVideos said...

Featured!!!

welcomestranger said...

I must agree with others... no Nalts on the initial role out? Featured twice in the last 2 months... shame YT, shame...

riverbasil said...

In all honestly, I believe that Nalts is one of the only YouTuber's who deserves any money - he pumps out videos like there's no tomorrow, and every single one is quality entertainment... I agree with Sharpy(welcomestranger)...shame YT, shame...

Well YT. Like riverbasil already said, this is going to enlarge the gap between the chosen and the real "underground" talents even more! Be careful & think about everything that you´re planning to do! The community is not that bound to you. Everybody´s free to change the site any time! And the offer of other video-platforms is tremendous! You shouldn´t privilege those who are already on top...

riverbasil said...

I find it really ironic that as soon as I posted my previous comment, a spammer came along and left his crap here. Ironic because YT is trying to make this giant leap forward when it still has problems to fix... (not complaining, just noting irony, how I love it so)

Socksee said...

No nalts? Wow that is just so wrong. :(

MeghanStar said...

what about derekcomedy???

Schroeder182 said...

yay for valsartdiary! And old renetto!

And to those complaining about participants not there...this is just their initial launch. The others you mentioned will most likely get in the money...I mean, partnership action, too.

Dutchmachiavelli said...

Stop commercializing the internet plz! This is just a sleezy act to get more ads in youtube.

BlameBoredom said...

Lonelygirl15? Nice. So, basically, what YouTube is doing is segregating the most subscribed attention whores to the "mom and pop" YouTubers, and telling the ones who aren't the most subscribed that they aren't good enough to be around here.

Cheers to you, YouTube.

psyops1618 said...

you guys should have a solid Public Known system for your featured videos, and dont pay people, if there good enough youtube should lead to jobs.

ps. subscribe to my channel!

brianstreehouse said...

Brianstreehouse 3.5 million views! Don't forget about us!!!!

brianstreehouse said...

Can't help but wonder about the question on the form, Have you ever recieved a notice from youtube stating that one of your videos has been removed? If you answer yes, are you immediately disqualified? I had a video removed of me singing "purple rain" at a karaoke bar, It was removed due to copyright infringement. I had no clue karaoke was copyrighted, oh well. Damn, I even paid 25 bucks for the karaoke disc!

airmanjayl said...

Is this a YouTube decision or did Google just screw up big time here (which would be unusual for Google)? You're turning YouTube into a dumb arse MTV knock off.

I just posted this idea to the 'Halfbakery.com' website (a site for inventions).

1 cent rating per viewer

rate a YouTube video and transfer a little cash

Sometimes I see good work on YouTube and would like to pay a little to the author, like I would do to good street artists. Just a tiny bit, as a token of my appreciation, in the hope that if many do the same it will generate some compensation for the time and love put into the work I get for free.

When I now show my appreciation by watching it and rating it, the work will get advertising around it (part of their business model, see "YouTube Elevates Most Popular Users to Partners"). I hate advertising. Advertising benefits third parties completely unrelated to the work I see, not my choice.

As I am already registered as a user on this website I could periodically buy a credit of 5€ or something. Each time I rate a video, a self set amount of cents go to the author of the work I just watched.

Currently I am hardly motivated to rate a video which already has a rating I agree with.

Fraud is not worthwhile, as you pay only by rating videos. If this exceeds your (tiny) credit or some set maximum (like what you can physically see) the site will ask you to come back tomorrow as there is apparently some robot taking over with your credit.

Extra privacy features make this interesting: you can give anonymously (similar to giving to a street artist), but you can also make it possible to share information about you to the receiver. Perhaps you only want to show only some demographical data, perhaps you are also open to communication, perhaps you show even your identity completely. If you are the person to set your ratings worth on several dollars you might get a thank you note...

Nietzsche said: Out of chaos comes order. That's Mel Brooks's interpretation, anyway. Out of YouTube chaos comes payment. For some. And why not? It's not about views, legitimate or otherwise. It is (or should be) about quality, and reciprocation, and hardcore capitalism. The Marxists amongst us will quibble. Discuss.

Mark my words. This shall be the beginning of the end of a site that once was great but now seems to be self destructing. You should have made this site a nonstop 24/7 commercial from the get go instead of morphing into a persistant advertising machine. Thanks Google.

BiasNewsCorp said...

It's official. YouTube is now in 100% commercial interest. I'll be heading over to LiveVideo. Thanks to the previous leadership behind youtube, but please Google, leave. Thanks!

ReliableInsider said...

The problem is that youtubers respect people who put up good videos just for the fun of it and look down upon people who are doing it for money.

The cost (the loss of credibility that comes from accepting money) may seriously outweigh the benefit (a few dollars).

People doing it for money have mixed motives and the quality will suffer (see television, hate radio). Youtubers want to subscribe to human beings--not trained seals.

Think of weblogs. What exactly is a paid blogger? Either a journalist, a political hack, or a sham. Great journalists are great not because of how much their paid, but because they're so driven and so savvy that they could be making a heck of a lot more money in another profession.

BiasNewsCorp said...

Oh, and by the way. This reminds me of segregation pre-civil-war. Thanks youtube, for being discriminative.

After having already seen so many of the video responses created in reaction to this blog, hopefully YT will realize that within the core community that there is a general amazement of Nalts being left out and bewilderment that sxephil (wtf, indeed) and smpfilms are even on there (granted, we know that cori organized the As One stuff but he’s beginning to look more desperately self-serving). The vlogging community has already discovered LV (even valsartdiary is on there?) in hopes of finding the original heart of YT. Haters are bad enough, now we have to deal with greed?

YouTube,
Please put a PARTNER flag or extra description in the member's profile.
I want to know if a member is a PARTNER or not, by looking at their profile,
so I can UNSUBSCRIBE from them.
I don't want these people getting paid from my clicks.
Thanks.

This is fine for the lonelygirl15s of youtube, but it does nothing for the rest of us. We were developing some kick ass content for the youtube system, but since payment cannnot be guaranteed, we at have decided to abandon the youtube system and self-publish. I imagine we won't be the only ones. Good luck to everyone who's staying and rolling the dice on whether or not you'll ever see a penny.

I agree we should put a partner flag so we can choose not to support this B.S.
I have already un-subscribed to any "partners" I used to frequent. This is huge mistake and sets a poor example for today's kids who think playing on the computer is like a real job.
